Train Simulator: Malmesbury Branch Route Add-On Возможности

The quaint, atmospheric picturesque single-line branch, from Somerford to the small town of Malmesbury, features authentic, heart of English countryside steam, ready for you to enjoy in this add-on for Train Simulator, courtesy of Partner Programme developer Just Trains.

Historically, Malmesbury held quite a significance to its name and earned its place within the Cotswolds thanks to being a prominent market town. Being a centre for learning, the local Abbey also drew attention in the Middle Ages. Despite this however, when the Great Western Railway plotted their famed route from London to Bristol, Malmesbury didn’t make an appearance on the network.

The GWR did plan for other railways which would link Malmesbury to the rest of the World, the first of which was the Wilts and Gloucestershire Railway which was approved in 1864. The W&GR would have run north to south, via Malmesbury, in an effort to link existing GWR routes together. The northern section of the new route was reaching Midland Railway territory, and the new line’s construction would’ve given the Midland access to the GWR network. In the end, disagreements led to the line’s early abandonment.

No, Malmesbury wouldn’t get a railway until the community itself spoke up and approached GWR. Plans were soon drawn up for a simple branch line connection from Dauntsey that would more than suffice. The Malmesbury Railway Company was formed in 1872, work was approved, and GWR fronted half of the £60,000 price tag for the 6-mile branch, that’s over £6 Million in today’s money.

By this point, the GWR was realising that their broad-gauge reign was coming to a close, so the branch to Malmesbury was built to the more popular standard gauge. Construction wasn’t easy, bad weather proved to be a challenge, and the projected final cost of the line continued to rise. The new branch opened in December of 1877, after a staggering £87,094 (£9.5 Million) spend, and regular services were put into effect by the Malmesbury Railway Company. By 1880, the GWR had absorbed the new branch into their vast network.

After decades of running branches throughout the west of England, the GWR were looking to find ways to cut down on the costs of running these small lines. It was eventually decided to shorten the Malmesbury Branch, and have it connect to the newer South Wales Main Line at Somerford, instead of continuing south to the Great Western Main Line as it did before. This move effectively halved the distance between Malmesbury and the rest of the network, meanwhile the old connection to Dauntsey was used for wagon storage.

After the Second World War, the Malmesbury Branch fell into disarray. New bus services provided better connections to the local area, and by the late 1940s, only a handful of passengers were using the line. Despite local opposition, there was little choice but to withdraw passenger services in 1951, and freight was not enough to keep the branch open forever, so it closed in November of 1962.

While lost to history, the branch line to Malmesbury left its impression on the landscape, and with a keen eye, its route – both original and shortened – can still be seen from the skies to this day. Faithfully, Partner Programme developer Just Trains have re-created this branch as it existed in 1950, a small slice in time before passenger closure, and is now ready for you to enjoy!

I got it on sale for 7 bucks, so we'll just get that out of the way. For 7 bucks, I think it is a pretty neat little route. Sure, it's not long, nor is it a double track mainline, but I find it perfect for those days I want a short, quick run that is relatively easy. The included stock is where this DLC kinda drops. The pannier tank and Grange class are outdated. 3rd party content comes in handy for this one. If you love small steam and/or diesel, this is honestly the perfect little route. For what you get, I personally don't find it worth full price, but the summer sale is a decent time to pick it up.

TL:DR : only buy when on discount Pros: nice selection of rolling stock and locos. Nice scenery. Cons: very limited scenario selection. Not much to do beyond shuttling back and forth. Biggest nit pick: very minimal route mileage. Not even enough mainline to hide trains spawning/despawning. Branch line could've been extended to Somerford, which still existed for storage purposes.

Personally after driving this route I find it has no beneficial interest to me, plus all of the locomotives that come with this can already be found in Riviera in the 50s and they are the exact same classes and names on the 4-6-0s in both DLCs Refund requested on this and I will stick with Riviera in the 50s

Is this addon worth the money: No Is this route an excellent, well made GWR branchline: Yes First some pros and cons: Pros: Excellent scenery Historical accuracy Operational value for a line of it's size Cons: Price Rolling stock My opinion of the GWR Malmesbury branch addon is very conflicted, on one hand the route's developer clearly spent a great deal of time ensuring he got things right, on the other hand, I can find routes on Railworks America three times the length with similar levels of detail. I find this route a joy to drive on, but the included rolling stock appears to be copied and pasted from the Riviera line DLC, given all this, I cannot in my right mind recommend purchasing this DLC at full price, however I also do not regret the purchase, and feel I will likely get hours of enjoyment in Free Roam. Summary: The Malmesbury Branch is a well made addon that is overpriced for the amount of content included, if on sale for 5$, purchase it, otherwise you will be disapointed from the lack of content.

You get: Castle-AI, Grange, Hall-AI, King-AI, Pannier Locos. Centenary,Colletts and MK1 Coaches. 3 Plank, 5 plank, 7 Plank , FIshbloater, Syphon G, Milk Tank, GW Standard Van, AA Guards Van Freight Wagons. European Locos and Assets are included. The five scenarios included are original and engaging. The Branch line is modelled to a good standard and has eye catching detail such as Allotment plots next to the railway. Although the branch is quite short, it is good to see some new and original locations in a genuine 'new route'. I wonder how many people will be putting this into their shopping trolleys at Christmas? :)

This route as others have stated has some pros and cons to it. Pros: - Quaint little line before the Beeching axe of 1963 - Nice little details - Very similar to the original Cons: - Recycled engines and cars from Riviera in the 50's route - Little amounts of detail between the 2 main station - When looking closely at the mainline, you can see the mainline traffic disappear due to the way the A.I. is set up - Some of the track work and also the part on the little map at the bottom of the screen shows no tunnel - The actual "Mainline" is very short with no detail past it, or at least for a short distance - the price at 11.99 is a bit too much for this. I would say 5 bucks is enough. Even though this route could deal with some improvments, it is still a nice little GWR branch for 1 engine business and it acurately depicts the real life line in the year 1950, before it was closed. I give this addon a 7/10. Basically a meh
The Malmesbury Branch
Pros * Beautiful, eye catching scenery. * Fantastic Level of detail * New steam era assets which i will definitely be using on my own work * For such a short route, its operational value is outstanding * A lot of care has been put in Cons * A very short route, would love to have seen the full line to Daunstey * Locomotives from Riviera 1950s, would have like to see the Armstrong 517 class. * Would have liked a little more of the mainline for scenario AI purposes. Overall im happy with this purchase. It proves that when just trains arent trying build Train sims biggest, crappest and ultimately rushed routes, they can create some very atmospheric and enjoyable addons.
Verdict : 7.5/10
