When this generation of Golf was introduced in 2015, it won the MotorTrends Car of the Year award. Volkswagen sold nearly 69,000 Golfs in 2017, its highest since 1986. In 2020, Volkswagen sold around 82,660 Jettas for just 25,860 Golfs, according to MotorIntelligence. A total of 925 Volkswagen e-Golfs were sold in Norway in two and a half months, exceeding the initial sales of the Tesla Model S, which delivered 805 units to the Norwegian market in the first two months.

This approach to electrification also means that now that the eighth-generation model is on sale, there won't be another all-electric Golf. Customers will then need to purchase either the GTI or the Golf R. These models will be redesigned by 2022.

The Golf's steering is unmistakable and unusually quick for the class. The Golf's turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine delivers just the right amount of power to run this little hatchback right; it's perfect and reliable. The driver notices that the machine is choking only during high-speed overtaking on the highway.
