About the Game

Prep Less. Play Better.

Fantasy Grounds is known as the most supported virtual tabletop, with more official licenses than any other tabletop of its kind. Now with Fantasy Grounds Unity, we’ve rebuilt from the ground up, so you’ll have access to more amazing features with all the benefits of an upgraded Unity platform.

What is Fantasy Grounds:

Fantasy Grounds is a dynamic system for playing a host of different roleplaying games online. It is used by hundreds of thousands of gamers worldwide to connect and play popular games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, Call of Cthulhu, and so many more. This type of program is commonly referred to as a ‘virtual tabletop’, or VTT, due to their ability to emulate various parts of an RPG session in digital form.

While you can play ANY game on Fantasy Grounds, these available systems allow you to buy preloaded content that is ready to go. Less prep time for the GM means more playtime for the players and a more enjoyable online experience overall.

Even for those wanting to run their games in person, Fantasy Grounds helps keep all your information handy and helps keep the game moving along at a fast pace.

With cross-platform play, Fantasy Grounds users can play with users on Steam or with a mixed group of users on Mac, Windows PC, and Linux platforms across the world and different time zones.

What’s New with Fantasy Grounds Unity:

  • 64-bit support to allow for more content (quality and quantity)

  • Native support for Mac, Linux and Windows PC

  • Network lobby for easy hosting and joining of games (no port forwarding required)

  • Tile based map building with built-in support for dynamic Line of Sight

  • Enhanced Drawing Tools

  • Additional Dice Macros support

  • A new FGU only skin

  • Dynamic Line of Sight with enhanced toggle blockers for walls, doors, terrain and secret areas.

  • Paint with images, such as walls

  • Animated image effects

  • Locally stored Asset Library for use in campaigns

  • Backward compatibility with all existing campaigns and DLC from FGC

The Ultimate license upgrade let's you host Demo players who don't need their own license.

What's included

Standard and Ultimate licenses both contain these items.

  • Combat Battlemaps

Battlemaps for streets, caves, dungeons and tunnels

* - Rulesets provide the understanding for the mechanics of a system, and it allows you to enter data into predefined fields for items, NPCs, characters, etc.

** Data libraries are pre-loaded content packs that provide the data for the ruleset to use.

*** CoreRPG is a generic ruleset that can be used to play any system. It won't have game-specific automation of an officially supported ruleset, a commercial ruleset (purchased as DLC), or a community ruleset (available for free on the forums)

In addition to these features, we are now poised to add even greater functionality going forward. With the Unity platform, we have lots of ideas for new features and this rebuilt engine will make it easier for us to reach those goals and deliver consistent updates for free.

I use it and I dont think its horrible, but my god is this software user unfriendly, its unreal. Cant recommend something that gives me so much trouble, work and agony. I love to play Pen and Paper RPGs. FGU is a good solution to buy something once and gather around strangers or friends to play. As an Ultimate license GM I cant recommend it though. Everything needs to be coded.....even such simple things like themes are a hassle. There is no easy or quick solution to implement the stuff you absolutely need. A background image for a thematic evening is going to make you tear your hair out. - You have a PDF rulebook and want to use it in FGU? Nope, unless you screenshot every single page and clutter together some Frankenstein Image folder. Trying to copy the text and paste it in blocks to FGU? All the text is now misaligned and unreadable. Even the in-app bought rulesets have unreadable text and weird glitches. - Easily implement rules or easy dice strings like - sixes are successes? Nope. Hope there is a mod that includes your favourite ruleset or otherwise its almost impossible or waaaaaay too much work to create one (its coding, like I am coding my own game!!!) Fuck, look at Sophies Dice here on Steam, you can easily set up specific dice rulesets and use them quickly. That is Unity too!!!! - Special dice are almost impossible to implement, want to play Shiver RPG? Cant do, because of the special dice and unique faces. Its easier to set this up in 10min in Tabletop Simulator, where you can import the rulebook PDF as well! - The rulesets you can buy here are so broken, never patched and lackluster. The great artwork that is in these rulebooks is completely butchered here and lost. Plain text only with single img files inbetween....lifeless and an insult to the creators of those books. Often times the FGU version costs more than the rulebook itself.....some systems although present, are in such a low quality its baffling, like in the ALIEN RPG, the map is so low res....it cant be played. - charactersheets are so friggin hard coded its almost impossible to create something workable for anything else besides DnD. MoreCore mod helps, but is also not a great solution, why is it so complicated to include an easy "Create-a-sheet" mode? Why is it not as easy as dropping an img file onto a dice to make a custom dice? - made a complicated map with line of sight and lighting options in a ruleset and tried to export it to another rulesystem....nope! Cant do that, cant export to another dice system! - if the ruleset you wanna use uses cards, like poker cards.....forget it! Only the bought Savage Worlds has a card system, that absolutely sucks and makes no fun. You cant implement your own cards. FGU is almost exclusively designed for DnD. After years of trying to adept and to create stuff for it, I give up. I give up and returned back to Tabletop Simulator.....and oh my god is it so much better! If you plan on to play anything else other than DnD or Pathfinder, forget it!

DRM Nightmare. Like you have to sign up in multiple places. So the a * * hole design goes. (1) Purchase Fantasy Ground from Steam. (2) Sign up for a Compulsory account through FantasyGrounds.com (3) Get a Key from Steam to put into the FantasyGround launcher (4) THEN you have to link the your steam account through FantasyGround. Enjoy the suckage because you cant access the content you paid for. Seriously, I can't access 30 modules. Some person told me how to "access my" paid for content. You can't not with out a monthly subscription. So I have to pay a monthly subscription to access the stuff I bought and paid for. Just going to call a turd what a turd is.

If you buy this buy it through their website not here.. I spent quite a bit of money on this and the automation was not quite as fleshed out as one would hope. So many things that you have to code yourself or purchase extensions to do it for you. It is nice once you get the hang of it but it is by no means effortless. I have spent 28 hours in this program so far and at around hour 13 i wanted a refund. Steam wont refund this so im married to it. I dedicated more time and i feel like im getting a grasp on everything that i need to run a campaign with i hope to be minimal hiccups and pauses to fix stuff. I am still not all that happy with it but the program itself is rather nice but you have to get a masters degree from fantasy grounds academy to actually run a successful game. Features like lighting and line of site are really nice and what it does automate it does it well. You should only buy this if you have hours upon hours to dedicate to learning the system and how to use it with your chosen tabletop game and also have players that are willing learn as well. It is way to easy for a player to destroy their character on accident to the point where they have to make a new one because you cant fix it lol. Hope this helps.

If you can buy it on sale, it's the most cost effective option for VTT. The published campaigns are normally $15-20 less than Roll20. The modules go on sale for even less during the steam seasonal sales. One of the best things about Fantasy grounds unity is that it is backwards compatible with all the original fantasy grounds content which is a massive catalog. A lot of the modules are free and you can find a ton of self published modules on the fantasy grounds forge. I would highly recommend the free modules that are popular as most of them are made to handle 5e mechanics that aren't programmed in the vanilla version. Also you can use it offline. When running campaigns for my local hobby shop, I run two instances: one as GM, and a second as a player which I display on a widescreen TV with dry-erase Plexiglas over the top. It allows the players to enjoy using their miniatures, without me having to spend money on a bunch of miniatures.

I heartily recommend Fantasy Grounds. It is the best and most powerful Virtual Tabletop in production today, and I am a proud supporter and user. However, there are some unsettling things happening in the industry right now, and VTTs are in danger of becoming obsolete. I'm a Dungeon Master, and I have been looking long and hard at publishing my own intellectual property and my own supplements for a game that has been open source for the last 22 years. Open source means that no one has the right to it, and everyone can benefit from it. It has taken me years of research, rote memorization, musing, and digging deep and hard into myself to perfect a craft that I have come to love. I love it because it is one of the best mediums of self-expression that there is, and because it can be a deeply intimate and spiritual experience with people who you care about in a story where people overcome their problems and good overcomes evil. Now a greedy corporation called Wizards of the Coast wants to update this Open Gaming License to flip the tables. This new agreement would require me and all content creators who use any part of their system, or anything too similar to it, to pay huge royalties and sign away the rights to their intellectual property. Any custom characters, places, nations, cultures, entire campaign settings written for such a system and marketed as compatible could be taken and reprinted, redistributed, and resold without paying the author a single penny. And to add insult to injury, this new agreement allows Wizards of the Coast to terminate the license at any time, yet they retain all rights to the author's intellectual property. Finally, the previous Open Gaming License is terminated, and any content made under it is retroactively brought under the umbrella of this new license. And that means that Wizards of the Coast owns most of the intellectual property in the Tabletop Roleplaying Game industry, because Dungeons and Dragons is the biggest game in that sphere by far. Even worse, it means they can terminate the sale of competitive product lines by terminating the license that the product is built upon. This is a grab for a monopoly, make no mistake. Wizards of the Coast may legally have the right to do this because of how the original Open Gaming License was worded, but it was not the intended spirit of that document. Any nerds reading this post, I call upon you to vote with your dollars and exercise your right to boycott Wizards of the Coast if they confirm and enforce the new OGL that is now in circulation as it is presently. It is an unacceptable change in the structure of the hobby, and it will lead us down a path of exclusive microtransactions, skins, proprietary virtual tabletops, and phasing out the tradition of pen and paper over playing from a phone. To allow this to happen will irrevocably damage the gaming community. Don't go down this path with them. If you have any sympathy for the countless artists who earn their livelihood from this industry, please leave a like and share this post, and then head down to this link and sign the petition: https://www.opendnd.games/ Thank you for reading, and may you have success in every check.

Imagine owning a VTT on steam, and having none of the licensing for that software mattering unless you interact with a 3rd party website that actually has nothing to do with the owning of said software in any meaningful way at all aside from it being used as a cloud authenticating tool for a company who apparently can't be F***ed to just have their content ON STEAM. Why even sell the tool on steam IF IT ISNT ACTUALLY ON STEAM YOU ABSOLUTE DEGENERATE APES. Now imagine you buy content for said VTT. DLC that is sold on steam as a module for this tool that is blatantly on your PC via steam. That you purchased via steam. And that you were sold said DLC for on steam. Then imagine that none of that DLC content is immediately accessible for this product that you have on your pc ON STEAM, VIA STEAM, AND SOLD ON STEAM. Because you in fact have to link your steam account to this 3rd party authenticating cloud website that serves absolutely no purpose outside of complicating your end user experience. But now imagine that up until the point where you have purchased this content, you have NEVER ONCE had to EVER do this for anything else involving said VTT, and never has it been described or explained anywhere in that VTT or in the forums for said VTT that you would ever need to do this in order to access your content that you purchased and own completely devoid of anything to do with this stupid pos website that again serves no purpose outside of complicating your end user experience. This system needs fixing. Desperately. Devs need to stop trying to interject their worthless 3rd party system into an already existing platform that they insist on doing business on. If you want to sell me content on STEAM then let me use STEAM TO ACCESS THE CONTENT THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN MY MONEY FOR.

Why did I start using this app and why did I play 150+ hours? Because no one has ever done anything better. If you're hoping to switch from one platform to another in the hope that something will change, face it, it's never going to happen. This game will only suck your money, nerves and desire to keep your company. Why not to buy and play FGU? 1) The game is made by crooked developers who clearly create this "creation" by a small companion. Everything works very crooked, more complex projects lag, the game consistently crashes 7 times per session, difficulty connecting, control, terrible design and more. If I had the choice to buy Ultimates for my companies here, I wouldn't make that mistake a second time. Remember, never, EVER buy this crap!!! 2) The entry threshold is incredibly high, so incredible that in the beginning I had to sit on FORUMS, CARL, FORUMS to understand how this piece of shit works, but because of my huge desire to host online companies with my friends I had to put up with it. But let me tell you this, if you're a DM and decided to spend your company in this crap, count on spending 200+ dollars for all the content or you can just add everything yourself and spend about 300+ hours on it, the whole interface is ABSOLUTELY un-userfriendly, after a while you get the impression that the hardest thing in your company for players to understand what to click. AND WE'VE BEEN PLAYING FOR MONTHS AND STILL KILL HOURS SEARCHING FOR ALL SORTS OF CRAP. 3) Paid content. PAY ALL!!! We are going to introduce a cool thing with sounds (done as horribly as the whole FGU), then first buy for 10 dollars pack with sounds, and then another 10 to subscribe to a web app, which works like a piece of shit, plus it will not always work, sometimes the sounds you bought just will not play, everything will lag furiously. 4) Windows. Character window, monster window, krata window, window window window, window window window and no way to switch between them normally. Sometimes I had the impression that they wanted to confuse me, there is no logical manager okono not and will not, and if they make it, it will lag and because of it all will fly out. 5) The funny thing is, I found that it is more profitable to run online companies, if you open some online blackboard and draw a map there, and all the important information is stored in the excel file, and the dice can be thrown just on the camera. Yes, I spent 200+ dollars to end up playing on a school google board, set the information in excel (which is 1000 times more convenient than through FGU) and throw a regular cube on the camera. Thanks for reading, but I advise the developers to delete all their work and re-write the whole game using Atom, because what you're doing - a complete ... And you, the man who wants to buy a FGU I advise to think a hundred times!!!!!!!!!!

Absolute terrible time finding the license key. The software is fine but golly was that process really necessary? You buy it and then download it and it doens't give you the license key so you cant use the product. You have to to to your library, right click on the Fantasy grounds unity game name, go to manage, CD keys, and then!!! then you will see your license key. You have to copy that and then start and play the game. Then go to the settings tab/button on the opening page, paste that license key into the key section and then log in. Like why?!!!!! Why was that so freaking complicated? Do i recommend this product? Yes, the software is awesome. But golly setting it up was a nightmare!!!! Absolute nightmare!

Bad software design due to people who are not programmers making programming decisions, the outcome of which is not following webstandards, selling huge amounts of non standard assets, adopting webstandards and then reselling all the assets again. And the customer care doesnt exist, comprised of brown nosing forum slugs attacking any one who is honest about this pile of dog shit. Worst 350 dollars I have ever spent. Do not buy.
