Cloud waves can also form far from mountains. Just like the waves that the wind creates on the water, the clouds also spread in waves. When included in a moist layer, lens clouds can form on the crests of the waves and gaps between the waves. Pilots do not like these waves very much, as it will be a problematic and shaky flight. Sometimes mountain waves also occur in dry areas of the atmosphere that do not form clouds, causing aircraft (not air gap!) to be caught in open-air turbulence (CAT).
