  • The most epic egg-based arsenal ever witnessed!

Ponpu is a pretty cool Bomberman inspired game. Small story mode and a variety of multiplayer modes, coupled with the cheap price makes it a decent party game to pick up with friends during a sale. Not a whole lot too the game mechanically speaking, but it is fun, and it has an art style that really pops.

No key rebinding, the graphics look choppy and weird and there is no settings to look at. The hitboxes can be very strange and frustrating. The animation looks really nice, but that's about it... Single player levels are a bit teddious and not too interesting, at least until the 3rd boss. Also, the world menus are a bit too slow and it can be a bit irritating, but I'm nitpicking.

The only way to describe this game is if you take the game mechanics from Bomberman, gave it the gameplay and general vibe of the Blinding of Isacc, and give it absolutely stunning hand-drawn visuals. A refreshing game to see, simple yet hard can get pretty complex once you start getting into the game mechanics. The story mode has a very natural learning curve that will definitely keep you on your toes, and those bosses will take many retries to beat. Not only that, the game has other game modes such as the classic deathmatch, the teamwork-based paint battle, and my personal favourite, the very high-passed coin steal. A great purchase for those who like an easy to pick up story mode and also for those wanting to buy a great game to play with friends.

Ponpu is NOT a very good bomberman successor. It isnt really a very good anything else. First off, it looks beautiful. I love the clean, kinda gross art style and world setting. It looks and sounds wonderful! But thats about it. Less than an hour in, I fought two bosses. Each level was just boring. You didnt do anything. There were no incentives to explore. there were no reasons to do anything besides race to teh finish line. Placing bombs feels awkward because they plop down in front of you. Its on a grid system that you cant really see all that well so I was getting harmed because I couldn't compute placing my bombs, not walking on teh spikes and being aggressive towards enemies, which are all kind of boring. Maybe later levels introduce any powerups at all? Any bonuses or reasons to collect these feathers? I just don't know why I would keep playing. Side note, not a world ender but something that really bothered me. No Vsync. So I had little screen tears when the background scrolled. Which is most of the time. I was really looking forward to this, I was disappointed. Refund requested before I waste too much time. I'll spend my steam credit on something I'll actually enjoy.

After some time with the game and almost being done with the story mode, I'm pretty mixed, but more on the negative side. Ponpu is clearly inspired by that of Super Bomberman for the SNES, and it does a good job of making the idea unique: A game with different kinds of characters with different bomb abilities, a beautiful, yet wacky art style that ties in well with the goofy music backing the game, and overall a fresh take on the Bomberman games. However, at times I found the redundancy of the story mode really sank in and made the game pretty boring: Walk around, blow things up to get rainbow feathers, kill enemies, get the gold key, move on- three normal levels and one boss, each stage. After the first three bosses, I was expecting some sort of change to how to advance on the levels/the challenge of beating the story. Yet all it did was change the look of the level, the look/difficulty of some enemies, and that's about it. I do really enjoy the bosses, though, and I think Purple Tree did a very good job of making some nice boss fights in the story. Multiplayer is a completely different story: I could imagine it being fun with friends after a short amount of time, but after that, much like the story, it just felt very repetitive with no endgame besides being 1st place/achievements. I think multiplayer could improve through the use of more powerups to your bombs, or even more game types for multiplayer. It just feels very stagnant, besides the random levels in each game you play. Overall, I want to love Ponpu, I really do, but for me it missed the mark on keeping the fun/attention consistent, and at times I would find myself getting bored running around the story mode and doing the same thing over and over. There was a lot of consideration into designing this game, it's very clear, but the game itself doesn't do itself justice and lacks replayability and overall longevity.
