The TP-Link Tapo offers decent video quality, and is easy to set up and use. While it doesn't directly support cloud storage or automated panning, it offers a great set of features for the money. If you're after a simple home security camera, or if you want a cheap and flexible indoor IP camera for an existing surveillance setup, the Tapo is hard to beat.

Tapo Home Security Wi-Fi Camera. Tapo is one of the smart home brands from networking giant TP-Link, who we know best for its powerful but eminently affordable Wi-Fi routers and extenders. Like its stablemates, this security camera offers a lot for very little money.

This isn't a totally wireless security camera like the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera, because it still needs a power cable. And unusually, it's not designed around using cloud storage, which means no monthly subscription charge is needed, unlike most of the best security cameras.

To setup and configure the Tp-Link Tapo Camera, you need to use the Tapo mobile app, available for Android and iOS. The app opens to the My Home screen, which shows panels for each Tapo device in your home. Navigation buttons sit on the bottom of the screen: Home, Smart Actions, and Me. The Home button takes you back to the main screen. The Smart Actions button lets you create routines, shortcuts, and automations on compatible devices (again, the Tp-Link Tapo Camera camera doesn't support any of these features). Tap the Me button to update the device's firmware, subscribe to a Tapo Care plan, and access local and cloud recordings.

Tap the camera panel in the My Home screen to launch a live stream from the camera feed. At the bottom of the video panel are buttons for taking a snapshot, manually recording video, muting the speaker, and viewing up to four camera feeds in a split-screen mode. There’s also a button that automatically switches to the full-screen mode.

Beneath the video panel, you get a Pan & Tilt button that launches a round jog dial, a Talk button for two-way audio communication, a Voice Call button that lets you communicate via the camera without having to press and hold the microphone button, a Privacy Mode button that disables streaming and recording, an Alarm button that enables the built-in siren, a Tapo Care button that shows subscription pricing information, and a Playback & Memory button that opens a screen with thumbnails of locally stored video recordings. Finally, at the very bottom of the video screen are thumbnails for video clips in cloud storage. Tap any thumbnail clip to play, download, or delete it.

Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen to access the camera settings. Here, you can enable and configure motion detection and notification settings, turn on motion tracking, create Privacy Zones, invert the image if you need to install the camera upside down, and format the microSD card. A Video Quality setting lets you choose between 2K, 1080p, and 720p resolutions, while a couple of Advanced settings allow you to enable audio recording and calibrate pan and tilt motion.
