Really fun game. Some achievements are broken and don't unlock for some reason.

I had fond memories of this game when it released and I played it originally on the X360. Decided to play again and 100% the achievements, and it definitely does not hold up. Clunky, repetitive, and kinda boring. Story is told almost entirely through text with only a few cutscenes. The dialogue in these cutscenes aren't always voiced, but sometimes are, strangely enough. A character may say something with audio and the responding character won't be voiced, which makes it very awkward. Also some of the localization is cringe, e.g., "GET IN MUH BELLY!!" Very 2008 moment. The Land of Waves arc was skipped entirely, which is very disappointing since it is one of my top favorite arcs in the Naruto series. There were also some changes to other arcs, such as the Sasuke Retrieval arc in which instead of playing as Choji, Shikamaru, etc against the Sound 4, it's just Naruto vs Kimimaro a couple of times. The changes and exclusions in the story were just disappointing. Completing all the achievements does not require 100%'ing the game. I do not recommend that as it requires the player to play through the game twice for no reason. Each mission must be beat to unlock the bonus conditions to 100% clear the mission. I don't know why they didn't just give the bonus conditions at the start instead. Really just artificial replayability. The mission variety is fine. Fights, tree climbing, chases, hide and seek, cannon rings, etc. Most mission types do get boring just due to how many times the player has to do this, but are interesting enough the first couple times. Fights feel clunky. I try to do an action like chakra dash, but I ended up jumping instead. Try a ninjutsu, but do a regular attack instead. Not sure why trying to do these presses fails sometimes. It's a simple input; chakra and another button. I never failed a chakra infused shuriken input, so I don't know why chakra dashes were so rough to consistently hit. Konoha is mostly an empty sandbox with characters, save points, and stores scattered throughout. Not much to explore here. It might be fun to jump around and get to places faster, but by doing that the player actively makes it harder to achieve 100%'ing all the missions. One of which is "footsteps in the sand," and jumping does not count to total steps traveled for this mission. As I jumped mostly, I am not even remotely close to clearing the A-rank version of that mission, let alone S-rank version. Very counter intuitive to have this footstep mission and then make jumping the go-to method of travel around Konoha. It was also a pain to even get this game started on more than one occasion. Midway through my playthrough, the game defaulted to my integrated graphics rather than my discrete graphics, which rendered the game unplayable due to ~10fps from the integrated graphics. Changing nvidia settings let the game default back to discrete, but why did it even change during my playthrough? No other game has done this. I ended up building a new PC as well 3/4ths through, and Steam would not boot up this game. Trying to opening up the .exe in the local files threw up some missing .dll files which I had to hunt down. Then after upgrading from Win10 to Win11, I had to reinstall the same .dlls. Again, no other game has given me those .dll missing errors. Apparently these are common issues. Side note, some of the SFX are bad. The waterfall during the final arc sounded like a fan blowing into a mic. Very rough stuff. Achievement wise, you will need a 2nd controller and go to free battle to get some of them like "win with a downed strike." Most of them can just be done by playing easily. I am glad there are no multiplayer achievements, as well. Overall, the game just didn't age well. I can't recommend it to non Naruto fans or actual Naruto fans. Only play if you're masochistic and achievement hunt for whatever reason (like me).

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is, obviously, the first game in the Storm saga of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja games. As a fan of the original, 2D Ultimate Ninja games from the PS2 era, the first time I played a Storm game (which was 3), I was surprised by the change in gameplay (since the Storm games are 3D fighters), but I found that game enjoyable. Now that I got to try the first one, what can I say about? Well... I think this one has not aged well. It's not necessarily a bad game, but being the first in the 3D era, you can notice the roughness around the edges. The game features two modes: Ultimate Adventure, where you get to free roam around the Hidden Leaf Village, completing various missions (including Flashback missions, which tell the story of the anime), and Free Battle, where you can fight against the CPU or a friend if you have an extra controller. As I said above, this game is a 3D fighter, although many mechanics from the original Ultimate Ninja games was carried on: the control scheme is pretty similar, you get your regular combos, as well as ninjutsu and Ultimate Jutsu. Now, talking about the Ultimate Adventure mode, I gotta say, it leaves a lot to be desired. Voiced dialogue is pretty minimal, limited to only a few cutscenes during certain Flashback missions, beyond the normal combat voicelines. And speaking of Flashback missions, there's a glaring omission in this game: the Land of Waves arc is completely missing, despite the game covering the entire span of the original, pre-Shippuden anime. That means Zabuza and Haku are also completely absent from the game, despite being some of the most popular characters in the entire anime (and seriously, how can't you not have Zabuza and Haku, come on, the end of that arc is one of the best moments in the anime). Anyway, I digress; beyond that, you get all the other main arcs covered: from the training with Kakashi, to the Chunin exams, the Leaf Destruction, the Search for Tsunade, and the Sasuke Retrieval arc. Now, the missions featured in the game, beyond the expected fights, also include minigames, some for climbing trees, and some for chasing an objective, or reaching a destination, these last two minigames being practically the same. Now, for short minigames they could be fun, but the game sure loves placing a bunch of them during each arc; what's worse, sometimes you'll be going after a companion, and they'll still place traps for you! By the end of the game, I was annoyed with the missions, and what's worse, to get the true ending, you have to completely almost every mission twice, the second time fulfilling extra conditions. The open world roaming, as I said in the second paragraph, is limited to the Hidden Leaf Village, and it reminded me of the similar mode in Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 (noticed I didn't say "Storm", I'm talking about the PS2 game), as after each mission, there'll be hidden scrolls for you to collect around the village, which can then be exchanged for extra support jutsu, which is something I forgot to mention: during fights, you can have up to two companions who can provide support with either ninjutsu or a combo, and you can even summon them to finish certain combos. The character roster, minus the obvious abscense of Zabuza and Haku, is pretty comprehensive; it has pretty much all major characters from the anime, although some of them are relegated to being support only. While it's understandable for characters like the First and Second Hokage, or the team leaders that aren't Kakashi or Guy, the Sound Ninja Four are also support-only, causing some weird continuity issues during the Sasuke Retrieval arc, as Kimimaro single-handedly (ok, with the support of the Sound Ninja Four, although only one at a time) fights Shikamaru's team (plus, Gaara and his siblings only show up to help Rock Lee; guess Temari isn't winning Shikamaru's heart this time around). On the plus side, the "Awakened" versions of certain characters also become available after beating the story, and a couple characters get alternate looks. Graphics wise, well, it looks good enough for its age, although there are a few weird details with some character models, there's nothing particularly bad about it. As for the music, it's good, what you'd expect from a Naruto game if you're familiar with the anime and previous Ultimate Ninja games. To finish this off, even though my review might seem to be overall negative, I must say I quite enjoyed the game, even went for the true ending despite it not being needed for 100% completion. Same goes for completing the collections. The only thing I didn't do, was the "Desperate Successive Battles" mission, as that one was not needed for the true ending, and after doing the boss fights several times (oh, I forgot to mention, you get to fight Gamabunta, the Shukaku, and Manda during the story and in some missions), I didn't feel bothered to do it once more and with even harder QTEs. So yeah, that's not for me, the rest of the game is great, but I'm not doing that. So yeah, do I recommend this game? Absolutely, if you're a Naruto fan, this one can be fun. Just don't expect to see Zabuza or Haku, or to have them even be acknowledged. Harrumph.

For those who have been experiencing fps issues, make sure you are running the game on your dedicated graphics card. * NVIDIA: Step 1: Go to your NVIDIA control panel. Step 2: Go to manage 3D settings. Step 3: Put on the program settings tab and select NARUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM: Under select the preferred graphics processor for this program select High-performance NVIDIA processor. AMD: Step 1: Go to your Radeon Settings Step 2: Go to “Preferences”, then click on "Radeon Additional Settings". Step 3: Under "Power" settings (at the left bar), click "Switchable Graphics Application Settings", Navigate to the NARUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM Directory and select nsuns1.exe. If you played the game recently it should be available on “Recent Applications”. Change the graphics settings to “High Performance”. If your hardware is incapable of delivering 60 fps constantly, then it is recommended to turn off MSAA, FXAA, and reduce the graphics settings. If you are still experiencing slow motion, then you should play the game in 30 fps. To do this simply navigate to the game directory, open “config.ini” and change the fps=1 to fps= 0. *This is applicable to all games including the other Storm series. If this solved your issue, please like it so others can see it.
