  Usually games that have minimal interfaces/HUDs are due to lazy developers or just someone looking for a quick buck. Hydroneer is the first game I've played with absolutely no HUD (which also means no inventory) but it feels right. Yeah, you'll do a lot of running around, but you'll soon adapt to using buckets, pallets, and vehicles to move goods around instead of some magical unlimited inventory. It starts off very slow and a bit repetitive, but getting used to the mechanics is essential. After a couple hours you can afford to build some pipes that can fill up 6+ pans at one time, greatly streamlining the process. Do that for another couple hours and you can afford your first plot of land and some machinery. Start digging, because the deeper you go, the more money you make. The game is extremely addicting once you "get it", and I almost refunded it, then I played 30 hours in the span of 5 days. Now the endgame is pretty lacking - once you go 4 goliaths/D.A.V.I.D.s, you make more money than you can spend. I feel like that's where the real early access begins since there's not much point in getting bigger. Games that are even slightly similar (Dyson Sphere Program, Satisfactory, Factorio, etc.) you always had bigger and better things to work towards - Hydroneer is lacking in that progression. But this is after 30 hours of very addictive gameplay. So I highly recommend it; for ten bucks, 30 hours is a good price and the developer is very active, so there's a bright future for it as well.

  Aside from enjoying this game immensely, and now being able to enjoy it alongside my child, the 2.0 release happening at the same time as LEGO The Skywalker Saga has made me think: Hydroneer's tiny dev team may have not been able to deliver "full" multiplayer, but they have been honest and upfront about this and keep in constant contact with their players. Meanwhile WB Games and TT Games massive dev team dropped features at the last minute that they had previously promised, released a heavily bugged game and haven't patched or communicated with their players for weeks. I know which I prefer - which is why Hydroneer gets thumbs up from me. Remember, a thumbs up for a developer that has the respect to update their community, despite their trials is a thumbs up for good dev-player relationships.

  For a game that rewards working at depth it is a remarkably shallow experience. (I am sorry. I had to) My first few hours with this game I was sold. Its a cute game about mining and automating your way out of a somewhat tedious process until money is just rolling in. But honestly I am not sure it is right to call it a game. It is a sand box. I was excited as I transitioned from a bucket and broom to machinery and from hand sorting and smelting to automating, and I was excited to see how much deeper it goes. I put together a pretty basic setup with a single belt fed by a couple drills dropping into the harvester, a gem polisher, and the 7 splitters to drop each resource into a pale or auto-smelter. It worked great. time to set up auto crafting or something. Except that doesnt exist. I quickly found out that my super basic first build is about as good as it gets. I can drop more drills in line, increase water pressure, and optimize distance between drill and source, but thats it. I had basically exhausted the progression in mining. Fine I have tons of money now lets go spend it! There has to be some awesome stuff to get with these hundreds of thousands of coins right? I can get a shiny chair and build a house that has no purpose. Seriously. I hit the end of this game before I finished my first build on my first mine. I opened up another mine and went through the process of loading my car with just enough stuff that it wouldn't take off into the atmosphere and spent hours digging out a nice cave and set up the same exact rig for higher numbers that I dont need on resources that have no use. No new resources, no new crafting, no meaningful purchases and no point to any of it. You might say the point is to optimize and find the best way to set everything up except that the best way is essentially the only way. If your rig works, its about as good as it gets. Hydroneer has a lot going for it, but it lacks purpose and direction, depth and reward. Oh and a ton of optimization and bug fixing. My played hours are vastly inflated by my save randomly corrupting, i lost a truck into the sky, crashes aren't uncommon, and lag is a real problem even at a pretty small scale. It can get there, but this is a top tier demo right now, or a shallow sand box, not a game ready for release.

  I'm being kind giving this game a recommendation: By all means, I like it, I like the GFX style, the mechanics, not noticed much bugs, I want more of it. The real problem is there ain't more of it. I'm a sandbox fan, I definitely get that there don't need to be a "point" to the things you do, but unfortunately Hydroneer takes this a little to far, to be engaging for very long. It lacks any meaningful progression, there is basically 2,5 tiers: You start with handheld buckets and simple stuff like that. Then once you've brushed a few lumps of dirt in your bucket and sold the yield, you get som T1 machines and start to automate. At this point money is the only currency that matters, and you can get absolutely everything in the game with money, except T2 drills/harvesters. Pretty quickly though you have a million times more money then you need for anything, and the only thing holding you back from Those T2 drills is having gathered enough of a semi rare ore. So what I'm getting at here is that once you start to automate, you have access to basically everything, there is no progression, or things to unlock, or any reason to continue other then getting those T2 drills. And then if you do get those T2 drills, they stil just gives you the same resources as the T1, and arguably less efficiently. So the chain of unlocking things, getting any kind of rewards for your efforts, are 2-2,5 steps long, - halfway trough taht you're richer then god and just waiting for that 1 ore, that you require for absolutely no purpose other then building more of the same. That's the main flaw of this game in it's current state (2.0), and that's why I was hesitant to give it an upvote. I ended up giving an upvote, because mechanically and aesthetically I love it and want more of it, and as it is either a single dev or very small team, I would like to support them in making more out of this.
