If you've played MOWAS in any variety, the first part of this review should be redundant, but for people new to the engine, its important to know the basics of your getting into. Essentially, the game is simulated on a man-by-man basis, with each individual unit possessing a name, class (kinda), and grid style inventory. Thus, every weapon, ammo type, grenade, helmet, fuel tank, etc is all tracked on a very in-depth individual level. When a unit dies, they leave their weapon and a corpse, which can be looted by any other man for any equipment they might have possesed (one of the unique draws of the game). In actual combat, each man can be moved as an individual, team, or squad depending on the amount of units you are managing. More on this later. You also have the ability to directly control any unit at any point, taking control of their movement and aim to devastating effect. GOH uniquely adds a third person mode, which counts for a million coolness points, but is often not super practical. Along the same lines, cannons and vehicles also have individual crew members operating them. They are tracked identically to infantry, with inventories and classes and names. This affords a lot of depth that many games can't hope to have. In armored warfare, for example, a lethal penetration may kill half the crew, leaving two men to bail. Those two men could be used to supliment crew on another tank, or (more commonly) for suicidal satchel attacks and the like. Low caliber anti-tank munitions also might JUST kill your crew, allowing the tank to be captured and turned against you. Same goes for cannons, which can be decrewed and recrewed by you or your enemy. This, to me, is the major draw of this style of game, and GOH is the most modern example of it. So how does it hold up? Pretty damn good, but I'll start by addressing a common hang-up. My major issue with the MOW games has always been the dissonance between infantry emphasis and the reality of WW2. When it comes down to it, infantry are great at a ton of stuff. They are easy to conceal, hard to hit, and can wield extremely devestating (though often close range) weapons. You also have the afformentioned level of depth on the individual infantry unit, which is commonly lost in the large scale destructive combat of the eastern front. To put it blunty: infantry are meatbags that die to everything, but are overwhelmingly neccesary for everything. MOWAS2 got around this by making infantry frustratingly hard to kill, GOH does not. Infantry die to pretty much everything and one inattentive or stupid advance (or stupid stationary position) can easily see a section go night-night. This can be frustrating for some people, which I understand. Meticuluosly kitting out your Riflemen with captured Panzerfausts and MG34s just to see them wiped out by a single 105mm shell is infuriating, but that's World War II, and that's where this game ironically shines. The game is called Gates of Hell because randomness rules all things. Sometimes your 88mm shell will bounce harmlessly (several times) off a T-34/85, only to have it annihilate the cannon in a single shot. Your flamethrower might ignite themselves or their allies on accident, or get their tank blown by a stray bullet. You own tanks run over your men, your own artillery might fall short, and your left wondering what you did wrong. Get that out of your head. Shit happens, people die. Welcome to Hell. If you don't like the idea that your best effort might fall victim to the maelstorm of modern warfare, then the game just aint gonna be for you. If you want your German über Guns to brew commie tanks all day like in Guderian's book, it ain't gonna be for you. If you want your Russian conscript horde to overrun several dug in autocannons with nothing but the power of the Rodina, uhhhh the game might be for you? Watch your spacing I guess, and don't expect a miracle. Either way, the game thrives on a simple brutal randomness that affects your enemy as much as it affects you. It is frustrating when it goes against you, and brilliantly uplifting when it goes for you, but you can't have your cake and eat it. If what I just described sounds exactly up your alley, and your willing to put aside a competetive need for victory for a appreciation of the realities of combat, then the game just might be for you. Just get used to the term "unlucky," never overestimate anything, never underestimate anything and go raise some hell. The gates await.

I cannot recommend this game in its current state. Six months ago, I was absolutely ecstatic for the release of this game. As a veteran MOWAS 2 player with over 1400 hours, I was excited for something new, the supposed "MOWAS 3". Wow, unrivaled realism? Different ammunition types for tanks? This was going to be a standalone version of the RobZ mod! Unfortunately, this naviete was broken once I got my hands on the Open Beta. I first thought "This feels off, but I think that the devs will change things throughout the course of the Open Beta" Here we are, and nothing has changed. Not to mention that the devs decided to release this game in a bundle for $35,. IMHO, it's pretty scummy to charge nearly forty dollars for such a half-baked product. Oh, and more "paid expansions" are on the way? I feel as though this is DMS trying to find a way to milk more money from the MOWAS 2 fanbase. Remember when the GoH devs said that "there would not be any FPS direct control"? I sure do. And then the community complained, and the devs buckled. I've always been a strong believer that the new direct control that CtA brought was nothing more than a gimmick. I understand that you're able to toggle between different options, however, I believe that the Direct Control should've never been tampered with. Whatever happened to "no healthbars"? Call to Arms, for the failure of a game it is, had the option to toggle healthbars. You know what's the worst part? The Open Beta closes and the very next day they release. I'm not an expert, but that doesn't seem like a whole lot of time to make a myriad of bug fixes and tweaks, The game is incredibly unpolished. Text in loading screens isn't formatted correctly (runs off into the background), a quote from Zhukov was given to Eisenhower? How are these things missed? Movement of units feels clunky, even worse than MOWAS 2. Often I will double click to have units sprint, and instead they will have a Sunday afternoon walk to the frontline. Units will not dive out of the way of an enemy grenade. MOWAS 2, with its punishing AI, did this better. Explosion effects are paltry, and the only real feedback you get is obnoxious screen-shake that you cannot disable in the options. The devs have said that this is for "immersion and disorienting the player". Obnoxious screenshake is used to compensate for terrible explosion effects because the devs couldn't be bothered. MOWAS 2, a game from 2014 had more weight and feel. Without screenshake, explosions are often just a puff of smoke and then nothing. Don't get me started on the combat. The TTK is that of vanilla MOWAS 2, and in game I feel as if I need to hose down a single soldier with a coaxial MG for an eternity before he falls. For a game that champions on itself on immersion and realism, it sure feels real arcady. The tank combat is horrendous. Light tanks will have slugging matches with each other, while a FlaK 36 will bounce a shell off the side of a BT-7 because the game said so. The infantry units feel all the same. Ammunition compatibility is a joke. A PPSH-41 that has been arbitrarily assigned "stick magazine" is magically not able to use drum magazines. Overall, the combat feels like a carbon copy of vanilla MOWAS 2. The bullets move at the same speed, and the AT guns feel like they have the muzzle velocity of a wet noodle. I'm not asking for Combat Mission: Shock Force here, but I would've thought that a game that was in development for like six years would outdo a free mod for MOWAS 2. The bugs and crashes are another beast entirely. When I was playing the Open Beta I thought, "hmm the bugs don't seem too bad" The full release looks like No Man's Sky on launch in comparison to the Beta. I'm unable to progress through the third mission of the German campaign because the scripting on it is faulty. Did those YouTubers with press copies actually play any else other than the Dynamic Campaign? The game holds your hand the entire way. On the second German campaign mission, the defenses ARE PRE-MADE. You literally don't have to do anything. I don't expect to grab a shovel and dig an anti-tank ditch myself, but PLEASE let me play the game, for goodness sake! Or, for the first Soviet mission, the game goes "put dummy guns here pretty please :))" I'm not a big stickler for graphics, but the models for infantry are disappointing. Sure, they're better than MOWAS 2, but my dog could probably make better models than MOWAS 2. The (FREE) RobZ mod for MOWAS 2 had better graphic fidelity in terms of infantry models, vehicles, mounted weapons, etc. Did I mention that the Blau Division volunteers have randomly generated German names and speak German? Instead of y'know, Spanish names and dialogue? Where's the immersion? Mine sure is broken. The devs promised an "immersive representation of the Ostfront" and yet, are so far away. So this game is centered completely around the Ostfront, huh? Where are the Romanians, Italians, Hungarians and Czech? Where are the nearly 300,000 Italians that fought and died on the Eastern Front? Oh wait, maybe it'll be for a paid DLC! Oh joy! I feel like this game needed another year of development. The final product feels rushed, and I'm sad to say that I don't enjoy playing the game. I know this entire review I've been really harsh. That's because I'm disappointed. I REALLY wanted this game to be good. However, as the days rolled closer towards release, I realized that this wouldn't be the case. Maybe in a year or two, this game will be better, but without realism mods for an already "realistic" game, I can't recommend. For those interested in this game and have never played a MOW game, go buy MOWAS 2 and download the RobZ realism mod. You'll get a much more realistic experience for cheaper. And for veterans of MOWAS 2, I feel you. I know your excitement. Save your money. I'm tired of YouTubers kissing this game's ass and hailing it as the greatest thing to grace RTS players since RobZ. It's blind endorsement for a product that hasn't even gotten major bugs and crashes figured out. I know I mentioned MOWAS 2 more than a cow goes moo, and that's for a reason. Why spend a steak dinner's worth of money for a reskin of something you already have? I mentioned the RobZ realism mod often because I believe that was the pinnacle of the MOWAS 2 experience. It brought life to a community that was aching for something new, something fresh. I cannot say the same for this game. Those who disagree with this review will say "It's not fair to compare a mod to a vanilla game" That's literally the point I am trying to make! RobZ, and a few others published a fantastic mod for MOWAS 2 in four years. I don't know for certain, but I'm sure RobZ had worked on the Realism mod for a lot less hours than a FULL DEVELOPMENT TEAM WITH THE BACKING OF DIGITALMINDSOFT. I think that it's a sick joke that a free mod for MOWAS 2 managed to capture the experience of the Second World War better than an overbloated mod dressed up as a game, supported by a dedicated development team. I will say that the GEM engine being x64 is a welcome improvement. Look. If you enjoy the game, that's your opinion. But it's not something we haven't already got. I have nearly 20 hours on the Open Beta and full release combined, and I say thumbs down. I wouldn't haven been so critical and held such high expectations if the devs hadn't advertised GoH as "Offering unrivalled immersion to give the most legitimate WWII RTS/RTT to date." This half-baked mod is definitely NOT the greatest WWII RTS to date. I will update this review if the issues I felt the game had are resolved.

Game is excellent, only wish they had a world map to conquer like hearts of iron and a way of grouping platoons instead of combining them.

So after 398.6 of playing this game I can happily say that I love it and would recommend it to any RTS fan! It took me a while to learn the ropes for this game as it can be daunting/difficult when you're first starting (So many mechanics and things to do!) So to start off, I mainly play the dynamic conquest mode which is my personal favourite. The single player campaign missions are cool as well, but I kind of started off with the dynamic conquest and it's been my favourite since. In dynamic conquest you start by choosing which nation you wish to play us (Currently there's 3 nations, Germany, Soviet Union, Finland, and I think there will be another faction in the future as a DLC) When starting dynamic conquest, you get given a specific amount of resources/research points (Depending on what difficulty you select) You use these resources to buy the units you wish to take on your offensive/defensive missions and the research points you use to unlock new units when you're progressing your conquest campaign, so basically you start with standard infantry/early war tanks and you progress onto better/more elite infantry, more late-war tanks etc. The amount of different units each factions has is crazy and that leads to so many different ways to play the game so the amount of replayability is pretty big! Obviously there are the cons as well, like issues with unit pathfinding (Sometimes you need to babysit a vehicle so it gets to it's destination as it might get stuck at a certain point) The A.I could be better in terms of how they act/counter your playstile, although I can understand that making better A.I is no easy task and it depends on what game engine is being used and what limitations it has. There could be some more additions to conquest, ie more special abilities as airstrikes/recon, etc and maybe even have some special tasks on some of the dynamic conquest missions to make it more varied (Like having to kill a specific high-value target or have a side activity where you need to destroy an enemy convoy). The graphics are really great (At least for my eyes) Infantry models look nice, tanks are really detailed (They also change camouflage/uniforms depending on what season your battle is in, ie winter/summer) . The FX of explosions/smoke is great and the game has really nice destruction. You can blow up buildings, fences, telephone poles etc. The sounds and their quality is peak as well! Really makes you immersed in the battle! (Plus the devs are currently working on a sound overhaul/skin update which will get released in the future) I've experienced many great moments whilst playing dynamic conquest. One of my fave moments was me playing as the Germans on the attacking side, The main problem was me putting too much research points for better infanty/support units and not researching better tanks/at guns. So what happened was I capped the first attack point with my panzer pioneers and my 2 PZ3 tanks which was fairly easy. Had to defeat some standard Soviet infantry and some dudes with AT rifles. The Soviets sent some ZIS trucks with maxims as counters, but they were no match for my tanks and got annihilated pretty quickly! Fast forward 10 mins from me capturing the point and I can hear the roar of a tank in the distance. Initially I assumed it was something like a T-70 which did not phase me at all, but 2 min later, I see my panzer 3 getting knocked out with 1 shot. I check the map, zoom in on the location and see that it's a f**ng KV-1 and I had no proper counter for it. The first thing I tried was driving around the KV-1's far side to get some shots off with my 2nd PZ3. Got a few shots in trying to break the tracks of the KV, but my attempt turned futile as it just deflected every shot of my PZ3. Seconds later, the enemy sent another reinforcement wave from the same side the KV came. It was a blob of infantry units which included some guys with AT rifles. My PZ3 got shocked by a few shots from the AT rifles, I tried to get away, but in the end my PZ3 got tracked and it was stuck. I had to watch as that KV-1 turned it's turret towards my paper PZ3 menacingly and I just accepted my fate. The PZ3 was knocked out with the first shot and none of the crew members survived. The KV then started to move towards my defensive position slowly. I was thinking of a way to knock it out, but was becoming desperate. I then remembered that my Panzer Pioneers had some guys with AT nades so I attempted to crawl around it's side while it was engaging my other units at the defensive position to try and disable it. It worked out, I got 2 guys with bundle nades to get on the right side of the KV. Threw the nades. First one did absolutely nothing and the 2nd one knocked out one of it's tracks. The KV then turned to my 2 guys and gunned them down with it's MG. Brutal. At this point I was already thinking that it's GG as I had nothing to put up against it, but at that point I also had a small moment of clarity. One of my panzer pioneers has a flamethrower! At that moment I knew what I had to do! Took 3 of my guys including the flamethrower to flank the KV1 from it's right side. Thankfully it had some bushes/foliage so the KV-1 did not see my guys crawling around it. I got 2 of my guys with rifles to distract the surrounding infantry and engage in a small firefight while I was directly controlling my flamethrower guy to crawl to the back of the KV-1. Once I got to the back of the KV-1 I started burning the crew man who was repairing the track and the engine compartment of the KV-1. After a long burst of flames I could see that the KV-1 caught on fire. Finally the whole tank went in flames. All the crew members crawled out of the tank burning and at last, the KV-1 was finished. All 3 guys including the flamer got killed afterwards as there was too much infantry surrounding the tank and they overwhelmed my 3 guys, resulting in their death. All in all it was a difficult task to pull off, but when I did pull it off, it gave me an immeasurable amount of satisfaction and I just realised that even with an outdated army/units you can still find ways to deal with difficult situations in this game such as this one. Bit of a long read, but just wanted to give a small story from my own gameplay which really made me appreciate the game so much more! All in all, just want to say a massive thank you to the developers as for me, this game is amazing with so much content to explore and I can't wait for any future updates/DLC'S! Thank you for reading.

TLDR: Game is good but they are selling DLC for a DLC that is not even done yet and you have to buy a base game to play the first DLC. Gates of hell is a good game but Gates of hell is a DLC for the base game and is not standalone, Gates of hell is also not a finished DLC. Yet they are now selling an $18 DLC for Gates of hell a DLC that is not done yet and is lacking content. I do really like the game but this is scummy stuff they make you when not on sale buy Call to Arms $14.99, Call to Arms - Gates of hell $34.99 and now Call to Arms - Gates of Hell Talvisota 17.99. So they are making you buy a game a DLC for a game that is not done yet and now a DLC of a DLC that cost more than the base game dose now and both the DLCs have bugs and are lacking varying degrees of content. It's sad that back in the day people got rightfully upset about horse armor DLC and now we are here. As I said it's good and if you get the stuff on sale it's fun but I can't recommend it due to them selling DLC on top of DLC when the first one is not even done yet. Sorry I was a bit of a broken record when explaining this but I hope it gets across how the game is good but the business practices are not. (P.S. sorry for the rant and any grammar or spelling mess ups I may not have seen.)

DO NOT BUY THIS **** Do not even think about it. Don't do it. Don't. I have been with this since BETA, their updates do nothing but add some units and that is it. They still have not fixed gamebreaking bugs and the AWFUL pathfinding back from BETA, they lie on forums and close topics if people complain about the game being a broken mess. https://youtu.be/njG_4Ls9f1A https://youtu.be/7u9DQVxeC4E If you like MOWAS2, THIS GAME IS NOT IT, NOR ITS SUCCESSOR. Hell, they hire clowns as moderators for their forums, who then start spamming jokes instead of maintaining the guidelines. The amount of bugs and broken stuff in this game is so colossal, and yet instead they add new DLC faction while the base game itself is not even half fixed. Your MGs won't shoot if there are wooden little fences in-between them and the enemy infantry, while being perfectly fin if you manually control them to do so. Your infantry won't run away from grenades even if you click to run manually. Developers avoid answering that question, but it is a "confirmed kill" mechanics for grenades, forcing at least one of your soldiers to die if a grenade landed near them. https://youtu.be/A89cfkbqW1w Your STURMTIGER rockets will ricochet from a wooden fence randomly https://youtu.be/7mbYfIV9zgM , your ISU-152 won't be able to kill a single soldier if he is sitting behind a little invincible rock (yep, a lot of "props" on the map are immune to any destruction, so you won't be able to destroy a concrete wall or a pebble, while an AT gunner will sit and kill all of your tanks) https://youtu.be/a3OVzqhiunY https://youtu.be/WP0FuCa92is https://youtu.be/EO-gnIe5L-Y Speaking of AT gunners, the devs decided that it would be awesome if there was a random 25% chance to kill a 1-4 amount of the crew no matter where you hit the vehicle. The problem with it? Well, if an AT gunner scratches even a corner of your armour (even if it protects nothing), then suddenly half of your crew is dead! Cool is not it? When asked about it, the reply was "Don't care, it is a "feature" https://youtu.be/h3RVi3IluUY Same goes about the guns that are mounted atop of trucks. Imagine a huge flak on a truck, perfectly functional an crewed. Guess what, if you hit the side of the truck itself, for example, a sheet of metal above an empty space, where literally NOTHING is located, someone who is crewing the canon will die! Just randomly, cause you know, "feature" and stuff. Even cooler, if you hit this empty and protecting nothing plate again a couple more times, the whole truck will suddenly BLOW UP, and the crew will refuse to use a perfectly working cannon mounted there...because? You'd guessed it! It is another FEATURE. https://youtu.be/2sxM1s8cxAE I once argued with a DEV for a few freaking days about a broken feature of MGs ricochecting from wooden fences, and instead of fixing it, they kept clowning around talking about Rainbow Six Siege, even when I literally recorded MOWAS2 mg42 destroying wooden fences, so I got tired and made a mod that fixes it which literally took like 2-3 lines of code to get back the feature that was present back in MOWAS2! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN-dxTh-F-c REALISM, my ass. Hell, when confronted about this, do you know what the developers said? "Well, we don't have ants crawling in our game, so here goes the realism". Perfect! https://youtu.be/6Q0aCuU-AyE This game does not deserve the attention it is getting, nor it does not deserve YOU and your money. If you decide to buy it anyways, please just check it for an hour and refund it, it is not worth your time and nerves. Do it in skirmish, because conquest mode is you sitting for 40 minutes destroying dumb AI wave after wave. No lies, literally 44-45 minutes per defense mission, you can not edit it, speedup it or change anything to make it go faster, even if it is just your forces obliterating the enemy the moment units spawn. This game is not worth a single dollar. ESPECIALLY since you have to buy the original CTA, which is also an unfinished and abandoned game (conveniently no longer updated after the release of GoH, but developers claim that it has nothing to do with it, of course)
