The Assignment is a remarkable addition to Shinji Mikami’s (dir: Resident Evil (2002), and Resident Evil 4 (2005)) new survival horror universe in The Evil Within. This game succeeds as a DLC because it rekindled my interest in the original. It fleshes out the lore and invites players to immerse themselves in a complex, though-out world. It also serves to hint at the new art direction the series will take, as the director here, John Johanas would also become the director for the canon sequel to the main title. John Johanas worked on various Visual Effects for the original title. At first, I was a bit skeptical. After all, Johanas had the tall order to follow-up on Mikami’s footsteps. But my curiosity peaked after noticing he would later become the director of The Evil Within II. The Assignment differs significantly in form and execution from the main title, in part, because of Johanas' new direction with game play and art. The Assignment is a third-person, female led survival horror. Many critics praised the original for its tense-and-confrontational combat, crafty gunplay, and creepy environments. Here is where I appreciate Johanas redirection. The horror elements here are still strong, but the craftsmanship is different. Johanas takes a page from a prominent trend in the horror genre. The gameplay in his DLCs, which bleeds out into the canon sequel, takes after popular titles like Outlast and Alien: Isolation where you cannot kill the bad guy but instead must run, hide, and outsmart them. He calls this a type of “pure horror gameplay,” but is also quick to note that too much of this, can “overwhelm the player.” <1> The DLC solves this dilemma by being just two chapters worth of 3-to-4 hours of gameplay. Epilogue: Cats I wanted to write a short bit on The Assignment’s save points. They are a breath of calming fresh air in the nightmare universe of The Evil Within. I was going to compare it to the previous iteration of this trend in the main game which used a similar space occupied by Debussy’s Claire de Lune. Maybe tie it to a good quote from an IGN reviewer who described this DLC as “more about staying in the shadows, avoiding enemies, and keeping a cool head in the face of terrifying monsters. It’s the sleek black cat to The Evil Within’s big shaggy dog <…>” <2>. Instead, I’ll leave you with some of Johanas’ words instead: The cat….The cat… well the cat made its first appearance in the DLC for The Evil Within; The Assignment and The Consequence. The cat isn’t there for the story, but more about the setting. It’s something within this world that’s tied to Kidman, and since in The Evil Within 2 it appears near a slide projector where you can communicate with Kidman about Sebastian’s past, there is definitely some meaning to that. But then again, there is also just something comforting about being in this horrific world and then coming back to some quiet where a cat is just waiting for you. From this point, I’ll leave it up to your interpretation. <3> <1> https://www.ign.com/articles/2017/08/10/the-evil-within-2-shinji-mikami-talks-his-input-on-the-sequel <2> https://www.ign.com/articles/2015/03/12/the-evil-within-the-assignment-review <3> https://www.relyonhorror.com/in-depth/evil-within-2-director-john-johanas-sheds-light-games-art-design-new-engine/a

A very good DLC. More of the same which isn't a bad thing at all. No rocket science here - if you enjoyed the main campaign then get it, otherwise avoid.

a nice addition to the main game. this DLC consists of 2 chapters where you play as Kidman and see the story from her perspective, it really adds to the story and will clear many things, but this is only the first half and the next DLC will continue Kidman's story. gameplay is very different from Sebastian, here you have to sneak past the enemies or trap them with some clever and fun traps, there are one or two sequences where you fight and thats it. it will be run and hide most of the time. Recommended for sure for both the gameplay and the story.

Disclaimer: I bought the Season Pass for 67,500 IDR (or 5,10 USD) and have a powerfull gaming rig capable of playing 1080p @60fps. I thought I should mention these as they might influanced this review. In contrast to the main game, referring to Sebastion's 15 chapters campaign, the first piece of the DLC (named "The Assignment") introduces us to the story of Jully Kidman's campaign, intertwining with Sebastion's campaign. The Assignment DLC focused on Stealth based this time, starring Jully Kidman's. Before anything else, I recommend that those who do not enjoy the story and/or the stealth mechanics in The Evil Within, to not buy the first piece of the DLC. Kidman's campaign in the DLC (at least in the first DLC) heavily lean on stealth. Now, as a fan of many types of horror genre, I surprisingly found that I really enjoyed the first DLC. The story told in Kidman's pespective is really well done. Many of the unresolved story in Sebastion's campaign are well explained in the DLC. This may anger those who bought the game for the story, as the story doesn't really told well in the main game. I feel that the writting in the DLC is better than in the main campaign too. Because of that, I felt more relate to Kidman than I do with Sebastion. Which is a huge deal for me as I don't really relate well to Sebastion's. She felt more developed compared to Sebastion's background. Talking about the stealth mechanics now, I got to say that it is really well used now. I enjoyed the tense moments I encountered with many of the "New Enemies". Stealth is integrated flawlessly, making each time I ran towards the exit running away from enemies, as I was mashing buttons, very horror inducing indeed. There are many times I thought I was a gonner when I head towards the exit and it turns out that I made it. The way the A.I. works is still kind of clunky on some stages, but it didn't bother me really much when you are too paranoid to even try to "mess" with them. Level design is improved a lot here. Where you will be teleported from place to place in Sebastion's Campaign, Kidman's Campaign is a lot more organic this time around. After finishing a stage, you get to move to another stage! I gotta say, I enjoy this level design more than the main game. All in all, The first piece of the DLC is a great experience for those who enjoyed the story and/or the stealth mechanics of The Evil Within. It has tight mechanics, great level design, cool new enemy design too. And it feels more consistent to me. Although the downside is that in the later case, where you enjoyed the shooting mechanics of the main game and/or hate the story, you will dislike this piece of DLC. And for a 67,500 IDR (or 5.10 USD) priced season pass that I got, This 2-3 hours of campaign is worth every penny (and there are 2 more DLCs to come!). Even though I bought it for that price, I do recommend paying full price at your regional equivalence. It is a great campaign to experience and in my opinion, deserve the price tag it puts up. But your mileage may vary depending on personal preference and, to some extent, PC specs (as this game is a heavy performance chugger) will impact your experience. Think of this review as a personal opinion of mine :) Do please research a lot before purchasing, as what I may honestly liked, you guys may not.

While the "stealth" elements in the main game were relatively minor - and with the exception of a few bits, not super-duper necessary, but a nice touch just the same - this time 'round it's ALL about the stealth, as you don't have any means of defending yourself for the vast majority of the DLC's duration. Add in some shamelessly Alan Wake-inspired lighting mechanics, along with one of the single scariest recurring "boss"-type creatures in the history of horror video games - one which carries on the "light" motif rather nicely, I might add - and you pretty much have this DLC by the balls. Sound pretty awesome? Well, that would be because it IS. Further add in a gimmicky-but-cute save mechanism in which you get to pet a pussy on your lap, and it's all a bit of a no-brainer really, especially if you liked the parent game (and let's face it, you're probably not even reading this review unless you DID). Already my horror "game" of the year, though there's a second part still due I believe, and I for one CANNOT FUCKING WAIT. The flecks of anticipation are staining my underpants as we speak... Verdict: 10/10. (PS Nice work from Steam censoring the word "pussy" in the above review. Pussy, as in CAT. As in PUSSY CAT. As in FELINE. Sheesh. Are we all really so childish and oversensitive that we can't deal with words like mother-fucking PUSSY, for FUCK'S SAKE?! I guess I should be grateful I can get away with the word "underpants", a word which apparently doesn't represent as great a threat to the future of civilisation as we know it as the myriad evils of the humble PUSSY! LORD A' MERCY!!)

You know, i think Bethesda is the only company, in the past few years, who actually made worthwhile dlc that is meaningfull extansions to the main experience, release months after the main games release. Skyrim, dishonored and now this great dlc. No lame gimmicks, no cheap rip offs of customer, just high quality. Thumbs up to this great DLC, who for some reason seems more scary than the main game. In it, you play Juli Kidman trying to survive in this alternative space where you are looking for Leslie. Interesting opportunity's in gameplay as you deal with ennemies, very nice graphiqs and monster design. Just get the pass.

First of all -- I loved original game. But with DLC I was totally dissapointed. Gameplay is awful, its like stealth but there is no any variations given. Path to the end is only one, you must figure it out. Hit or miss. Overall product quality feels very cheap shallow uninspired and bland. They reused alot of original assets. But as I was saying the main problem here is gameplay, its terrible. Despite it very short, I quit it half the way. Dont buy it.

Scary as hell - and a lot more than the main game. However, it is so scary due to the fact that you got shit to defend yourself with. Which is good in this case, otherwise it'd be just a stroll in the park. You take the roll of the chick in Evil Within who is not so innocent as it seems. Interesting insight on the main game too, so yes get it.

The Assigment is a story DLC released in 2015 for all the platforms, also many people consider it even better than main game. Plot takes place at the same time as The Evil Within but from perspective of Juli Kidman who was part of main roster from base campaign, in result it fills many plotholes and that is actually great. Events of The Assigment are continoued in The Consequence if you have not known. This one can be beaten in 3-5 hours but is eorth playing again just for the REAL horror climate. Kidman mostly do not have a gun, so gameplay became more stealthy, especially that she possess only the flashlight and is mych less endurable than Sebastian. There are also new types of enemies that kills you in one hit such as Shade, this one will chase you for long time. Logical puzzles are much more frequent now, thinking about your next move or finding anwsers for story nuances really gives a charm for both story and progression. There are some collectibles to find and they are very different from normal ones, more practical: unlockable tracks, letters and audio files. My advice, wait for discount and play as fast as you can. Great atmosphere will not dissapoint you, 9/10.
