Salthe Features

This is the “ comedy” of Salthe

A jester turns a human life to comedy,

and weaves a thrilling tale of Salthe's memory.

How did Salthe die, at the end of despair?

Join us, audience, as we wind our way there.

“ Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.”

At the end of a journey of blood, despair, regret, and madness—

a stage perched on the razor's edge dividing life and death.

With no audience to cheer, at a jester's direction, Salthe performs her past.

To learn the reason for her death.

To return to the world of life.

Each scene is full of scorn and mockery,

she writhes and struggles, through to the end

of the tale of Salthe's life—a comedy——

Dramatis Personae

  • Salthe: The star of this performance, known far and wide as the finest actress in Mersin's national theatre troupe. Clever and competent, she has always balanced her stage work and her royal duties with skill. Now she relives her time as Mersin's crown princess while searching for the reason for her death on Kloun's phantasmagoric stage.

  • Marie: A kind-hearted nun, Salthe's childhood friend. Lives alone in a church outside town, where she cares for children who have lost their parents. The orphanage's finances are dire, but she keeps a cheerful smile while making ends meet. She'll never back down once her mind is made up. Salthe has been helping her look for adoptive parents for the orphans.

  • Kloun: An enigmatic jester who grants Salthe a chance to return to life from the liminal stage. Professes to be Salthe's friend, but never drops a theatrical facade.

"You know what really makes me laugh, Kloun? I used to think that my life was a tragedy. But now I realize... it's a f‎u‎c‎king comedy." - Princess Salthe of Mersin Poor, abused princess who only ever wanted to be an insufferable theatre kid goes full Joker mode after a gratuitous amount of time is spent on her and her best friend being betrayed, r‎a‎p‎ed, and tortured over and over and over again. Filled to bursting with text, r‎a‎p‎e, torture, text, r‎a‎p‎e, humiliation, text, r‎a‎p‎e, mindbreak, a little more text, a lot more r‎a‎p‎e, and even some gore, this isn't for the faint of heart, and if there's a more pretentious, depressing, and long-winded eroge out there, I've yet to play it. Which is to say, I loved this, a‎nd need more.

Gothic [EXPLETIVE] murder mystery - the visual novel. So this is a little difficult to talk about without spoilers. The best way to describe this VN is that it is a mystery game where you are trying to uncover the cause of your own death using fragments of your memories as clues that get pieced together. Things that seem to be totally unrelated or even come out of nowhere are all tied up in a way that will make you go "oh, that's what that is!" or "oh that makes so much sense!" and it does so in a way that ALMOST makes up for the crap you are meant to push through. Speaking of which, and to no surprise, this game does have a lot of H-scenes. I'm not kidding, there are so many of them, and though they all feel organic, they also tend to go on for a while. On more than one occasion I found myself thinking "get on with it!" so if you only care about the story, you may find yourself using that handy flash-forward button at the bottom. I won't blame you if you turn away from this game because of such content. Now is probably where I should discuss the elephant in the room. This game gets dark. And I mean DARK. The game comes censored and there is a VERY good reason for that. You can use an easy patch to uncensor it (and you should, since the game will skip quite a bit if you don't) but just be warned that this VN does not shy away from using mature themes to advance its story. For what it's worth, the game will warn you if you are about to make a decision that will REALLY screw you up - you can turn this feature off if you would like - but there is still some stuff that I do not feel comfortable writing here that you will have no choice but to witness. Which is fair, given that you are trying to figure out the events leading up to your murder. Should you brave all of that, though, you are rewarded with a well written Renaissance murder mystery with gorgeous visuals and superb voice acting, with a gothic theater aesthetic that is rarely done right. If you can handle themes such as rape, torture, and worse, I do recommend this visual novel. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Once again this is where I should start with "I do recommend this game BUT". Being a 18+ game about rape and torture said themes are for the most part there for the sake of being there and overall start looking fake, bland and uninspired pretty much from the start (and there's A LOT of them in the game). I get that at least some of them were needed for the plot but it's too repetitive. On the other hand the plot itself was pretty good, I enjoyed the small clues here and there that helped piece the full story together way before it was revealed and it was still interesting to read when it was. So pretty much the best part of this game is revealed at the very end so if you're confident you can get there through all the 18+ content (unless of course hours and hours of rape scenes are your thing) I'd say go for it.

Salthe was a promising story concept, but ultimately a revolting foray into torture porn and rape fantasy. I seriously question the intended audience for this VN. All of the characters ended up being hateful, and at the end I had no idea what the meaning of it all was. What was I supposed to take away from this story? The world is full of horrible people?
Everyone but Jean and Marie died, and no one got what they wanted.
I don't read fiction to experience that--I read it to escape from that, or understand something more about the human condition. This story was completely meaningless and vile. If you must play this VN, I DO NOT recommend the 18+ patch. It adds absolutely nothing. It's simply CG after CG of graphic rape. Someone actually created those CGs and wrote the accompanying voluminous text. Think on that for a moment. That is not the kind of eroge anyone should enjoy. Who even cares all the characters are over 18? That doesn't make rape or sexual torture okay. Spoilers from here on regarding story:
This entire story could have had a very simple solution that left everyone but Salome happy. All Salthe had to do was kill Salome and take her place as queen of Mersin. Garnier could have ruled through her, while she supported Marie and continued the only thing that mattered to her--acting. The people of Mersin would have been none the wiser, and the king would have been too senile to even notice. Very few people knew Salthe was a body double. Jean knew, but would he have been so unhappy over Salome's death? He knew she was an abusive ****.
None of the gratuitous rape or torture was necessary. The only plot necessity was for Salthe to die, but because of that constraint, this is the warped and disturbing VN we got. What a tragic (not the least bit comedic) shame--this story could have been so much better without trying so hard to be "dark" and "edgy."

This game was disappointing. I feel the plot could have been handled better, to me it just felt kind of flat. It wasn't terrible, but if I could tell my past self whether or not to play this game, I'd tell them not to.

Salthe has a lot going for it, that awesome OP song, mostly good graphics, good enough voice acting, and a character in a lovely mask. I hope to see more like it from Director/author Nanami 7.

Alright, so I would like to start off by saying that this game caught me completely off guard. I decided to go into this blind and I did download the JAST patch. I am at a loss for words writing this review because of what I just experienced. This game is LOADED with NC scenes.. it's basically the entire game. I expected there to be more light shown on the overall mystery but instead I was just continuously let down by the amount of sheer misery our heroine goes through. With this also being said, I think the game served it's self proclaimed service. This story was obviously meant to invoke those horrid feelings within you while leaving you to ask "why" but there is no answer to the question. It just is and for no other reason. Big cringe. I would say the amount of time I put into this wasn't worth the pay off because the twists were very predictable. I don't want to go too far in and spoil anything but the "best" part to the entire story was near the very end mark. The real discomfort in the game came from the torture scenes. I'm going to give this a yes recommendation only because I feel the game achieved what it set out to do, even if I didn't agree with it. I wouldn't buy this full price but I'd indulge if you see it on sale. It's one for the collection for sure.

Pretty interesting story. But the finale was quite... idk it was okay. There's plot hole here and there, But TBH, She didn't deserve that ending, but yeah If you're into tragedy and stuffs then it's fine.
