  Owlboy is a story-driven metroidvania title and it executes its purpose very well. It has a beautiful story, beautiful soundtracks, and a pixel art style that looks wonderful. I believe it's safe to assume that Owlboy is not for everyone due to the fact that there are so many dialogue in it. If you're thinking of buying this game for its gameplay alone, you may not get what you expect for the gameplay it offers is mediocre at best. You can fly, pick up your buddies to use them as weapons, pick up some objects to use them to your advantage and that's it. However, they managed to keep it interesting with various boss battles in my opinion. Puzzles are quite interesting, too. Story is where this game shines best. It has its own unique universe where owls used to be the most sophisticated species of the earth, but their arrogance caused the continents to get separated and float into the sky thus carried civilization with them. What if you're from a species that cannot fly? Well, good luck then. There are also hostile robots that call themselves "Pirates" and they cause trouble for the other people. I won't spoil anything but they have a motive behind their actions. The protagonist, Otus, is the most interesting thing about the story. He was born mute and although he's trying his best, he is constantly getting blamed by his teacher Asio for ruining things, which leads him to have self-esteem issues. Now isn't that perfectly relatable for the most of us? The whole story revolves around Otus' struggle within and he wants to prove himself to the people and most importantly, his teacher Asio. Does he succeed? Well, that's left to player's interpretation, I guess. In short, Owlboy is both heartwarming and a heartbroken experience that should be experienced by anyone who is having trouble about making inner peace with themselves.

  Short, and Sweet adventure game. The characters have a lot of charm, the art is amazing, the music is phenomenal one of the bests parts of the game imo. Some of the levels are a little bland and feel like a Mario Maker level, while others are pretty fun. Bosses in particular are either really fun, or leave a lot to be desired. The story is definitely the main focus, and it did a good job keeping me engaged throughout the whole experience. Over all I'd give the game a 8/10.

  Fantastic platformer. I'm a few hours in and am having a blast with it. The controls are easy enough to figure out, and the game caters to right and left handed players.

  Pretty visuals and great music combined with bad design and poor gameplay. Game can be frustrating and at some point it becomes boring with its story, not to mention clunky controls. How did this game even take 10 years of production? You have repeatable mechanics all time long, simple puzzles and zero QoL stuff like minimap or fast travel. I'm so annoyed with this game. It started very good but ended like a trash which I regret buying. Don't buy it, pick up something else, there are many better games in this genre.

  Beautiful but boring. It plays like a top-down shooter almost, with the flying and shooting in all directions. In this sense, there is no real differences between the walls, floor or ceiling like most side-scrolling games. You will not have to master momentum, jumping or a kit of moves that change the way you traverse the space. In it's structure It's more like a classic Zelda game than a Metroid, but it lacks the progress of acquiring new powers that both those franchises have. It has a hub world that connects various dungeons. The dungeons are puzzle-like in nature. The narrative feels like the writer really resents some father-figure he has had in his life. It feels like "poor-little-old-me" whimpy self-insert writing. It's boring and long-winded and feels irrelevant to the greater conflict. The world is under attack but the only emotional story thread is how mean the patriarch is to Otis. You just know the writer prescribes to that extremely common self-destructive, corporate sponsored, BlackRock social engineering line of politics. I doubt he'd even fight for his homeland as much as Otis does in this game.

  this game has been on my radar for over a decade, and sitting in my library untouched for years. i think i was demotivated to play it because of all the hype, and some people saying it wasn't as good as they were expecting. i'm glad i finally got the time to sit down and play it for myself though, because it was a very fun and pleasant experience. i haven't beat it yet, but i'm confident that i enjoy this game from what i've experienced so far. the characters are really cute and the pixel art and environments are amazing. i heard some people complain about the gameplay or mechanics but i thought they were fine, and i'm not even that good of a gamer LOL. satisfying, fun, and i've really been enjoying the story so far too. i absolutely love Solus and Twig.

  I come to you from the space year 2023. If you, like me, wanted to check this out after having missed the hype train from 7 years ago, note that it was a simpler time for indie games when Owlboy released. If a game seemed to be generally polished, it was a HUGE success. Now that polished indies are the norm, we can be critical and truthful: The Bad: - Story is awful. It feels like it was written by someone who saw Yorgos Lanthimos movies like the Lobster and the Favourite, but didn't understand what made those good. This is all to say that the story is full of cruelty but doesn't make a good point of it and doesn't even seem to be aware of how cruel everyone is. This is the clearest when seeing that the jokes are also cruel. - Gameplay is miserable. Seems to want to be a flying version of Metal Slug, but the controls are contradictory, there's no onboarding, and mechanics don't build on each other. There's no dodge with i-frames despite your character taking up a huge amount of the screen, and being around one of the many walls will punish you severely. The Good: - Animation is beautiful - Music is multi-layered and cinematic This would have been good if it were a screensaver instead of a game.

  Pros +Best pixel art I have ever seen in a indie game. (yes i'am aware guilty gear has amazing art) +Interesting Protagonist +Amazing Ost +Tight Responsive controls +Did I mention the art? +Meet a diverse and funny cast of characters +6-8 hours on first playthru w/o doing side things Cons -Nothing really it's a masterpiece. The only thing that gave me some pause is that the pricepoint is kind of high. My fears were erased withing 10 minutes of playing the game.

  I don't normally write reviews. For any game pretty much. But this ones an exception. I've lost a lot of passion for video games these days. It feels like everythings so 'safe'. No one takes any risks or puts any passion into their work. Owlboy I've had a giant grin while playing. It's almost nostalgic and I've never even played it before. Solid controls. The sprite work in some scenes has just made me sit there and think to myself ".... god..... damn....." 10/10. Go buy it. These dudes put a lot of years into it, and it shows.

  Definitely one of my top gaming experiences and for sure the best game I've played since "Ori and the Blind Forest". Owlboy actually exceed the top level of 16-bit platformers and hopefully will be an inspiration for more great platformers in the future. Ah, and I have no doubts that this is the best platformer of 2016.
