mementoes is a prequel and can be played at any time, but ideally after the trilogy, and since each takes about an hour, plus mementoes about 3 more hours, catching up shouldn't be a problem. the over-arching story starts with the usual 'your car breaks down in the middle of the night and there's a spooky house nearby' setup, then things go from bad to worse and even worse, with each new game and location getting more and more disturbing and creepy. puzzles in these games range from trivial to relatively tricky, there are items to find and use, symbols to write down, questionable characters to talk to, and so on. and while dying is a possibility, progress loss is not, it gets saved constantly and you get to continue from the same spot every time. jumpscares aren't that bad either, and there's a handy hint system in case you get stuck, and it works well, even lets you skip puzzles, which is not the best thing to do in a puzzle game, but some are just really frustrating, so I didn't mind not wasting more time on them. the story's nothing to write home about, it's more about the atmosphere, and while graphics are okay, I found both the music and especially the sound effects more annoying than not in the original trilogy, but it gets better in later entries, and disillusion is the first in the series with separate toggles for sound and music, but gibberish noises during dialog are back. why?! and still no volume sliders or brightness settings. disillusion picks up a year after surgery, as the protagonist decides it's time to learn more about these strange goings-on, so he heads to forgotten hill museum. I have to say, the series has come a long way since its first entry (which I played the day before this). gameplay is still the same, there are still glitches here and there, but the presentation is getting better and better. new features include journal entries for important stuff, always enjoy and appreciate them, and this one has info learned from previous games and a ton of new reading material. then there's a watch and a camera, won't spoil what they're used for, besides the obvious, but it's really cool. the game is even bigger and longer than mementoes, when I thought it'd be over soon, there was plenty left, so the higher price is justified. it took me about 8 hours to complete, more than the four previous games put together, but of course it depends on how good you are at the puzzles, how quick you're on the hint button (I used it quite liberally sometimes), and if you read all the documents and such. definitely recommended for fans of horror puzzle/adventures and escape room enthusiasts, along with earlier entries in the series, and I hope we will get more soon.

I would reconsider buying this game, since refund is not a choice. The game is repetitive and has an unnecessary and sometimes boring difficulty while handling puzzles. Story lacks many items from the previous games. I am disappointed of the game, but will keep playing and buying a possible sequel.

I have played thousands of point-and-click adventures on jayisgames and other sites since more than a decade ago. I have spun more than a hundred things clockwise and counterclockwise, including water taps, water valves, dials on a safe, lazy susans, and even statues on a rotatable pedestal. And I dare say, none of these experiences (some programmed in 2005 or something) are more disastrous than your crank of the worm-mincing machine. I knew the solution to the puzzle, but I couldn't solve it. After ten attempts or so, I turned on the sound to see if there are some helpful audible cues. There were audible cues, but it didn't help me much. Then, I read the hint, and found I that I can't
release the handle at any time
, but I still couldn't solve it. Finally I turned to a video walkthrough, and the gist was that you have to
stop dead at the notch after each revolution
. This isn't ridiculous per se, but becomes quite ridiculous once you combine it with the previous
no-release
rule. By the way, in that unofficial video walkthrough, the player got it right in the third attempt. It takes a walkthrough maker three attempts! Given the price tag, I would much prefer Rusty Lake or Submachine HD. Or even "Elements" by Neutral if you don't mind installing a Flash player.

I loved this game...very similar to Rusty Lake but i actually liked this game better...the puzzles were challenging but not impossible and the artwork is great....totally got lost in the game i forgot to feed the cat and dog and it was only a couple of quid..so if you have some time to kill do yourself a favour and get this game ..grab a coffee some munchies and enjoy

While I give the game makers a ton of credit for a game with lots of content, more than a few puzzles are fairly ridiculous. Additionally, the camera concept was worn out before the first third was over (many of the things you needed to take pictures of were far wider than the camera screen). Including a concept in the sea area that was click-speed based (and not at all intuitive that anything was happening) was a huge miss and by itself made me not recommend the game. Several puzzles are arbitrary and could be interpreted in multiple ways - top-bottom does not naturally translate perfectly to left-right, especially given that some cultures read right-to-left. The developers overused the puzzle concept where you click one of multiple elements and only some move, while if you click a different one of the elements, a different grouping move. It wasn't creative that I had to continue to go back and forth and back and forth to switch things on and off - that's not creative, that's a chintzy way of trying to add game length. And, finally, while some puzzles were clever, too many puzzles just didn't make sense. Overall, on one hand, for $5 it's worth it based on the length of the game. But on the other hand, for $5, I expected a better puzzling experience and not to be forced to be quick-fingers. Update: As we progress in the game, it only gets worse - much, much worse. Even watching walkthroughs the puzzles are a stretch. Truly, one of the worst puzzle games I've ever played given the amount of effort (content) they put into it. Update Again: Beyond Sea has made me quit playing. There is a puzzle with a shell (no spoilers) that makes absolutely no sense. There's a duplicate puzzle - how do you know which arrow to manipulate first? How do you know which direction? The manipulatable pieces go in more directions than the clue. There's a whole 'nother set, how do you know that doesn't have anything to do with it? Absolutely horrendous. 1% fun, 99% frustration.

It's a great game. Makes you think, I have a notebook to help keep track of clues while I'm playing.

A fantasticly creepy, and grotesque puzzle game. We explore a museum... of sorts... and try to figure out what's happened in the town of Forgotten Hill, where children have been gotten lost for a few years. The game has an insanely forgiving hint system, where if you're missing items the game will simply tell you that something is missing, or if you do have all the items, it'll tell you where to find the clues needed to solve the puzzle. If you still don't manage to solve a puzzle, the game can do that for you, so you'll always have a chance to experience the full... well, experience. I thought this would be about as long as the first installment in the series, which took 2-ish hours to complete. This one took 9.5 hours and it was definitely worth it. You need to ask yourself three questions if you're considering this game: - Do you enjoy puzzle games? - Do you enjoy exploration? - Do you have a stomach for some quite grotesque experiences? Then this is a must play, for sure!
