  This is an amusing, chaotic dogfight game at sea. You control a plane, which you can unlock upgrades for, and try to complete objectives against loads of different types of enemies. The controls are pretty good and don't take long to get a feel for. The action is non-stop and fun. I like that your plane repairs itself when you stop firing allowing for long runs. It's a simple game that is worth the $6 I paid for it.

  Normally I wouldn't start a review with something like a disclaimer. But this is a bit of a special case, after thinking things over and reading over things I thought I'd touch upon this before the actual review At one point and even now, some people claim that this game supports nazis or that you play as them, therefore it may offend some people or some people may find the game hateful/hate inducing. While I will agree that it may make SOME people mildly uncomfortable given the very German esque aesthetic and the name (Luft being German for red and a variety of German style spellings for plane parts for example) what needs to be kept in mind is that this is nothing more than a game, and it is also set in an alternate universe. Not to mention it does not actually DEPICT or potray ACTUAL nazi symbols or anything like that Portrayal also comes with the point of contextual use of potraying something, examples of that being Wolfenstein and its use of swastika's and even the game Blazing Angels 2 had campaigns where you can be on the Allied, Soviet and Federation/German fronts. I'm not saying I support neo-nazi trash or encourage or condone nazis or any other fucked up group/party for that matter (this is coming from someone who legit has holocaust survivors in the family or people affected by it in the family) But what I am saying is that this is nothing more than a game and its not like it encourages or depicts anything nazi focused or related, but even if it did, its not like its making a mockery of or trivializing people affected by the nazis. In short, its a piece of entertainment and fiction, nothing else (For the record, Wolfenstein has a similar disclaimer on all it's new games for the same reason) But enough of that, onto the review Luftrausers takes the concept of a rogue-lite game such as Downwell (you complete quests, earn EXP and go for the highest score/most progress while simultaneously getting new unlocks) and puts it into a game that feels like a hybrid of 1942 (The themes and vibes and art style as well as some of the music really gives off those vibes) Time Pilot (it controls and feels a LOT like it when you are controlling your plane/aircraft) and Geometry Wars or a similar bullet hell with that style (less of a scroller bullet hell and more like an arena bullet hell) and you get Luftrausers in a nutshell regarding gameplay and design. What makes this a nice overall package is the theme isn't used as often as it once was back in the day when it comes to applying it to arcade games or arcade style games (Aka war games that were like Operation Wolf, 1942, or Commando respectively) but it takes that nostalgic and old school styles and design philosophies and gives them some modern tweaks and twists while also providing an invigorating soundtrack One moment you'll be hauling ass while narrowly dodging a flurry of missiles from enemy planes, the next you'll be blasting away at airships and blimps as you light the sky up with explosions and debris. This is all done with just a pinch of player choice and strategy. Given that your ship is able to self repair itself. However it only fixes itself when you aren't attacking (with one exception). Obviously, this means you'll need to not only avoid crashing into aircraft,boats, the water or taking damage from bullets, but juggle this all while you pick when and WHERE to fire and the game looks simple enough to play, but difficult to master, a deceptively simple game by design and appealing to the eye, but hard as fuck under the surface. Just like arcade classics or other indie gems (: The icing on the cake is the customization you get offered and missions. Completing missions in game give you EXP and level you up, doing so can get you unlocks, all of which are very unique and give you many different playstyles to choose from Everything from a laser gun that decreases handling but has GREAT range to an engine that can fire bullets behind your plane to a melee plane body that has very low health but has NO CRASH DAMAGE, and you have yourself a nicely varied and easily replayable game that gets covered in disasters and quite chaotic very quickly. While no award winner. This is a damn good example of a modern take on retro formulas and game design, and I highly recommend this as both a fun challenge and time killer

  -Was told to kill 15 enemies without taking damage. -Achieved this by flying plane into battleship and erupting in screaming skull shaped nuclear hellfire. -Was awarded with another rank for my brilliant combat tactics. 10/10

  LUFTRAUSERS is a bullet hell airplane based game, being released on PC, PS3 and Vita in early 2014. Game play is quite simple, you are in control of a airplane and you have to take on hundreds and hundreds of other enemy fighters coming at you from all angles. This game allows your plane to fly in all 360 degrees. Your main weapon will shoot from the front of your plane, you also have to take into consideration things like gravity, stalling and drifting whilst dodging all of the oncoming enemies. Initially the controls seem very hard to get a grasp of, but once you work out how the plane flies and how you are supposed to control it, it becomes almost second nature. I would say it took me at least an hour to get to grips with the controls. Graphically, the game has a very minimalist look to it. Whilst there is little detail gone into the planes and their silhouettes, you still feel like you are actually there in the skies shooting the planes down yourself. They could of quite easily made this look like a many of the other flight games on Steam, I think its the graphics and art style that most people will remember this game for. There isn't really any story or plot to follow in LUFTRAUSERS. I also didn't really want one too; it's perfectly fine for a game not to have a plot I think. After all, your character can nose dive your plane into an enemy battleship, reap the rewards from it and move onto the next character without batting an eyelid. The game also has a kind of rogue-like feel to it, after each level, you are able to customize your plane with different weapons and armor, and you keep all of the updates even after you die, along with any levels and points you have earned. Eventually you'll get more powerful and be able to simply overpower some stages purely because your plane will be kitted up so much. LUFTRAUSERS is a very hard game. I have died countless times, you just need to get used to it - there is no way around it. But if you preserver through, you'll soon be able to break through that wall you have been pounding your head on for an hour and beat the challenges that are set at the start of each level. In order for me to reach the "end", it took me just over five hours. For me it felt just about right as I think it would really start to get tedious if I had to keep playing. This is probably a game you will want to dip into now and then, and not do a full stint of it like me, to get maximum fun out of it, just play it for twenty minutes at a time. The game is also highly recommended you use a game pad too; I tried with keyboard and it was just horrendous to control. To sum up, LUFTRAUSERS is a nicely put together indie title with some interesting elements; bullet-hell fans will absolutely adore it, and this is really a good game to play if you have five or ten minutes to spare as no level will ever last longer than that. The price tag of £6,99 makes it an absolute bargain for anyone. If you found this review helpful, please consider giving it a thumbs up.   In Luftrausers, you play as the pilot of an experimental self-healing fighter plane during the second world war, the catch is, you're on the german's side. This piece makes you feel like a total badass as you tear up the sky with your hundreds of different plane combinations, each as unique as the next, and witness your foes drop like flies. But the game's no match for your eagle-like superiority, you say? You can try out the SFMT mode for a true test of ones aeronautical mettle. Luftrausers' addictive, one more try kind of gameplay spells a good handful of genuinely fun hours of playtime. For it's cheap pricetag in a sale, this game will definately have you coming back for more fast-paced action with its quirky interface, adrenaline-fueling soundtrack and glorious pixel graphics. "Luftrausers" is a made-up word. Sounds German. But it's not."

  An excellent feel of flight, maneuvering, and destruction - I felt as though I was a top pilot fighting through dozens of enemy airplanes. The visual style is perfect for this type of game. Each rauser consists of three main parts - weapon, body, and engine. There are five versions of each part which the player chooses freely in order to assemble their rauser. This translates to 125 combinations of planes. Each mission requires the player to use a particular loadout, which makes it fun to try out different combinations. Plane components are visually distinct and also affect the music which makes using each rauser unique. Some problems I encountered: -certain weapons require the player to take some time to understand the mechanics -steep learning curve (depending on user preference) -apart form mission completion and unlocking of components there is not a lot of unlockable content, but given that different components allow different missions, there should always be enough room to play a different mission if stuck Even though the game is short, I believe that the sheer quality justifies the high price tag. It is crucial to invest enough time to fully understand the game, and get a feel for it. If you manage that, it won’t be long before you love it forever. Vlambeer has been our major source of inspiration, and one of the reasons why we started making shooter games. I hope they will not mind, but because it is so hard to reach players these days I want to mention our newest game Rocking Pilot which is in some ways similar to Luftrausers.
