I have just finished the game and I was left crying. What a journey this was and especially with the characters (i am so gonna miss them). Honestly, I did not know what I was getting into. The combat at the start was weird and confusing because this is not the usual fighting mechanics you see in other RPGs, but after some time you will understand it. I am really glad this was my first Tales of game and I do not regret buying it. Definitely in one of my favorite games. Anyways, you are here for the review. I recommend.

    A seriously good game

190 hours to do pretty much everything there is to do, including all achievements. In short: The good: Story, worldbuilding Music Combat Postgame The neutral: Map design The bad: I just want to rant about the achievements Story The story is absolutely amazing. While on the surface the things that actually happen are not at all that complex, the characters and their feelings is where most of the interesting things are. Velvet, the main character, spends an entire game trying to kill a single man and her character never feels boring or behaving weirdly. Same for the other cast members, who all pursue their own goals instead of walking after Velvet because she is saving the world and all (she's not). This makes the story and the world feel alive, and is a step up from the still-good Tales of Zestiria. Mentioning that, this game is set in the same world as a prequel to the events in that game. Having played Zestiria right before Berseria made me stuble across a lot of connections between events that are mentioned in either and affect the other, but also about certain characters (Malakhim don't generally die natural deaths). If you haven't, play Zestiria first and then come back to appreciate this gem to the fullest (not in the least because there are many quality of live improvements over Zestiria). Music Music's very, very good. If you like it after playing, try looking up the Tales of Concert 2017, which has various Tales of Berseria orchestral pieces. Combat The real-time combat works well and is balanced properly without grinding much or even any (even at the higher difficulties). The baic mechanics are quite simple: every character at all times has a number of souls, which most importantly dictates maximum combo length, maximum stamina and how easy it is to get statused. Status opponents to steal their souls, use special break soul moves to transfer souls to the opponent. Then there is the blast gauge, to switch reserve members into battle and to use ludicrously strong mystic arts. There is one main "problem", and that is Velvets break soul. If it hits an enemy, she enters a state that makes her immune to death until she reaches 1 HP. Once she reaches 1 HP, she attacks and then you can use the break soul again within invincibilty frames if you have enough souls, recover some health by virtue of the mechanic and be half-immortal again. Why do I call this a problem? Because I played with Velvet too much during my playthrough, where the other characters are also unique and fun to play, as I discovered later. Don't make the same mistake I did and also use the other characters. Combat's a lot of fun though, and being near immortal half the time can cause some intersting scenarios when trying to kill bosses that are way overleveled. Postgame There are no story spoilers here, but I wanted to tag it anyways. After the final boss, the game has I think three more entire post-game questlines, each with several boss fights that can get real difficult at the end and an EX-dungeon that ramps that difficulty up even further. That's not the problem here, I am a masochist playing on the highest difficulties and the game is still decently balanced even at those difficulties (do use the Katz in the EX-dungeon!). The postgame is well done. Map design This game was originally made for PS3, and all maps are up to that standard. It was then ported to PS4 for the western release and with that came a nice graphics upgrade. Don't go looking for hyperrealistic trees, but you shouldn't be complaining about the quality. The main problem with the map design is that they are all a bit big and your movement is jsut slow enough to where running around enemies takes just enough time to be annoying. Completionist The problem is two of the achievements: Making a Mint and A solid B. The first requires excessive playing of minigames, or rather, doing the same combo over and over again in slash beat in deep postgame. The second requires all characters to get all titles up to lvl 2. This includes, for every character, among other things, play as them 150 times, kill 2500 enemies, get combo kills of 40+ hits, get weak point chains and the worst of all: use 250 mystic arts. This takes forever, the mystic arts alone take ~8 hours optimally (doing the same thing over and over again, mind you) if you start from scratch, which you will be annoyingly close to since AI doesn't like using mystic arts. Combo kills can generally be done in slash beat, but look up Magilou's combo, it is stupid precise. The other requirements aren't as bad if you play as different characters during your playthrough, but this still is an unnecessary time sink. Don't bother with it unless you are just that much of a completionist. Conclusion If you are a fan of JRPGs, this is a gem you can't miss out on. If you don't know whether you are a fan of JRPGs, this is a great title and the connection with Zesteria only enhances the story, this game is perfectly great without having played Zestiria.

Play it because of the story, Berseria's story is brilliant! I've spent 92 hours playing through this game mostly because I wanted to see every nook and cranny of it. Not many games lately make me enjoy collecting, hunting and upgrading stuff like this game did, until it was time to end everything. I didn't master all item skills or max out any arts so don't even bother focusing on that, it just takes too much time. Don't expect much of the battle system either, its over complicated and at the end of the day, you're just smashing buttons in a pattern that more or less makes sense BUT, it was enough to make it enjoyable every time there was a fight. I loved Velvet, magnificent MC and the story developed quite well. Give it a try just because of the story at least.
