  This is the best horror game I have ever played. I can say that confidently after having played for four hours, getting to probably the easiest (but not happy) ending. I want to play more, I want to see what lies even lower in the dungeon. That being said, I want to address the content warning attached to this game. Do not take the warning lightly. Fear and Hunger deals with themes of bodily mutilation, child violence, substance abuse, cannibalism, sexual assault, murder, and suicide. There may be more subjects touched on in the game, but that is what I can remember at the moment. Fear & Hunger is so terrifying because it deals with the subjects mentioned above, and utilizes game play that is unforgiving, unfair and often does not care for the agency of the player. Again, I want to reiterate that this is the best horror game I have ever played, but it is really not for everyone. Approach ahead with caution.

And then that corpse will walk and speak again with me. [h1]I know of the 1st secret of Sylvian:[/h1] If I sprinkle my seed inside the womb of a freshly deceased, the life that is left lingering in that corpse will sprout a son in my name. A son that will a life of violence. [h1]I know of the 2nd secret of Gro-goroth:[/h1] The miniscule world I have always felt curiosity for, becomes understandable to me. I am finally able to converse with the insects around me and have them reveal their deepest secrets. [h1]I know of the 2nd secret of Sylvian:[/h1] I no longer have to fear for separation from my loved ones, for we can forever join in a marriage of flesh. An act of love that creates a beautiful unison for two souls. [h1]I know of the 3rd secret of Gro-goroth:[/h1] For all the wrong that they have done to me, I can merely point my finger and leash out the violence at them in their desperate cry of remorse. [h1]I know of the 3rd secret of Sylvian:[/h1] As human beings are simple creatures guided by their feelings and lust, I can easily control their affections in a most primal of ways.

  Be prepared for a wild ride because the main theme of this game is: "Oh sh*t, so it can get even darker". This game is the peak of "fair in unfairness" game design. The RNG doesn't matter that much despite what some people may say, one of the 4 playable characters starts the game with late game armor and almost every good weapon is located in a predestined location. You see - the real progress you achive in this game isn't the loot nor the abilities, its the "unique experience" and trauma you got along the way and naturally the knowledge to avoid it that comes with it. Still tho, unless you are a veteran you can lose this game in character creation: Dash skill is so essential that not picking it may change the nature of this game horror from eldritch one to existential and greatly reduce the quality of the following experience. 10/10 Would accidentally discover what happens when you use "fetus" item once again.

  This is honestly the single most remarkable game I've played - and that's saying something. It is rare that I write a review after 1.5 hours of game play, but I feel in this case it is warranted. Here we go... (1) Fear & Hunger is the darkest dark fantasy title I've encountered in a long time. When I finally got around to playing Dark Souls 3, I was captivated with feeling of depression and darkness created. Fear & Hunger provides this same darkness but does it 10 times better. Horrific gore and nudity, slow movement speed, and limited view area creates a distinctly terrifying experience. On top of that, the story is ridiculously well put together for a small title - especially a dark-fantasy one. (2) Fear & Hunger has ludicrously simple mechanics. As I alluded to above, the movement and interface of this game is incredibly minimal. There are basically 6 buttons to press: movement arrows, space bar, and escape key. To supplement this, your movement speed (even when your legs are attached) is a snails pace. But surprisingly, within these simple mechanics, they manage to insert an impressive J-RPG turn based attack mechanic. Thus relatively trivial combat never seems boring. (3) This game is somehow a fun RNG. Looking through the current reviews on this game, I see this element addressed a lot. At various points, the game will force you to flip a coin and pick heads or tails. In a couple situations a wrong pick will lead to instant death. This is indescribably annoying. Yet somehow, it enhances the experience. As mentioned above, atmosphere is this games major strong point. I'm not sure how they did it, but the developer(s) have managed to effectively complement the atmosphere of dread by adding a central, blatant, and completely unforgiving coin flip mechanic. This game is truly something else - this is evident after a mere 90 minutes of gameplay. I, like you, was skeptical even after reading glowing reviews. I can only hope that this review has illustrated how intriguing this game is. Without a doubt, Fear & Hunger is worth your time.

  If you think its inherently bad for a game to be unfair, uncomfortable and obtuse then Fear & Hunger isn't for you. Fear & Hunger has endings but beating it isn't the point. Fear & Hunger is trying to victimize you. If you can open yourself up to it then it will reward you with a unique takes on both survival and eldritch horror.
