The game play is really amazing and cheesy narrative dialogues are there. The soldiers are dressed terrific, more like power rangers but there are lot of clothes to choose depending upon your preference. This game features a 4 player online cooperative game mode and a 2 player offline split screen game mode and sports a new character class and level-up system. For those who've never played Earth Defense Force, the best way to describe this game would be to say that it is a third person, 100% arcade style shooter game where you run through stages filled to the brim with giant bugs and alien robots that will swarm like crazy and you're tasked with the job of blowing them up with any weapons you have. It's an intense, chaotic, flashy, loud and semi-violent game that's more fun when playing with friends who just want to blow up bad guys and have fun fighting aliens that look like they came from a 1960's-1970's black and white horror movie titled "They came from planet Z!" Character classes each have their own special abilities and range from the traditional soldier who specializes in all weapon types but has no special abilities, An engineer class who has the ability to drop sentry turrets, mines and health stations at the cost of using rocket launchers, sniper rifles and assault rifles, a "Jet" class that uses a jet pack for quick maneuvering and energy weapons that are effective against mechanical enemies like "Hectors", and the heavy class which is the tank of the 4 classes, brandishing heavy weapons and having the ability to use a shield that can block incoming attacks. Each character class can level up through use, unlocking new weapons and abilities, except for the soldier who doesn't have any abilities and instead increases his health and armor endurance with each level. Be warned though, this game suffers from "MMORPG" Styles of grinding when you get to higher levels. The game is sadly short with only 3 acts or chapters, having up to 5 levels each act, and features 3 difficulty settings and an extra game mode that changes up the standard enemies in each stage to make the game more challenging. I definitely recommend playing this game if you're the type that just likes mindless and intense, 90's arcade action style game play. There's just an odd sense of nostalgia that arises from playing this game that I just can't get over and it takes me back to the days when I used to play Contra on the SNES and Smash TV at the arcade. But this game has been revamped to bring the player into a modern 3D world with realistic graphics. In the end, what makes this game even more rejoicing is that the way a player can interact with their environment. You can take down entire buildings with Class-2 weapons like missiles, RPG, Rocket launchers etc. Any standing structure you see , be it a pole, a tree, a house, a corporate tower, buildings & the tallest of the structure and even objects like water tanks, all kinds of vehicles can be burnt down to ashes and buildings can be rumbled down to debris like World Trade Center from 9/11 so to make you some space or just have that evil inner satisfaction that jots in when you destroy the buildings. The same way we used to do with smashing hulk powers on an "Incredible HULK" game, Only this time with guns. I found EDF:IA quite interesting in every aspect of what someone wants from a typical Action-Adventure themed game. If you are looking for a FUN and not too serious game, albeit serious for our protagonists, you should SURELY check out this game.

If this game is considered one of the weaker Earth Defense Force games, I can't wait to play the other ones because I absolutely love this game. It feels kindof like Starship Troopers. The missions are quite long and feel like mini-movies. Kill the space ants!

When i was much younger, me and my brother were terrible at picking games. we picked the no rep, "meh" review games that werent popular. we didnt care. We picked the game based on the cover. Lo and behold one day we got our grubby hands on EDF 2017. we both together spent at least 300 hours on the game. we never beat it on inferno. that being said, I was excited for this game to come out. after quite a few hours of play, i have come up with two reviews. first one is for long time EDF players, second is for newcomers to the franchise, behold the reviews underneath. Newcomer review Pros: -giant bugs to shoot and kill -many different unique weapons, including some useless unique ones -four classes each with their own unique weapos. perks, and skills -robots -not your average shooter -funny comentary -good replay value -WTF these weapons are so cool and "weird"! they are not your usual shooter guns Cons -gameplay may be repetative especially if you use the same weapons over and over -30 fps lock -cant use all weapons with all classes -short story Long time EDF players Pros -nostalgia -new enemies -new maps Cons Okay, before i get into cons, these are for those who specifically want that old nostalgic feel. there will be a lot -classes. you cant use all weapons with all classes and it loses that feeling of you being just a soldier amongst the ranks -weapons arent that unique compared to 2017. no assult rifles that have 999 rounds, about as accurate as a political campaign and deals massive damage. no more 100m blast radius rockets. etc. -hectors dont flinch. i used to spray them just to keep the bullets away, now all you can do is run -wasps. f*cking wasps. all they do is fly so fast they give you a headache and they have lots of health. -ant hills dont die after shooting them. you have to plant bombs. bloody annoying when you have 150 ants around you squirting acid and your plant gets reset. -vehicles are garbage, but even worse than 2017 garbage -explosions hurt you. no more running into the center of the explosion to pick up the weapons crate -what a terrible campaign. so short, story is terrible, and levels arent unique. no underground, no beach, just city maps. overall, great game for newcomers to the series. if you play the game you will LOVE it, but then will wonder just how much better the others can be. if you have an xbox, i recommend you pick up 2017 immediately.

This game has no right to be this fun. I watched my wife play it and shook my head, wondering, "How can she stand this? I'm tolerant of poor graphics and plain gameplay, but this is straight-up dumb." With great reluctance, I bought it on a sale and gave it a go. ...I don't know. I literally do not know. But it works. You have to turn your brain off, but that's what this game is for. You just run around blowing bugs and mechs up. Sometimes you hop in minigun turrets or anti-air defenses and pummel the enemy. Your guns are little different from other games'. Your story doesn't have more depth than young adult ficion. Your movement doesn't feel all that special. That's it. But by goodness, it works. No, the trailer ain't pretty. It takes two minutes at the controls to tell whether this game will satisfy your itch. Just... give it a shot. Refund if you don't like it. "Mindless third-person bug shooter," yeah no kidding, lol.
