    Warning - Asset Flip!

It was just a matter of time before some shady developer used the still running war on Ukraine as a theme for their asset flipped trash and now it happened. "Protect Ukraine" is an asset flip of Tower Defense Toolkit 4 by SongGameDev. While using the asset to build something with it is absolutely okay this "game" is just the example levels supplied with the asset with some minor Ukraine theming. The background has been replaced with a map of Ukraine (taken from Maps of Europe) and some 3D models from various sources. There's also some Ukrainian folk music tossed in to really drive the point home. As you can imagine the "game" is extremely short as it's just the four example maps provided with TDTK4. The systems have not been changed at all and so the game is extremely easy. Once you've played through all of the maps you're done, there's nothing here in terms of replay value. I find it absolutely deplorable how the "developer" is abusing a still active conflict which brings incredible pain and suffering to the Ukrainian people to get people to buy this asset flipped garbage. Please don't support the "developer" of this disgusting crap and don't buy this. There are plenty of better tower defense games on Steam that are actual full fledged games, don't fall for this scam. I was waiting for some shady dev to create a game (even better/worse, an asset flip) referencing the war on Ukraine. So fresh from my backburner of stupid purchases, we have "Protect Ukraine". In fact, it's so fresh, it's still raw. It barely had time to cook on my wishlist when I bought it so you don't have to. Impulsive purchases aside, this is just an asset flip of this. The only difference is a map of Ukraine slapped on as a background and slavic music playing during gameplay to be more on topic, I guess. There are four maps, which, judging from the screenshots of the Unity asset pack, are the demo levels without a single change. Overall, you get 15 minutes of play time. The game itself is incredibly easy too, and the only way to lose is to not care. The shamelessness of the dev must be huge, maybe matching mine even. It was just a matter of time until someone sells their soul to exploit a political conflict for their own financial gain on Steam, though I would have expected a generic FPS asset flip to start it off. It happens with every event, though that doesn't make it less atrocious. In fact, abusing an ongoing war is probably even worse. Please don't buy this game (or rather, asset demo). I've played better flash games for free back then. There's plenty of other tower defense games that are actually worth your time and money, and without the shameless inclusion of current world events for the sake of including them. Like the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, this has no reason to exist.

A beautiful and poignant commentary on the crisis in Ukraine that evokes a raw, visceral reaction in the player as they undertake the role of the nation's defender, doing their best to put a stop to the "creeps" that are invading. While the game is not challenging whatsoever and takes less than twenty minutes to beat, it was an unforgettable twenty minutes nonetheless and very much worth the $0.64 I spent on it. The game's messages are subtly provided through the deceptive menus, which trick and confuse the player to instil within him the same feeling of frustration and hatred that the Ukrainian citizens must feel when they see Putler eating their babbys. The first example of this can be found within the perks menu, in which one perk titled "Energy Capacity II," which is preceded by the perk "Energy Capacity I". An ordinary gamer would think "I can buy Energy Capacity II after I buy Energy Capacity I, surely!" but the gamer would be wrong. You cannot, in fact, unlock "Energy Capacity II" at all. Its unlock requirement is "Energy Capacity II". You cannot take the "Energy Capacity II" perk without having "Energy Capacity II". Very clever! Additionally, the menu lists level 2's creep path as "procedurally generated". This, however, is also untrue as the path starts out the exact same every time you play this level. Finally, the last level (level 4) is supposed to be "set to endless mode," as the game puts it, but it is not. There is a finite amount of creeps in level 4, just the same as in every other level. These design decisions were made to fill you with dread and unease, as you don't know if you can trust the one source of information closest to you in this game, the same way the Ukrainians felt they could not trust their big neighbours in Russia. The soundtrack and map design is superb, of course, and the entire experience is sure to bring a tear to your eye, especially after you find out that 0% of the game's proceeds are going to help the babbys in Ukraine. Play this game if you want to feel like you're really part of the Reddit volunteer battalion making a difference on the frontlines!
