How does the resistor color code work?

Resistor values ​​are often indicated by color codes. Nearly all lead resistors with power ratings of up to one watt are marked with a color band. Coding is defined in the international standard IEC 60062. This standard describes the marking code for resistors and capacitors. It also includes numeric codes, such as often used for SMD resistors.
