A nice update on a classic game. FF5 has been long overdue a full soundtrack remake, and this attempt is no slouch, with bombastic arranges of similar calibre of the other Pixel Remasters. The various QoL features (minimap, full hidden route display when in one, 8 way movement, quicksave, autobattle, chest/item count) are welcome additions, and the new sprites are nice to look at. For port features, it is rather bare bones (Borderless FS, a single CRT-esque filter). While it has similar font issues as the rest of the FF Pixel Remasters, there are various mods that are easy enough to install that work for FF5PR with seemingly no issues (I recommend Patera Quetzal's FFSilver). The new art style may be hit or miss for some people, and the CRT filter included probably won't change any minds. However, this release seems to only be content scaled to the original Super Famicom release, not including any of the classes and features added with other releases, including the 2015 port. With the delisting of the 2015 port on Steam, this leaves PC players no legal avenue to play a version with these features, unlike FF3 and 4's 3D Remakes still being available for purchase. If you're looking for those features, your only options to buy it is via Mobile, GBA rereleases, or old 2015 Steam keys on other sites.

Running a comparison today between this new Pixel Remaster, the old Steam version, and the original Super Famicom version, the clear winner in both video and audio was the new Pixel Remaster. I won't dive into gameplay, since this is just an early impression, and I will be playing this later. But things I noticed: 1.) Characters are smaller now, to fall more in line with the original SF version. The old steam version the characters appear to be almost twice as tall, and this actually obscures some things, such as I noticed with the campfire in the beginning. 2.) Gone are the character portraits seen in the old steam version when there is text conversations happening. This was not in the original, and since the PR is based on the original SF version, it makes sense. Still, this is one thing I would have liked brought back from the newer versions. Not a big loss though. 3.) Animations are clearly better in the PR for environmental effects. Character animations seem to be the same between SF and PR, but the world effects just have a much cleaner QOL look. Not sacrificing the old school pixel look, but just making it look better. This is one of the ways the old steam version kind of falls flat, as it seems mismatched in some areas. Things for example like the way the crystal explodes, or the meteor comes toward you, or the water effects and campfire, and other cool little things just look clearly better in the PR version overall. 4.) One thing I noticed, and hopefully this is not isolated, is that when you are in the forest at the beginning, the trees appear to have more depth in the PR. this is thanks to the better coloring and better use of shadows. It does not seem out of place, and matches perfectly. And as for the audio, while some may prefer the chiptune of the original SF version, I find the new arrangements to be really pleasant sounding and having more emotion. I'll finish up with an actual review later when I play this some more, to touch on things such as gameplay.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are absolutely wonderful re-releases of the original final fantasy games, and 5 is no exception. If you are a true fan of the franchise, you will love this recolor/remaster of the game. This is by far, one of the best Final Fantasy titles, and one of my personal favorites! It has a Diverse class system with a lot of ways to play, an amazing score like always, Beautiful recoloring to make the game far more vibrant than ever before, more unique ways to play than usual, and is all around, one of the best in the franchise in many ways. Honestly, this is an amazing title for any fan of the Final Fantasy franchise. I Highly Recommend it.

Comparing this version of FF5 to other versions; PROS - Best music quality compared to every version of FF5 - Best pixel art graphics compared to every version of FF5. The improved water, spell effects, character sprites, and background tiles really go a long way to improve the feel of the game. - The improved auto battle feature makes grinding and repeating specific tactics much easier - The difficulty/balance seems to be mostly on par with the original, unlike the other pixel remasters that were made easier. The game is still just as challenging. CONS - The GBA content was good, but sadly not present here. The extra jobs, weapons, dungeon, and bosses will be missed. - Some day one bugs. Nothing too terrible, but I did run into a few noticeable ones. - The blue mage spell Vampire is half as effective as the GBA version. Its a shame, I used to rely a lot on this OP spell for solo Butz runs. - The world map graphics are unaltered from the GBA version of the game, including the brighter colors which look a bit out of place compared to the quality of everything else. All in all, I really liked this version of FF5. It will definitely be my go to version to play from now on.

I love FFV, so much that I speedrun the GBA version, participate yearly in the FFV Four Job Fiesta, and play romhacks of it. This remaster does a lot of things well. The soundtrack is great, and many things are faithful to the original. Visuals are great, translation is great. Some design decisions that are questionable were made, like the starting ATB not being predictable, and not pausing when your turn comes up (unless you go into a menu). The unpredictable ATB means many tactics no longer work in this version. Checkpoints have been added for game-overs which is a nice addition. The reason this gets a thumbs down is the massive amount of bugs, some game breaking. The most major is in the Ramuh forest near Istory, the game will sometimes stop reading inputs in battle unless it's an enemy's turn. This means that if you're in Wait mode and go into a menu, you softlock. Additionally there are some random crashes. Everything else points to an untested game released early. When equipping abilities that give Magic stats (like putting !Black on a different class), your Magic stat goes up, but your max MP does not, until you level up. In W2, Fork Tower isn't on the map, but is on the Bestiary map. Ghido's island is hidden in the minimap, until it is removed, then appears on the minimap. In W3 they added a custom tile for the Antlion valley, which shows as an error tile in the Bestiary map. Almagest isn't reduced by shell. Gold Hairpin sometimes doesn't work (but they're patching this soon?). If you !catch and then !control your caught enemy is glitched out. You also can't see the caught enemy in the menu. Chemist mixes sometimes don't stay on death - like Goliath Tonic sometimes stays, sometimes doesn't. Dragon Kiss, Lifeshield, etc don't stay on death, and don't protect you from White Hole. Bone Mail doesn't prevent Berserk with Blessed Kiss. The Reset spell doesn't reset the Wonder Rod. The Reset spell on Neo Exdeath causes the background to go to the Exdeath fight background, and causes you not to get the Exdeath Bestiary entry. Edit: the next is NOT a bug, recently played the SNES version and confirmed this is faithful to the original - Mastered Knight's Two-Handed doesn't work on a Freelancer These are all bugs that I've personally encountered. There's sure to be many more. Edit: I have seen many more online, with all sorts of bizarre behavior.

Final Fantasy V is my favourite in the series. This port is a buggy mess. Softlocking in combat has happened more then I can count, with the latest being the fight before getting the savepoint in the final dungeon, meaning a half hour progress and some rare steals just gone. It has an autosave feature, unless you have to close the game due to a softlock. I even had one during a climatic story moment in the second act that, if you know the game, you know which I mean. FF5 is fun. I really enjoy it. But freezing up in combat and in dungeons just sucks.

Alright, alright, alright, sit tight everyone. I never write reviews, but I had to write this one. Where do I start man? My love for the Final Fantasy franchise is a bottomless pit. With the introduction of the pixel remastered series, I've thoroughly enjoyed the releases. Albeit, I've only beaten 3 and 4 as I wasn't interested enough to the play the first two. Those two remasters were phenomenal, and I enjoyed my playthroughs. That being said, I was doing extremely well in FF5, and progress was great! I've gotten to the point where both worlds merge and I decided to pick a fight with Bahamut. Well, somewhere in this fight it generated a bug and it perma-confused my Lenna (No status indicated in battle that she is), and keeps her health at 0, but still active in battle. She's also in a perma-berserk status, so I can not choose commands upon my will. I've tried sleeping in the inns and restarting the game, but it does not resolve the issue. If I had a prior save point I would load it all up there, but I do not. I typically save 4 different slots and over them, but would not have expected a bug such as this. It has made the game virtually unplayable at this point, so I have decided not to continue. After putting 22 hours into the game and have this come up, it's nothing short of disappointing to see happen. I just don't want to invest the time to start all over again as I don't have a lot of it. I have to ask if anyone else has had this issue, and I hope no one else is going through it. Overall, my love for the game is there. It plays as your standard turned-base FF with all the nostalgic characters and lore. Had it not been for this one bug, I would've had a great time. I'm so sad.
