*Fair Warning: this game is not for people wanting a casual experience.* Overhead tactical RTS/Rougelike strategy game developed by the man, the myth, the legend, URB - this is a game that'll push you to your limits and give you exactly no sympathy when doing so. Hell - sometimes even your absolute best won't be enough - but that's what the next match is for! Tell you guys where to go and try to keep your cool as the odds are stacked overwhelmingly against you against an enemy that has absolutely no qualms with putting all six of your dudes six feet under as fast and as dirtily as they possibly can! Good game to play if you like getting your ass blasted... off! It's a work of love by the developer and community alike - good game, would recommend! (Don't mind the playtime, been playing the demo too, also been following the game's development for a while now haha)
But it definitely needs more McDonald's apple pies and sarge
If you remember the browser version, this release is somewhat like it. A few features have been changed, I'll list the major ones I noticed. - In the original, the action moved from the bottom of the screen to the top, with the enemy mostly approaching from the top. This version goes left to right, with the enemy on the right. Moving forward is applied more fluidly. - As far as I can remember, in the original the player had the option to purchase specialized troops such as snipers and gunners with command points. In this version, not only are you not able to do that, you must upgrade leveled up standard troops to those specializations. You are also only allowed your starting 6 soldiers, you may replace them as they die, but never more than 6 foot soldiers. I can see how this can frustrate old timers but also how it can add to the brutality and unfairness that was a hallmark of the original. There is a campaign mode that I have not touched yet, so I cannot speak to it, I've played about 3 rounds of classic and even if I only play 3-5 more, the purchase would be worth it just to hack at the new mechanics and get my mud and blood nostalgia dopamine hit.

Been playing this since I was kid so I'm biased. It would be great if the classic mode still works like the old version where you can have a ton of men and watch them get vaporized randomly. I'm pretty sure everyone else who played the older version knows Sarge... you can only have one at a time and the fact that he's smoking during battle is just perfect. Bring him back and a piece of my childhood will be completed. Either way, thank you for the masterpiece you have provided us with.

Hey boys here's a legendary flash game I used to play back in the olden days when I had dial up internet. Game was fire then and still is now.

I like the aspect of leading six men through a side scrolling battle, but the classic mode is not how I was hoping it'd be. If you are entering to enjoy the experience of Mud and Blood where you build up an army and push into enemy territory, I would not recommend buying it right now. You are limited to Six Soldiers, any Vehicles you can get, linger behind your lines and never hit the targets you request them for, they also go away at the worst of times. The content from upgrading your six soldiers is fun and all, but I miss being able to build up my armies. Difficulty scaling is also painful, you could have the cheesiest build of troops and you wont loose to a hard counter, you'll lose to German troops deciding that they are gonna one shot your troops, resist every shot your guns do, even if its a maxed out sniper scout machine gun combo, and deal half their health while behind a concrete bunker in their first bullet. Plus if you think you can push through classic with your troops, if you manage to reach the end of classic they just shoot you off map, there's no second map loading. If anything I am hoping they bring back some of the classic RTS features they had before.

The magic is all here. It satisfies like MnB2 but with all the quality of life improvements you wished it could have had. God it's so brutal. You fall in love with your troops leveling them up mission after mission only to have the Germans scatter their guts across your screen with as much concern for your feelings as it would squashing an insect. The AI is savage. It has much the same tools available to it as you do. It is a cold heartless killer. It doesn't want you to win. It doesn't want you to have fun. It wants to kill you and you can FEEL it. I have been playing games for a very long time. I've seen it all. There's very little novelty left. It often feels like nothing can hook me anymore, I rarely feel anything playing games anymore. But this game is FRESH. It has me intensely feeling things other games can barely evoke in me at all anymore. When my men are dropping left and right, and somehow I get a few guys to last a few patrols, I emotionally invest in them like they're my children. When I send them into a difficult situation I worry. When one gets hit I get very concerned. When the tactical situation all of a sudden goes tits up and I have to react quickly to save lives, my adrenaline surges. When I get all my men across the line I feel real accomplishment. When the Germans wipe my squad the despair is real. And every time I limp what's left of my shredded squad home in retreat I just want to go back in for more. This game elicits feelings I didn't think I could feel playing video games anymore. 29th let's go!

I just don't think the same set of design decisions work for both a wave defense game and a side-scrolling rts with objectives. An unfair, overwhelmingly difficult game makes sense when you're supposed to lose (i.e., a wave defense game as it was back in the flash days and today, in the classic mode) but not when you're supposed to win (the campaign). There are moments when it still works, as it did way back when, but I find they're few and too far between to hold my interest as MnB2 did. Hopefully this changes. The community is still coalescing around this (as I write this the community wiki is down), and obviously this is basically an open beta. But I do think the campaign in particular needs some real rebalancing.

Sunk so many hours into the flash version of this game for no discernable reason other than to get those nice little ribbons. Love it

This game is hard and straight unfair. SS Troops with Sniper G43s on day one? likely at least one. PAK guns sniping and gibbing my medic halfway across the field? Happened a couple of times. Rolling a minefield event and your engineer dies to *something* that tears him in half from full health instantly? Yep. *Getting to finally have a good squad and getting several days ahead about 1/3 into the campaign only to get instantly wiped by airburst artillery without any flare or warning or callout? You better fucking believe I reset my campaign out of rage* But it's only a game, you can try again and again and again as many times as you want. And with experience you'll learn that it's far better to be safe than sorry. Embrace the paranoia, PTSD-esque horror of hearing whistles, the tears of rage at how unfair it is how you had time now how it was all going so well. The harder a task is the more seratonin and joy you feel at accomplishing it. But this just leaves you feeling exhausted and dreading the next field, the next push, the next man who will die. And as a war game, I think that speaks to the incredible capacity for realism in the mood it puts you in. I think this is one of the most authentic and realistic WWII games ever made. Because while other games try to make you feel like a hero or have fun, Mud And Blood embraces and shows you the Truth. In War there are no heroes, and war is not fun.
