TL;DR: rough around the edges, solid colony builder. Know what you're getting into before buying. It really does feel like Banished+. And if the game continues to improve going forwards towards full-release, it will be a great colony builder/logistics game. At the moment the facet of the game I find most irritating is logistics. And the problem is extraordinarily worse on the harder difficulties. Specifically: I've noticed that citizens will spend the better part of an entire season getting food or medicine for a single-use -_- This issue could be resolved if homes also stored a small amount of food and medicine supplies (similar to the way they do for fuel) - and citizens refrained from making longer trips to replenish their own needs rather than trips to replenish the stock in their homes. I've played almost exclusively on Deity difficulty (the hardest) and I swear there are some avenues of food production that don't even fulfil the food requirements of those who work there. Feedback: - Fishing seems particularly awful in food, per worker, per time. - Fruit gathering not much better, especially when taking into consideration the ranch-sized orchards and doubled workforce, compared to them. - Farms feel really inconsistent. You can slap housing down right next to them, and have them near a trade post/port with significant storage, and the worker will still find a way to be miles away come autumn and miss out on harvesting most or all of the crop before winter comes - I would love to see a 'realistic' difficulty setting that had moderate-to-high consumption penalties (less than the highest, probably), considerably slowed down the ageing of colonists, extended the duration of seasons, in general just slowed down the game. a lot. - (unsure if this is already how it works) Luxuries should have dynamic consumption rates i.e. furniture, jewelry, pottery, books should all be 'consumed' far far slower than the consumable or perishable luxuries like flowers, alcohol, cannabis, etc. The production rates/cost of luxuries could/should/would then need to be rebalanced against their respective consumption speeds and labour cost. - more comprehensive descriptions on the purposes of buildings(i.e. 'beer' breweries can also brew cider and other alcohols other than wheat beer, despite the description very specifically stating it brews beer from wheat.) and their production/consumption rates. - (also unsure if already how it works) variable nutrition values for foods. Some foods replenish more food need than others. A loaf of bread should be worth more food replenishment than a single orange.

One of the best city builder/strategy games I have ever played. It's not perfect, but it is in early access and content is being worked on as we speak. It has everything you want from the city building components of Banished, to the territory expansion and open-world over-world of the Civilization series. What I like about Kingdoms Reborn over Civilization is that you can customize each city personally and up-close, which in Civilization, I was left always wanting more customization options and wanting to really see the liveliness of my cities. The combat is still very new in Kingdoms Reborn and may eventually change, but I don't dislike it currently. It reminds me of Europa Universalis or Tropico in the way your units fight against the opposing units in a simulation, where number of troops and which kind of troops matter, whereas it is unalike Total War, where you fend off a much larger enemy using tactics and moving each unit around a battlefield. What I like most about this game is that it feels like such a great balance of "I'm feeling relaxed and enjoying myself here with minimal stress" and "this game is challenging and I need to learn how to improve." After entering a map seed and creating a randomly generated map, you can pick where your starting city is and you can choose to be as far or as close to other cities as you like. Start far and just peacefully build your city, or maybe build close and try annexing territory from other players or forcing them to be your vassal. Maybe if you start far at first, build your second city a bit closer to the action. Up to you! There are luxury goods, not much different than in the Civilization games. Where certain tiles, or territories, have a special item (i.e. Dye, Cocoa, Gemstones, Grapes, etc.) to harvest. These items, once your citizens have them within their households, it boosts their happiness and helps you advance further down the tech tree. I highly recommend this game. I love what it is so far, I love where it's going. I'm having a blast playing multiplayer with my siblings and girlfriend. I've spent some time in single player trying out the Emirates faction. I'm so excited to see what's next, and in the mean time, I'm enjoying my time with Kingdoms Reborn immensely.

Kingdoms Reborn is a game that has two faces. One face is peaceful single player and the other face is the maniacal multiplayer or later in a campaign. Buy this city builder if you want to relax. It's akin to listening to the birds chirp on a perfect spring day, just watching time pass by, not a care in the world. It can be the city builder equivalent of birdwatching. Then a few hours later you can buy military units and you start unlocking cards that steal your opponent's population and laugh maniacally as you become a monopolistic overlord of the world board as your lands encroach upon one another's and your opponents lie in destitute ruin. This game has a deckbuilding mechanic akin to a game called Spellcaster University. Eerily similar, in fact. If there is a genre for this type of game, I would like to know what it is. I like the mechanics of this game far more than SU, however. You have more agency for choice. The deckbuilding is such: You can build any number of basic tier buildings (e.g. houses, roads, etc.) and those do not require a card. However, in order to build production buildings such as a pottery, brewery, or forester, you must have a card in your hand. You can select a card at random from a randomly generated set and may purchase one every time a timer counts down. If you choose not to, your 'picks' build up over time and you may do the selection process multiple times. If you let it build up five times, you get a 'Wild card' that lets you select any type of building yourself. This is where Kingdoms Reborn excels in the mechanics department. You can also purchase any newly unlocked card on the tech tree for the fee it would have cost you once you finish your research, nullifying fate entirely. For the duplicates, you can leave it to chance and get lucky (or get some better cards too) or you can let your Wild cards build up, the choice is yours. I took the lazy route on an easy difficulty and watched as my small village became more prosperous through trading over time. The game does not push you or urge you, with AI players able to spawn across the map. Alternatively, you may play in multiplayer and use special cards to Steal resources among other things (also available in single player) and be a total jerk to your friends/foes. The game has several difficulty levels so the main single-player aspect (that will remain unchanged whether you're playing with friends or the computer) can be toughened up a few levels if you so choose, for a more Banished-like experience. It all comes down to if you can cope with not being able to decorate and lay out your towns exactly how you want them and are okay with leaving it somewhat up to fate. That said, I ended up with a very large, very lovely, and very well-planned-out kingdom once I got the hang of this game. It's fun to sink in hours at night into building a small village up to a grand metropolis which then runs out of coal in the winter and people get cold, crops start to wither leaving no more food for them all the while houses crash and your medicinal plant fields have no one to farm them since they died from hunger, slowly leaving the sprawling metropolis into an empty ghost town.

Context There was an update that made the game unplayable, which lead me to leave a "not recommended" review, but the game has since been fixed. Updated Review: Short Version: For a genre (colony sims) I'm pretty picky about. It has some flaws that are to be expected for a an EA game but the overall gameplay is great. Impressive balance between city builder and a survival sim. If you enjoy the designing and building for longevity aspect this game will do that. If you like resource management and survival games, this game will certainly have that too. It's very difficult for games to get a balance without it becoming just a survival sim where you are always in emergency mode and too limited to design for efficiency, and more engaging that city builders that get boring since you just have all the money and resources in the world. Honestly I've been looking for something that does this balance well and it's a bit early to say, but this might be the best. There are some aspects that aren't as polished as other games, but it's EA and it's worth it for the way it keeps you engaged in the game. At time of my initial review I didn't realize the update was released the day before, just had seen others reviews mentioned it had effected the game, and part of my review was assuming it had been that way for longer than a day or so. The fact that they've worked on the bugs so quickly is very appreciated. Huge props to the dev who fixed it immediately, which is very promising. The long version: In case other's are as picky as I am, these are some of the pros/cons and things the game could work on that are a bit more personal preference and not negatively effecting the game. PROS: - It relies on a mechanic in which you are given a limited set of options of which building you want to build each cycle, which is independent of the unlocked building. This adds a strategy and more "game" like element that some of the city builders lack. It has some other considerations that colony sims don't always consider such as appeal of location/negative impact from industry, etc. Overall just great for adding some constraints without it being too be railroaded. - The technology and upgrade trees are pretty far developed. I haven't unlocked everything but it definitely seems to promise a very long game and growth. The progress is fairly well balanced for the most part. - The supply chains are pretty logical. Settlement Survival is another similar game which has weird supply chains that get too illogical and costly. The unlocking of new buildings and new tech comes with appropriate material generators or are things you'd have already which is helpful. The pacing of new chains or growth is also appropriate for the colony growth - The population growth system is great. You can add immigration offices to increase new people if you need a quick burst, or you can turn them off and rely on reproduction. Once you get the basic up and running, it really lets you control how quickly you grow and you're not stuck too long waiting on population. - there are some QoL tools that I really enjoy. The farmers automatically stop working when it's off season and find other employment. The side bar with key stats is easy to reference without it being congested. The easy demolition instead of waiting for workers to do it, really makes it good for long haul growth. CONS Priority System: - the priority system really needs work, but EA, so I'm not too bothered it's not perfect. The global system requires clicks for each individual shift up/down which can get tedious when you have more types of buildings. The individual priority of buildings is selected by cycling which can also be tedious if you're trying to go into emergency mode and shutting off all non-essentials. The UI can use some work, either in the side panel that comes with each building and then a global priority value setting like Oxygen Not Included. Builders: - Builders/Laborers also needed to be sorted in priority list with all other jobs. they seem to fill minimum after filling priority job sites, and after minimum laborers are met so they're lacking at times. The priority of constructions is helpful but not if there aren't builders. Also would like to see what they're working on, either with tracking or just on the town hall shows what employees are doing. I will have priority constructions that are not being built, but have all the resources at site and having builders employed, so I'd like to know if there's something else they're working on or if it's not working. Wood supply: - the wood demand/supply is not balanced well (in normal mode.) Most everything needs wood for construction but even if I start on wooded area, gather it all, there's not enough. The foresters don't supply as quickly as they deplete. I'm assuming they wait for tree growth but it makes early game very difficult for trying to get started, especially with winter upcoming since almost certainly your population will be diminished to <5. The trees need to grow faster or each tree needs to offer more material. I'd also like to see a dedicated tree farm that runs more efficiently than the forester (possibly exists late game that I missed) Upgrading Houses: - Upgrading is only reliant on luxury goods which can be difficult to obtain early game depending on location or limited money. Would like to see other ways to upgrade housing, maybe happiness or at a cost of materials if luxury goods are unavailable. This also locks the era upgrade since money/goods also rely on needing some of those upgrades depending on your starting materials. SUGGESTIONS - more thorough mortality stats: there are small text notifications about why someone died but seeing overall stats about how many people are dying to what to better see what needs to be prioritized - building stats: the fact that they look unique enough to keep track of what you have for the most part but some get lost in the houses (gatherer's hut, hunter's hut) which would be nice to have them be more distinct. Seeing how many of each building I have, the production of building types, and material consumption would be very nice. - art: the art in the title/loading screens, the icons and portraits are great. They're very different from the art style of the actual game though. Of course it wouldn't be as high res or anything but the style itself seems discontinuous. It looks a bit dated and the UI doesn't help. It's all very functional and it's not offensive by any means (even as someone who's stopped playing game because the style is so bad,) but given the game is partly design and building, I'd like to appreciate the city I'm building a bit more.

I found Kingdoms Reborn to be a very engaging and aesthetically pleasant Colony/Civilization builder. It is very reminiscent of other games such as "Civilization 5", "Banished" and "Kingdoms and Castles"and maybe even "Rimworld". the game will begin by opening to a generated map like in Civilization 5 and Rimworld at which you will have to pick a starting location taking into consideration the geography and nearby resources both "luxury" and "strategic". The beginning of the game plays a lot like Rimworld and Banished as a colony builder; but as you grow and expand you will be given the choice of researching technologies, milestone bonuses, and policy cards that help to personalize your colony/kingdom. I say colony/kingdom because as you grow and the game progresses the Civilization 5 elements begin to show themselves as you advance through techs and eras reaching the industrial age and becoming something you could see as more of a kingdom country or empire. I would like to temper expectations though as I haven't yet fully explored this game and its current final age, while I have read about mentions of things like electricity and have even began making industrial steel factories, in its current early access state I don't believe the industrial era to be that extensive. I would certainly recommend this game to fans of colony builders who also enjoyed aspects of Civilization 5 such as social policies and era progression, or aspects of Kingdoms and Castles in which you would be able expand onto other island or continents and would be able to set up trade distribution between your colony and main kingdom. I don't believe I encountered many negative points worth mentioning or remembering, that is to say the only critique I would have is dealing with the storage areas filtering and how at a certain point the storage areas can be filled so fast that I could't be asked to go through every storage area, warehouse and/or market to try and manage where resources were so people could efficiently reach things like food or medicine. But it could be I was just utilizing "Logistics Offices" and "Hauling Services" properly. All of this is to say even in its early access form Kingdoms Reborn show exceptional potential and promise and I would happily recommend.

This game has just been getting better and better as time progresses. If you're a fan of Banished, you will love this game. Plus, unlike Banished, this game has a fully functioning and well built multiplayer mode.
