The truly ultimate "WARRIORS OROCHI 3" is now available on Steam!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1879330/

About the Game

Experience the thrill of one versus thousands in an all new open world setting with DYNASTY WARRIORS 9, the latest installment in the series!

・A New Open World Warriors Game

For the first time in the series, the expansive land of China is shown on a single map with the introduction of an open world format for diverse progression through the game. The 'one vs. thousands' exhilarating action of the Warriors series and the beloved characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tale are carried over, but the freedom through an open world stage provides a brand new Warriors experience.

Key Missions unfold and progress the story of the player character, and are supplemented by numerous missions from various regions such as Regular Missions that affect the Key Missions and requests from other characters. The situation will be ever changing depending on what missions are selected. In the many battles that occur on the map, players will find a variety of strategies and tactics open to them such as "attacking head on," "launching a surprise attack from an elevated position" or "infiltrating at night", for numerous ways to enjoy the expansive world of the Three Kingdoms.

The map is displayed with beautiful graphics and features many different regions of China such as snow plains, jungles and deserts which reflect the passage of time and changing climate. Key cities and checkpoints, such as Luoyang and Hulao Gate, and landmarks such as the Yellow River and Mt. Song, are replicated, allowing for deeper immersion into the game world.

・A Redefined Action System

The new State Combo System reacts and responds to the surrounding conditions, building up on the base Warriors action system. The three core elements are: "Flow Attacks" that change depending on an enemy's state; "Reactive Attacks" that optimally adapt to situations; and "Trigger Attacks" that change an enemy's state.

The addition of Interactive Action allows players to take advantage of the surrounding terrain and environment. In addition to climbing mountains and swimming across rivers, using grappling hooks to climb walls and launching fire arrows into oil barrels to induce explosions are among the new actions for broader strategic gameplay.

・The epic tales from the Three Kingdoms through the eyes of new and returning officers

Experience the Three Kingdoms story woven through a vast roster of characters. Seven new officers (Cao Xiu, Man Chong, Xun You, Cheng Pu, Xu Sheng, Zhou Cang, Xin Xianying) have been added for a total of 90 playable characters; all 83 officers from the Dynasty Warriors series return, with new costumes.

I would say this game was not a complete failure but there are some things that definetly made it bad. The open world is a good idea but its super bland and repetitive granted dynasty warriors has always been repetitive the battlefields are vastly different more diversity for the maps. Making certain characters weapons paid dlc bro what the fu##. The open world is barren not much to do or explore. I think the open world is a good start and should be improved on with historical landmarks, random encounters (challenging duels where the officer can beat your a## fairly easily better a.i), a base to build like a fort similar to the house idea but on a larger scale, i dont hate the open world and welcome it but it definetly needs heavy work done, creating a custom foot soldier as a paid dlc custom campaign id pay top dollar to do this for every kingdom, i prefer the move variations of the past. ill be honest i dont care about better graphics for dynasty warriors 10 i think the overall quality of the open world, and more variety of officers having thier unique weapons is the key. for christs sake give lu linqi her dw8 in the next game-_- and staple characters like zhang he yk the guy thats been around since the 3rd installment he keeps the claws-_-. I cannot reccommend this game in good faith with this all being said sorry koei tecmo but you pulled a bethesda/rockstar dic$ head move. Be better than that i take pride playing japanese made games because even though they have many weird fan service dlc of the female members(that i buy lol) they always deliver what they promise. ive been playing dw sw and wo since i was 8 years old when dw3 came out and bought every game i dont think you guys will fail again i believe in you and know it was just a fluke and an experiment that failed but it isnt the end keep at it and i know you will succeed just dont be scum like many american game devs are now.

This game has its issues, try the trial and see if its for you. The older games also have jank that gets forgotten about with nostalgia. I wish they would have improved it with time but they did minor fixes for complaints like the grappling hook and stopped, open world probably won't be on the table going forward because they didn't know how to do it properly in the first place then didn't even improve it much going forward with patches. I could probably complain more but positives are needed I think. The open world aspect feels a bit better for the chapters since you can see where officers would be on the map of China instead of just in a custom field. If you enjoy 'painting the map' like I do you'll end up wasting too much time taking extra bases knowing they get reset at the next story chapter because its fun taking things over and 1 vs 1000 gameplay is enough for you. Overall the game without bias is probably a 5/10 at best maybe. Me being biased I'd probably only go as high as 7/10 because I still acknowledge there's a lot of flaws but I overlook them. Definitely do the trial version to get a feel for the game first before you buy.

Tl;Dr at bottom As of right now I would not recommend this game as a whole, as it is average if not painfully mediocre. This is coming from a fan who has enjoyed every single Dynasty Warriors game since Dynasty Warriors 3. This game aspires to be an interesting one, and by all means achieves it with SOME success, but some of the many components of which it is made up drag it down in an otherwise different game. I'll make this review simple and lay it down in simple pros and cons that long term fans and newcomers can understand. Forgive me if some things are rather specific, but everything I mention is worth considering. Pros: -The music is great -Graphics are above average -The interface does its job exceptionally -Large diversity of characters to play as, but requires you to unlock them as you play the game -Combat is mostly simple but has many components what can be used to enhance it, such as items, environment, and more -Crafting in the game is balanced enough, offering some specialization to suit your tastes, to a degree -Small distractions such as owning a house offer some distractions you can use to interact with other characters if you want -Different factors can decide battles, though it has varying results Cons: -99% of the battles are so boring, easily cheesed. Win a battle designed to be 10+ minutes by ignoring the purely optional objectives and running straight to the commander and beating it in 1 minute. -AI who follow you around more often than not sit and watch -Even during important battles, the AI will be too stupid to properly navigate, preventing them from joining in like they're obviously meant to do -Traveling the world is essentially a big chore until many hours later into the game -Some enemies will just straight up despawn in front of you, forever gone -Some of the text you need to read flies by during a second, screwing you over if you needed to read them -Game has issues with rendering, even in cutscenes some things will just not fully render, such as characters in the front of the action. -The voice acting is something that is more of a distraction than it is a treat to listen to, as almost all voices you will hear in the game are less than desirable to listen to, and you'll hear them often enough, which detracts from enjoying the downtime between combat as well as what are supposed to be meaningful scenes. -The lip synch in this game is just god awful, with the only passable parts being special cutscenes. This comes a distasteful annoyance, like the voice acting. -Some of the game's animations come off as being slower than they should be, which is distracting -Game has inherent performance issues during combat -Dialogue audio cuts out during combat a lot -Enemies clip through objects more than often enough, putting them in places they shouldn't be, and becomes painful during battles in castles Overall, I'd say 100% pass on this game UNTIL they patch some of the problems later down in the road (especially the AI and other oversights). As it stands, I'm being rather fair when I say this game will be worth buying, but only after they fix some of the problems with the game and fine-tune some things. It's not a great game, but it isn't trash, either. Tl:Dr I personally cannot recommend this game, but you do you. I'm just here to inform I feel it is painfully mediocre at best, and that is being somewhat kind.

Despite the title, this is an early access game. Feels like it, perfomance issue even on high end spec. Bugs and glitch here and there, tutorial messed up button display, etc. What about the new open world feel, you ask? It's a world of nothingness, waste of time, empty space greatness. Traveling from place to place really feels like a chore if you haven't unlock the nearest fast travel point. Imagine that you must travel on horse with nothing to do on the way to the destination for about 8 minutes, then just to kill bunch of pitiful soldiers that can be done for less than a minute. FUN!!!! What this game really is, it's a beta test for DW 10.... if this doesn't go well, they can just revert it into ordinary hack and slash again. Not our money thought, that they won't revert. PS: Playtime is not equal to game quality. If you see my playtime, divide it by 2, half of it was me traveling from point to point of quest, afk, and trying out all available graphic configuration to minimize the FPS issue.

I don't think I've ever written a review before, but kind of feel compelled to with this title. Brief history for me with the Musou series: Started with DW5, own it and DW6-9 now, SW2-4, Orochi Warriors1-2. I've loved the Warriors style of games for many years now, and I don't think I've seen a more polarizing entry in the series, or at least a more conflicting one. The Warriors/Musou style of games have always been about a small focus of things, but for me personally it's always been about that 1v1000s style of being a badass and smacking down peons left and right while making your way to the end of stage boss. That style of gameplay, while emulated well enough here, also has the formula of the game feel extremely disjointed and disruptive. The truth of the matter is this: Anyone that has ever played a Warriors/Musou style game will not recognize this game to be of that group. The combat is somehow more complex and simple than it's ever been with the Trigger combos and instant kill mechanic on enemy officers/captains, and the feeling of an empty world except when you finally make it to an area with enemies is vastly apparant considering the stages in Musou games in the past were always littered with peons to either slog through or ignore completely while running through them on a horse. With all of this being said, I still think the game can be enjoyable, but dear god the QA on the PC port was poor if not virtually non-existent. Constant 30FPS at best when you're riding around by yourself, and it dips below 10 when you hit crowded groups of enemies - which will happen constantly as that is the main point of this game after all. Also, the grappling hook mechanic was a nice idea, but it honestly should have been scrapped or made into an item whose scroll you unlocked through progression in the game. Being able to cheese sieges instantly with the item makes them a complete joke, and than you just run into the fort/castle/base center, beat the enemy officer, and you've captured it immediately. I'll keep a hold of the game because I can appreciate the experiment Koei-Tecmo did with this game and believe it can still be decent in its own way, but I no longer view this game as an entry in the Dynasty Warriors franchise even though I've played less than two hours of it. I'll be waiting for PC performance patches in the meantime though, because at the moment its nearly impossible to play.

"Fixed an issue that incorrectly allowed unsupported languages to be selected by performing a specific method." You gotta be kidding. Since the language is already in the game why the F would you patch to remove it?

First of all, I am somehow the lucky one, I have NOT encounted ANY of those known bugs AT ALL, and since I am running this game on an old 980TI/16GB Ram pc right now, I used the mid graphic setting and my FPS always bounce between 45-60, maybe drop a little when musou right into a crack load of enemy(which happens on all other DWs in the past anyway), So this allow me to view this game on a much peaceful level and not as a raging ranting gamer... Game is good, but just "good" and nothing more then that (by my rating, that is around 60/100), it's fairly fun and action packed (If you actively looking for action) on a fairly big open world map, It murders time like a boss, I am around 11 hours into the game and I haven't even finished Cao Cao's story yet, you always have something to do in the game, I'll break the "things to do" down to sections... [Story Quest] This is the main quest chain you need to do to complete the cheaptor, you usually have a GOAL and some Pre-Quest that lead to the completion of the goal, by follow the quest chain it will bring out the full capability of your force and reduce enemy resistance down to ground. [Minor Mission] Those are random missions giving by residents in the city or guards at outpost, those are often simply "go there and kill that" mission, it usually rewards golds, meds and assets. On completion, those minor quests also reduce enermy's level and make them easier to deal with. [Hunting Animals] Hunting rewards player with assets and "hinting point" assets are need for crafting, and hunting points will yall you rewards from NPC in tarven, and both are leading to end game gears. [Cheasing Bandits] There are bandits roaming in the wild, they are a great way to collect golds and old coins, even golds arn't play that big part in the game anymore, but you will still cheasing after those badits for those "old coins", since those coins are what you need for acquiring blueprints of end game gears. [Fishing] So far the best way to earn golds, you can easily get a hack load of top tier assets with fishing, this will be the way to pay for your meds and arrows. [Takeover Outposts or Forts] There will be a lots of outpost along the main road, you can jump in and attack them if they are in enemy hand, they usually rewards around 3 - 4 crates once you manage to takeover the control, and those crates are the main source of income and bit of bouns assets, and outpost under your control also act as fast travel nod. There are also Forts that you can attack, once you takeover a fort they will yall 1 - 3 crates, and there will also be item merchant and blacksmith in the fort as well. [Manage Your Hideout] Hideout act as an alt-able fast travel nod, you can alt the furniture to alt the hideout's function, and since NPC army will not attack hideout(unlike outpost), you can also use your hideout to fast travel deep into enemy land. And if you installed Couch, you will be able to invite officers to visit your hideout and build ralations. [Sightseeing] There are special spots that buckets you loads of XP, you will want to visit them for a bit of xp boost. [Crafting] Well... You will need to complete quest to collect the blueprints, or buy them with old coins, or earn them by hunting reward, and once you got the blueprint you can start pumping out meds, gems, cooking and weapons that will aid you in dealing with tougher enemys. That sounds great isn't it? Will I recommend this game to you guys? FK NO!! On top of those common bugs and proformance issue that people encounters (which I avoid with pure luck). This is the only game that DEVs make players download full language packs for the game, but bars access to Chinese language packs becaues they only want PS4 players to get access to extra language support, then when they learn steam users manage to alt their registration to access extra language packs, the DEVs released a PATCH to REMOVE the language pack from the game... Language doesn't troubles me, the way how the DEVs does thing is what annoy me enough to make me vote down on this game, If you don't want players to get access to something, then DON'T include it as part of the game package!! If you already did make players download those extra files, then just acknowledge your mistake and player's right to use those file, not lamely patch-remove it! Just how am I gonna trust a company that is heavely tiping on DLCs will not use this methods in the future to remove game feture and resale them as a DLC??

I wrote this review by keeping open a text document while I played the game, writing down things that irked me as they happened. --------- Guan Yu has trouble hitting prone enemies, so you end up never wanting to do his prone-causing trigger attack. Cao Xiu's attack pattern's movement often puts him in awkward positions, causing his attacks to no longer hit the target, forcing you to manually reorient yourself to the enemy even if you were locked onto the target the whole time. The new fighting system in general is unreliable, anytime you hit either the X or Y key you can't be 100% sure what attack you'll be doing, and the Y key in particular is problematic because you use it to charge enemies at a distance, but sometimes it doesn't do that for... reasons. And sometimes you have to use X to do that if you just hit Y to do something else. When it comes to combos you can give a *suggestion* for it to do a particular one by starting it with a trigger attack, but after the initial string is finished you're more or less at the whim of whatever combo it wants to throw out there. It's especially troublesome for characters like Cao Xiu, where he has an interesting and fun string that looks a lot like actual martial arts, and it's good for really focusing on one guy in front of you, but he's also got a string that always starts with him flinging his weapon around his body, hitting everyone around him. That in itself wouldn't necessarily be a problem, I'm always for AoE attacks, but this particular attack seems to take *forever* to complete before you can continue the string, and it's often not up to you regarding which string you start doing when you hit X. While playing as him I ended up just giving him another weapon to avoid it altogether, that's how frustrating it was, I wrote off an entire weapon category and an entire character based mostly on how ineffective and unfun his combo-starter was. It didn't help that his "special" attack was also entirely useless. Why is the stable at all necessary for changing which horse you have equipped? I understand one for *buying* horses, but most characters seem to start their story in a town that *doesn't* have a stable, meaning you have to consistently go out of your way to go and equip something when you'd prefer to just be playing the game instead. Every character starts with 100 speed. There are no more "fast" characters anymore. The same line of thought that suggests everyone's speed should be the same ("We don't want some characters to feel more sluggish than others") would also be used to remove the speed stat altogether. As it is it's just fifty points you plug in and then you forget about it for the rest of the game, for every character. It's pointless. Why is the Gold Crown an equippable item? There's no reason to ever not have it equipped. It makes the game much less fun to have to wander around walking over every single thing that drops to collect it. And you have to do that, because there's a time limit on drops, so you can't just go about the rest of the fight and get it later, because it'll be gone by the time you do that. So once you have access to it, you always have the Gold Crown equipped to have drops be automatically collected. Just have it be a passive thing that always happens. Why is the Wind Fire Wheels an equippable item? Being able to cancel out of an attack by jumping is a fantastic feature that really adds depth to what you're able to do. Why is it locked behind an endgame item? You should encourage people to use this mechanic to get the most out of the combat. You should have it be a normal mechanic, accessible from the beginning, without the use of an item. I love having access to the grappling hook. That said, what's the point of the wall-jump mechanic? It drains stamina so quickly you can't use it to climb anything, and even if it didn't you still have the grappling hook to do that instead. The only time I ever wall-jump is by accident. A lot of the enemy AI seems pretty broken. Like, actually broken. I constantly come across entire squads of enemies just... standing there. Doing nothing. In a major battle. They just spawned so far off to the side that there's nobody to pull aggro on them, so they instead they stand there doing nothing, sometimes not even looking in the direction of the fight itself. Let me kill the people utilizing the siege weapons or don't have enemies on the siege weapons at all. Fishing is ridiculous. It's not even useful as a calming break between fights, because everything you catch causes a raucous roaring cheer. And the icon telling you to start reeling the fish in doesn't change at all, so you never know how close you are to pulling it in. I've gone back and forth between trying my hardest to rapidly pull in the fish versus calmly pressing the button repeatedly, and I haven't noticed a difference in the quality of the reward you're given nor the length of time it takes to actually pull the line back in. It feels so much like a last-minute thing that was just slapped on without much thought put into how it would look, feel, sound, or what purpose it would serve. Trapping is ridiculous. You set it down in a random location, and a couple missions later it's closed up, signifying something has been trapped, and you collect it. And it doesn't tell you what you got. Seriously, I dropped twenty traps, came back, picked them all up, and I have no idea what I got for it, if anything. Hunting is ridiculous. Okay, more specifically, the "hunting score" is ridiculous. You can never tell what's actually causing it to increase, and the hints for it are just vague notions of doing as few attacks as possible to increase your score. There's no scoreboard telling you you've already gotten the maximum reward possible for hunting any one particular animal, you just have to kinda guess that you're done with deer forever now. The horse-summoning AI is ridiculous. It's only barely faster than your non-sprinting speed, so you can't be sprinting, whistle for the horse, and then hop on when it catches up. And it spawns so far away that it takes a few irritating seconds for it to get around to finding you - if it ever finds you. Occasionally it'll just spawn behind a barrier, or on a wall, and get stuck. Waymarks and watchtowers are ridiculous. They don't remain found from character to character, so you have no sense of completion from doing it unless you plan on doing it for every single one and every single character - which nobody will do. And they don't even seem to retain having been found for the same character across multiple chapters, further rendering it a moot point. "You can check favorite weapons from 'weapons' under 'belongings' in the pause screen!" Except, no you can't! You can check the weapons you currently have. There's absolutely no apparent indication as to which weapon is a "favorite". Unless I'm misunderstanding, and "favorite weapon" is a specific weapon of a specific weapon type, rather than just the person's default weapon type. If it's a person's weapon type, why would you ever not have it be their default one? And if it's a specific special weapon in a weapon category, why would you ever use any other weapon at all? Even if there are stronger versions of that weapon, if it's not "favorite" and you don't get the special bonuses that entails, it's not worth using! Why is the ability to check what kind of treasure an icon on the map represents a separate menu option than the rest of the map functions? That's an actual question, I can't think of a reason for it, and I can't think of another game which had all these elements and irrationally separated them like this. Steam has a character limit, full review here: https://www.reddit.com/r/maynardftw/comments/7yc0am/dynasty_warriors_9/

Personally I actually enjoy playing this game specifically because of the fact that I've always played Dynasty Warriors games to mindlessly run around. This game allows me to do that for hours on end while being able to pick up materials and hunt. I've had fun running around and "Fast Traveling" to unexplored areas of the map. I actually spent 10 hours on the first chapter and battle Yellow Turban Rebellion playing with Cao Cao running around collecting materials, visiting new areas, and completing random missions. Now on to the true review. Note that I have only played as Cao Cao and am currently in the 4th Chapter around where you deal with Yuan Shu with Sun Ce looking to break away. This game is glitched. Plain and simple. Glitched. Go to youtube and just watch videos on the game. PC or console it is all the same. Unless you are someone that has a good laugh like me at the ridiculous glitches that can occur it will infuriate you to no end how everything can glitch out at any point. You can grapple in ways you shouldn't be able to (jumping, swimming, on horse), make it through tight spaces you shouldn't be able to, ride your horse where you shouldn't be able to, and so on. Graphics wise the game is alright. I run a ASUS GeForce® GTX 1050Ti 4GB ROG STRIX OC Edition HDMI 2.0 DP 1.4 Gaming Graphics Card and outside of random white spots on characters, my screen seemingly blinding me with white light as though an explosion occurred after Fast Travel, the sky becoming pixelated while also looking like someone carpet bombed it, and frames dropping to low numbers when too many people appear on screen I've had no major issues :^). AI. The AI in this game is awful. Animal AI. Enemy AI. Ally AI. Everything is inexplicably stupid in their movements and reactions. Outside of the enemies dodge rolling your initial attacks they are not difficult to defeat. It just takes forever to kill anything because of high health and defense. Hunting is dumbed down by simply standing out of visual range indicators of whatever animals and shooting your bow. With unlimited arrows you can miss all you want. Open World setting was rushed and lazily done. There is no debate here. I took the time to travel the entirety of the map and there were numerous areas left with not a single soul in them despite being a major city/camp/location. Very unsatisfying setting. Gameplay. I actually enjoyed trying to come up with various combos, but comparing to past titles it was so dull and lacking. It just seems like another lazily done aspect of this game. I could be mid combo and somehow the enemy recovers out of it. I can visit an opposing forces city and speak with the major characters, but if I take a trip to the close base/camp I can go attack their forces with no repercussions whatsoever. Auto-run just takes the most inefficient path and will also not work if you are in an area with no clear cut roads along with getting you stuck in walls. Perhaps the best of the gameplay are the horses. I have 0 complaints about the horses in this game as leveling them up makes them extremely useful. Comparatively leveling up your character doesn't really matter too much. By the second chapter I had fully maxed attack and could hardly see differences in how long it takes me to kill opponents unless they were around level 1-15 (I am around level 70 at the 4th chapter). I have one of the best weapons if not the best weapon for Cao Cao (which I could somehow get in the first chapter by simply collecting materials in about an hour of roaming the map) and it feels like there is no difference to my strength. Maxed 999 weapon strength and attack all for naught. If I complete missions not only does it take forever to register that I completed them, but if I leave the area it will stay incomplete until I return and wait for some time. I actually had to restart the first chapter because I somehow went to the village entrance to advance the story, was Fast Traveled to a certain spot with the soldier's prompt, Fast Traveled myself back to complete a different mission, and was then told to go back to the same village entrance to continue the story only for there to be no soldier. If you aren't careful the story will not advance forcing a restart. I've had no issue with auto-save like others although from what I have seen it just isn't working for me and I am happy about that. The sub missions don't even give you a specific order you should complete them in which can cause plot issues where you can kill someone that is key in the main mission in some sub story mission and the game will act as though they are still there allowing them to speak their lines or appear in a cutscene. Happened with Chen Gong while finishing of Lu Bu. I was also able to allow my soldiers to enter the castle, proceeded to flood the castle, steal enemy supplies after all of this, and then kill off Lu Bu. All of that in the wrong order and it didn't matter. Inconsistencies are riddled throughout the entire game. Voices. I am someone who, when given the chance, will always select Japanese voices over English voices in any game I play because I generally hate all English voice acting. The only exceptions for me would be Cowboy Bebop, Final Fantasy franchise, and the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Obviously this game has changed that for me. The voice acting is confused, confusing, and poorly set up. I have been able to put up with poor voice acting in prior games within this series because of the entertainment brought by how over the top it has been. It has always given a Bruce Lee English dub feel. This game just doesn't care. All-in-all Koei-Tecmo whatever clearly gave two flying ***** about this game. Just get it out there and we'll deal with the aftermath at our leisure. An utter disappointment for what seemed like a big step forward for the series. If it had felt like they truly cared and really tried something out of the comfort zone I'd be ok with this pile of ****. Sadly, that isn't the case. TL;DR this game is an abomination and embarrassment of the series. Glitches galore, lazy Open World setting, poor gameplay in every aspect, and equally poor voice acting direction. DO NOT BUY if you are new and looking to get into the Dynasty Warriors series or are an old fan looking to get back into it.

While this game is not as terrible as some people claim it to be, almost every aspect of it is mediocre at best. It is obviously rushed, maybe with additional 6-12 months of development it could be a better a game, but it's Koei we are talking about. They have fanatical devotion to "quantity over quality" principle, so instead of taking time to make one good game, they will make 5 identical shallow games and milk them with DLC. Back to the topic: 1)Open world, the main feature of this game (and the savior of the franchise in Koei's dreams) is the biggest flaw. While the map is pretty big, exploring it is not fun at all. Cities look mostly identical and they are relatively small. Besides the standard visiting traders and blacksmiths routine just like in any other game, there is nothing to do in them. Resources are everywhere and very easy to find and obtain. From aesthetic point of view landscapes look very bland in comparison to real China (compare some photos with screenshots). You can find bandits and animals in the wilderness doing completely nothing. That is everything I can say about exploration. Then we got super fun activities to do in a hack and slash games. Fishing (mashing button to become the richest man in China in 10 minutes), hunting (beating or shooting animals for no particular reason), housing (inviting officers to make bonds with them which are completely pointless), errand boy quests (beside being boring, they offer pitiful reward), setting traps (just getting materials from them after some time), everything we could ask for a musou game. 2)Implementation of the above feature terribly affected battles. The only reason for open world to be in DW game in my opinion is to bring massive scale battles, unfortunately this game made the exact opposite. Battles transformed into mere little skirmishes in distant places, you have to ride a lot every time from one place to another, beat some troops and 1-2 officers, repeat. This becomes tiresome pretty quickly unless you unlock fast travel points (even they don't help much). Small scale of battles and little variety between cities makes previously distinct events like Yellow Turban Rebellion, Battle of Tong Gate or Battle on Wuzhang Plains look basically identical. Instead of actual officers they put million of those defence/assault captains (they can't shut up for a second). As the result, open world ruined one of the most fun features of DW games. 3)New combat system is not bad but i can't say that I completely enjoyed it. It's more flexible than the old charge system while also making all characters playing the same regardless of weapon they use. It's oriented on beating officers to death in one combo rather than fighting multiple enemies which I can't say is good. Then we have clone movesets. They are not as bad as DW6, but playing some characters without their iconic weapons feels wrong. I personally like that they removed majority of wacky weapons but others may disagree. 4) Difficulty is terrible as usuall (for modern DW games). Instead of making enemies more aggressive, they just increase their HP and damage to abnormal levels. That's one of the main reasons why the old games were much fun in comparison to the newer ones. Bandits are the only ones who have decent aggressive behavior (seriously Koei, i'm playing this game to fight with some bandits instead of actual armies?). Also enemies like to roll (which is completely invincible) so much to the point that makes fighting them infuriating at times. I saw one of them roll 20 times in row. 5)Story. I see so much praise for it. Yes there are much more dialogues than before and many characters got enough screen time. But once again, quantity =/= quality. They have real history and Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel as their sources and yet they still continue to produce shonen anime level crap. Once again they disneyfied some tyrants while transforming some characters into grotesque parodies. Once again nobody behaves like actual human beings. Once again torrent of dialogues about benevolence/chaos/friendship. Once again Lu Bu's story and character was written by a 10 years old person. 6) Localization... They confuse Shu with Wu, Yuan Shao with Yuan Shu, they called Zhou Fang "her", they called Guan Xing (Gwan Ching in Huang Zhong's ending) older brother to Guan Ping while it's opposite, "Zhurong is attacking Zhurong", "Attack Zhurong from a distance and rescue Zhurong" and many more mistakes like that. 7)Soundtrack is surprisingly good in comparison to DW7-8 bland tracks. Unfortunately, 90% of the game you will hear only standard battle themes, because thematic tracks are playing only during final "battles" which can end very quickly. 8)Character designs are also clear improvement over DW6-8. On other hand, generic officers look ugly - bandits who look like ministers, ministers who look like warriors, old men who look like young men. 9) Optimization is pretty bad. Fortunately, since it's PC version, graphics can be tweaked to greatly enhance perfomance with a stable (relatively) framerate even on average computers like mine. With everything (almost everything) being said, I can recommend this game only to hardcore DW fans and even many of them will not like it because it is very different from the old games (not in the good way). I have been waiting for worthy successor of DW4-DW5 for years, unfortunately the game with name "Dynasty Warriors 9" says it is finally time to give up on the main series.
