Train Simulator is both a game I enjoy and a game I don't really recommend to my friends for a few reasons. The first reason is obvious, Train Simulator has a ridiculous amount of DLC. I mean just mountains and mountains of DLC. Some are made very well and are enjoyable, others... not so much. Some are so lazy that they have missions that are not even possible to complete and achievements that are impossible to get. There is one thing, however, that all the DLC has in common: It is all insanely overpriced, and many of them are overpriced even when on sale. The other thing I really dislike about the game is the graphics. They just really don't cut it, especially when the developers keep relabeling the game every year as if it is a new product. This is a 2009 game, you are a fool if you think there is actually such a thing as "Train Simulator 2021." The gameplay itself is also somewhat lacking. When you boil it down, there really isn't a whole lot to do in the game. Sometimes you just have to sit in front of the computer for two hours until you get to your destination. In other words, if you do not like trains, you will think this is one of the most boring games ever made. Even if you do like trains, this may still be boring to you. The game tries to make itself more interesting with the career scenarios where you get graded for your performances, but the scoring is often frustrating or in many cases even broken. This last grievances with Train Simulator is more of personal preference than an actual problem with the game. There just isn't a whole lot of variety in the content. Most of the DLC is themed of modern day British and American trains, and I personally am not all that crazy about that kind of stuff. Why do they insist on churning out the same kind of stuff all the time when there is literally a whole other world of trains that they have ignored in the decade that this game has existed? China built and operated steam locomotives into the 90s, wouldn't that make interesting DLC? What about Mexican railroads? I mean they used a lot of American equipment that is already in the game so it wouldn't be that hard. They just aren't very creative when they choose what DLC they should make. So, if you bothered reading this far, you are probably wondering why I do recommend this game. Well, it's simply because there isn't anything else quite like it. There is Train Sim World 2, but that doesn't have as much content as this and what little content it does have is pretty much DLC that this game also has. There is also Trainz, but I just don't think the driving aspect of that is as good as in this game. Trainz is better if you want to actually build routes yourself and is more mod friendly. Of course good old Microsoft Train Simulator is still around, but I don't really see that as being better than this game. Is this a good game? Well, not really. Is this the best game of its type? I would say so.

I have had the trains since 2012 and just passed 1000 hours of travel which speaks for itself. Adding to my collection over he years has made the hobby more enjoyable as time goes on I am approaching 83 years of age and keep hoping that a Newcastle to Carlisle will arrive as I was born at a village on that line and it will also complete a circuit via Glasgow and Edinburgh and Newcastle.

3079.3 hours on record....NO, that is not a typo or Bot or anything else. I have actually logged that much time since 2014. Most of which is in the editor creating routes. I am writing today to complain about the current update. Dovetail Games, has just broken the game with this update. They have broken the game for people such as myself who purchase 3rd party content from this very site. Dovetail games has not given any verbal communication as to when or even if this 3rd party content, that they sell as DLC will even be up and running again. STEAM, in my opinion should immediately suspend the Dovetail Games store site on their platform, until these issues are resolved. IMHO, with more than 3000 hours on record, I would not pay for this game in its current state, and I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT PURCHASE ANY DLC until Dovetail games (or their new owners) fix the issues with DLC. Again, I ask STEAM to suspend this store page until they fix the issues involving 3rd party DLC, which they continue to sell, knowing full well that there is unresolved, game breaking issues with the update and the DLC. < EDIT 1 > Still selling DLC with FULL KNOWLEDGE THAT IT DOESN'T WORK... STEAM...For the love of all gamers and simmers out there....HALT ALL SALES FROM THIS STORE UNTIL THEY FIX THEIR STUFF < End EDIT 1>

Preface As some people don't seem to be getting this, the reason why I have "played" this game for 2000 hours is twofold. The first is that I like trains. They're great. This game is a pretty old game and I've owned it since about 2009/2010. I've probably clocked some 3-400 hours of playtime on this, as I have developed my own routes and driven trains up and down the existing routes. That still leaves 1700 hours. This is due to a glitch in the earlier game. It used to leave a process running that I never noticed that told steam that I was still "in-game" even when I was sleeping or out at uni/work. This wasn't patched until very recently. As I said in the earlier part of this review - This used to be a good game. Right up until DTG started doing an EA on us. So, to the people not understanding how I've played it for 2000 hours and I don't recommend it, there's your answer. If I'd reviewed it in the 2010, I would've wholeheartedly recommended it. Oh and it's always good to see some intelligent criticism of this review. Calling me a "douch(sic)" because I don't agree with you isn't going to ameliorate me to your cause. Can we have some maturity please. Review Righty-oh, think I'll jump on the bandwagon. I've owned Railworks (or Rail Simulator, Train Simulator 20xx) since 2010. Back then it was Railworks 2. We forgave it it's shortcomings. It trumped MSTS on features (for the time), was slightly pretty (even if it was behind everything else) but we were still in the warm glow of the community led MSTS days. A time when UKTrainsim flourished with add-ons, and near enough every class of British locomotive, DMU, EMU, DEMU etc was represented. We were expecting the same with Rail Simulator (as it was back then). I remember the posts on UKTrainsim's forums about how there was going to be community support, that if we all cobbled together we could develop our own content and it would be MSTS with a much improved physics and graphics engine. 4 (maybe 7) years on, and oh how things changed. First they took our HUD. That thing was good. Throttle display on one side, brakes and others. It was non-intrusive, fitted well and meant you could happily drive the train from an external view. That went. We tolerated the new HUD. It had more features but it was clunkier and intruded on the display. Uktrainsim published it's expansion packs. Which have remained in pretty much the same form to this day. They were good. A good starting point. They were free which was fantastic. But they were killed away. Railworks was rebranded as Train Simulator. Imagine my (non) surprise when I booted it up and nothing had changed apart from the overlays. It was laggier, and my content didn't work as well. But I forgave it this. They promised patches that never emerged. Instead we got more and more DLC. Trains that no-one wanted. Routes that made no sense. Train Simulators 2012, 2013, 2014 and now 2015 passed and the same base game, but less compatibility. Less focus on community content that didn't feature payware DLC (even on Uktrainsim, the once bastion of free content). The broken features from Rail Simulator remained. The crap dispatcher. The recycled sounds and features. The HST has remained in that form since the first game - update anyone? Finding fixes for relatively minor problems has been a continuous, frustrating and in some cases, fruitless exercise. Especially when it came to content creation. Scenarios that fail for seemingly arbitrary reasons. Non-negotiable (even by mashing G) pathing on freeroam scenarios that will place an express in a 40mph freight loop. The way that the game has two signalling systems for UK routes that don't talk to one another. One that is a pain to set up and one that isn't. In 2011, I started developing a midland mainline route for this game. That went nowhere because we got updated to TS2012 in the middle and I lost the ability to easily edit the route. And to finally ice the cake, with the release of TS2015 and it's subsequent patch, I managed to lose a partition on my hard disk due to a bad file downloaded from Steam. Bye bye 2 years of research. Thank goodness for back ups. If I could say that I have gained anything from TS, it is the following. I am a theoretical chemist. I use the high level software on a supercomputer to compute quantum chemical properties. In many ways, using this is a lot like using the content creator on TS2015. It's broken, and if you don't do it exactly right it will fail, but when it does work, it is the most satisfying feeling in the world. Shame it only happens every few months. People, don't buy this game. Don't buy the add-ons. Leave it alone. Move on to OpenBVE if you want realism, OpenRail if you want features. Oh and DTG, if you want to save this sinking ship, stop trying to monetise everything. Let the community create more non-DLC dependent freeware. Stop selling reskins as separate DLC. Basically, stop treating your (otherwise) loyal fanbase like chumps. We were loyal to begin with, but we will move on to other programs that don't treat us as walking wallets. EDIT: doing more investigation into TS2015. Even more of my DLC doesn't work. And my JT voyager seems to have vanished entirely. Hmm... fishy.

The 2016 update is nothing more than a few graphical tweaks with some DLC smacked on to the game. As of writing, since I got the free 2016 "update," absolutely NOTHING is different, aside from a slightly different splash screen, and the REMOVAL of features such as Sean Bean's fun little intro, and all music in the game. My "upgrade" actually gets me LESS content than the previous version! On top of that, Launch issues plague the system, and it took me 45 minutes of work to get TS2016 to even verify its files and launch. There are no UI changes (flaunted by Dovetail in the promo material), no graphical tweaks, and no more music or Sean Bean. Plus, it's well known that they are moving to a completely new and VERY advanced engine for the next version, so this one is.... pointless really. Save your money. Wait until the next big release. I find this a huge disappointment from Dovetail, and it has me worried about the future of all of the properties they hold.

DLC simulator. -Over 8,000 USD in DLC -Stock game comes with very little -Much of the sound is poorly recorded, as for horns, their loop is complete garbage. One of the most satifying things to do with a train, blow the horn/whistle, and this game ruins it. -clunky dated interface. Unless you buy it for less than 10 USD, Do not buy this game.

idk man it just seems morally wrong to have $10k in DLC Some of the stuff is just straight up broken and abandoned. Soulless cash grab.

As a big fan of train simulators I've played quite a lot. I liked this game at first and actually played it quite a bit but the more I got to know about the game and its interface the more I started to hate it. Driving the train is fine, but everything else I dislike. I hate that I have so few choices of what trains to drive or what routes to use without buying a lot of DLC, I hate that I can't get community routes to even show up 90% of the time. I hate that I get no credit for having completed a career mission because at one point in an hour long play-through I went 51 in a 50 for 2 seconds. I keep trying to find a way to like this game again, to get back to that initial feeling when I first installed it but its just not happening and I find myself just looking at that shortcut on my desktop and getting mad at it. The most important thing: When you put out a fragment of a game, what is essentially a playable demo, and expect your customers to continually pay for DLC in order to get the whole experience then A) I'm not doing that and I'll just uninstall your game, and B) I won't be buying anything else from you either because I just generally don't like how you operate as a business.
