Pokémon is one of THE most popular gaming franchises in the world that has captivated millions of fans with its exciting monster-taming RPGs for many years now. And with Pokémon Unite, the company aims to expand its horizon to include fans from other genres as well. And we already know just how loyal MOBA fans really are. Unite is Pokémon’s very first strategic team battle game inspired by the likes of League of Legends and DOTA 2.
Developed by TiMi Studio Group, Pokémon Unite has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from both players and critics alike, and for very good reasons. The game innovates the MOBA genre with a unique Pokémon touch that makes these already intense 5v5 battles more challenging and fun. Pokémon Unite has been out and around for a while, but if you are just getting started and feeling a little overwhelmed, we have got you covered with our ultimate Pokémon Unite Guide.
We will cover everything from the very basics of the game to choosing the right Pokémon according to your play style, with tips and tricks to increase your chances of winning the game.
Getting Started with Pokémon Unite
Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play MOBA game where you play as two teams of 5 Pokémon pit against each other in intense strategic battles. The gameplay is similar to other popular action MOBA games like League of Legends and DOTA, but there are certain distinctions that make Pokémon Unite stand out from the crowd. The game comes packed with all your favorite Pokémon from the franchise in a new and exciting setting.
And just like any other Pokémon game, each Pokémon in Unite has its own strengths and weaknesses that player needs to understand in order to make the most of their character’s abilities and skills on the battlefield. Speaking of Battlefield, Pokémon Unite also features a ton of exciting maps with their own unique gameplay mechanics and secrets that you can take advantage of. But with constant updates and new additions to the game, it can get a little daunting for beginners to get started with this game.
Keeping that in mind, we have prepared this ultimate Pokémon Unite guide to help you master each and every major aspect of the game.
How to Choose The Right Pokémon in Pokémon Unite
As a beginner, the first and most important decision you need to take in Pokémon Unite is what Pokémon you want to play with. Unite offers a wide variety of Pokémon that players can choose from, each with their own unique skills and abilities that can come in handy in battle. However, with so much variety, it can get a little daunting for players to choose one. If that’s something you are struggling with, fret not, these tips and tricks will make that important decision easy for you.
- Understand Your Playstyle: Before you even begin to make that decision, you need to understand your own playstyle. According to your playstyle, you can choose a role and a Pokémon that complements your playstyle and fits the role. If you have played a MOBA before, you’d know exactly where your strength lies - either you play aggressively, defensively, or as a support character who loves helping your teammates.
- Choose a Pokémon Based On Your Playstyle: Pokémon Unite features a total of 5 different classes that you can choose from. You have Attackers, Speedsters, Defenders, All-rounders, and Supporters. Now, depending on your playstyle, you can pick one from any of these 5 classes. If you are someone who loves to be in the center of the action, Attacker is the right type for you. If you are someone who likes to stay away from enemies but still help their mates, you should go for a Supporter-type Pokémon.
- Learn Each Pokémon’s Strengths and Weaknesses: One of the most important things you need to do as a beginner is learn your Pokémon’s strengths and weaknesses. Make a list of the Pros and Cons of each character in your class and pick the one that is more useful on the battlefield and complements your playstyle as well. This doesn’t only help you pick the right character but also ensures that you counter other Pokémon by learning their weaknesses and exploiting them in battle.
- Keep an eye on Meta Characters: Just like any other MOBA title, Pokémon Unite is always updating and characters that are performing exceptionally now, might not be so useful in the next update. You need to keep an eye on Meta and make changes to your team accordingly.
These are a few important things you need to keep in mind while choosing your Pokémon in Pokémon Unite. If you are unsure, it’s important that you experiment around and explore your strengths and weaknesses first. As a beginner, you can always go for Pikachu, due to its great all-round abilities and pickup and play nature.
Understanding the Map
Just like any other MOBA game, it’s super important that you understand how the map works in order to craft the right strategy, pick the right role and win more games in Pokémon Unite. Basically, Pokémon Unite’s map is also divided into three different lanes, top, bottom, and center. Each lane has a goal zone where you can score points. The goal of the game is to score more points than the enemy team before the 10-minute time runs out.
The top and bottom lanes are the most important lanes in the game. These lanes are where most of the action happens and where you will need to score most of your points. The center lane is more of a buff-up area where only one player can quickly level up. As a rule of thumb for MOBAs, you need to have 2 players on the top lane, 2 players on the bottom lane, and only one player in the central lane.
Here are some general tips and tricks that will teach you all that you need to know about maps in Pokémon Unite:
- Wild Pokémon: Pokémon Unite maps have wild Pokémon scattered around the different lanes. You can battle these wild Pokémon to increase your chance of leveling up your Pokémon and unlock learn new moves.
- Goal Zones and Score: Both Pokémon teams have goal zones on each side of the map. Once you reach a certain level on your Pokémon, you can score points by entering the enemy goal zone to increase your chance of winning the game. But it’s not worth entering their goal zones if you don’t heavily outnumber them as they will receive free healing and boost inside their own zone.
- Objective Pokémon: If you want to score higher and more quickly to help your team win, you need to find objective Pokémon. These are special Pokémon that randomly spawn in certain areas of the map, at certain times and you can fight them to earn an instant score. Zapdos is the most important of these objective Pokémon who spawn at the central lane. Whichever team gets the final hit on this Pokémon gets 20 for each team member.
- Environment and Hiding Places: The map is full of different terrain features that you can use to your advantage. For example, you can use the bushes to hide from the enemy team or you can use the walls to block attacks. It’s important to understand your surroundings and use them to your own advantage.
Mastering the Battle Mechanics
Battles in the Pokémon Unite lasts for up to 10 minutes and the team with the highest score at the end gets crowned the winner. But during those intense 10-minute matches, there are many things you need to keep in mind to increase your chances of winning the game. During the first minutes (1-2) of the match, you need to take on as many wild Pokémon as possible to level up your Pokémon.
Once you do that, the next thing to focus on knocking out the enemy players and advancing to their goal zones. But don’t try to be a hero, Pokémon Unite is all about teamwork. Only take on enemy goal zones when you are sure that you easily outnumber the enemy team. Otherwise, they would simply get healed up in their goal zones to execute a powerful comeback.
When you reach around seven minutes in the game, two powerful objective Pokémon, Rotom and Drednaw will appear at the top and bottom lanes of the map. Make it your priority to defeat them as it will grant you extra points and beneficial effects for your team. And finally, with two minutes remaining, Zapdos will spawn in the middle. Defeating this Pokémon can help you secure the win even if you are behind by a huge margin.
How to Win More Games in Pokémon Unite
There’s no shortcut to winning more games in Pokémon Unite, it takes hard work, dedication, and practise. However, there are a few things and strategies that you can use to become a better player in the game and increase your chances of winning. Here are a few of my personal strategies and tips for that:
- Use Environment for Ambush: Take advantage of the long grass on the map to execute ambush attacks on your enemy. The enemy teams can’t see you when you are hiding behind bushes, which gives you a tactical advantage over your enemy. But do it with caution as the enemy team can spot you and take you out, if alone.
- Finish Objective Pokémon: We have already talked about the importance of objective Pokémon. The other thing you need to keep in mind is that it’s the final attack on objective Pokémon that actually counts. No matter who does the most damage, the team with the final blow takes the win.
- Don’t Crowd the Central Lane: At the start of the game, it's best to have only one Pokémon in the central area to quickly level up. Central Lane only gives so many resources for one player to properly level up and if you crowd it to share the resources, it will just make it less affective.
- Stay Vigilant and Use Mini-Map: We often get lost in the hectic battle and overlook important things. It’s best to make it a hobby to frequently check the mini-map to stay aware of the overall situation. Pay attention to teammates' positions, enemy movements, and the state of objectives to plan your next move. This information will help you make informed decisions and adapt your strategy.
These are just a few of the many things that help increase your chances of winning more battles in Pokémon Unite. But the most important of them all is to practice. The more time you spend learning and making strategies, the better you get in this game.
Items and Upgrades
This is something that most beginners often pay very little attention to. So basically, there are two types of items in Pokémon Unite - Held Items and Battle Items. Held Items are items that can be equipped to your Pokémon to give them a stat boost or other benefit. These items can be purchased with in-game currency or earned as rewards. Held Items give your Pokémon special abilities, such as the ability to heal, increase movement speed or shield themselves.
Then there are Battle Items that can be used during the battle to give you an advantage in the fight. You can think of these as temporary power-ups like the ability to stun or slow down the enemy team. There are also Battle Items that can be used to increase your damage output or movement speed during a battle.
You can equip up to three different held items at once to mix and match different abilities that you think can be helpful in battle. It’s alright to experiment with different items to see what works best for you and complements your playstyle.
As you progress through the match, you'll earn Aeos Energy that can be used to upgrade your held items. It’s better to prioritize upgrading items that will have the most impact on your Pokémon's performance. It's often beneficial to fully upgrade one or two key items rather than partially upgrade multiple items.
Advanced Gameplay Techniques
Last but not least, there are a few more techniques that you can use to improve your gameplay in Pokémon Unite and increase your chances of winning these intense battles against rival teams.
- Use Precise Controls: Timing your moves can be the difference between a win or loss. In order to make the most of your Pokémon’s ability, you need to have precise controls, especially if you are playing as a speedster. To get more precise controls, you can use a controller or the dynamic keyboard-mouse duo by playing the game on pc using the GameLoop Android emulator. More detail on that later.
- Smooth and Stutter-Free Gameplay: Mobile phones have surely become powerful but not everyone can afford high-end phones. PCs generally have more processing power and better graphics capabilities than mobile devices even on low specs. However, if you don’t have a PC, you can also improve your mobile’s performance by running a clean-up before starting the game and using do not disturb mode. You can even tweak the game’s settings if your game isn’t running smoothly.
- Team Chemistry: If you want to win more games, your team needs to have good team chemistry. You can do that by playing with your friends and coming up with strategies and team formation that complements each other’s playstyle and hides away their weaknesses for max performance.
