You can ignore "Mixed" reviews status. Most of the issues have already been resolved. New story, bunch of new challenging monsters, new weapon moves, new weapons and armors, what else could you ask for? Must have for everyone who enjoyed MHW.

Most of the negative reviews are about old issues that have been fixed, so you can probably ignore most of the ones that are from early 2020. While the game still doesn't have the best optimization, even my very low spec computer can run this game at a playable level. If you enjoyed the base game, this is definitely a must purchase. It adds a huge amount of new monsters and quests, over doubling the amount of content to play. The clutch claw is the newest tool that players have access to, and while it might not be the best part of the DLC, it is certainly is still fun to use. The new moves allow you for more variety in how you can play your weapon, without changing any of the fundamentals. Master rank is also where the true endgame begins, where you can really start to get a lot of customization options. The armor designs also continue to be beautiful, and with the help of layered armor in master rank you can even work on customizing how you look. The minor things also make a huge impact on the overall experience, such as the personal room you can decorate. Again, if you enjoyed World, Iceborne is a must buy, as it adds so much content to the already great base game.
What You Get:
-2 new areas: a snowy, trundra-like locale called the Hoarfrost Reach + a post-story area called the Guiding Lands. -1 new move/mechanic per weapon, often slinger related. Greatsword gets the ability to speed up the process of getting to a TCS by firing a burst of slinger ammo, IG can give their bug slinger ammo to power it up, etc. -1 new story, just as bad as World’s base story. -35 new large monsters; 19 are subspecies/variants of either basegame monsters or monsters added in MHW:IB, 16 are completely new. -15 new endemic life (do note that 7 are variations on one creature, though) -3 new fish -1 new house, with enhanced decoration and pet placement options -Four slot decorations that can combine two skills or double down to hold two skill points from one skill -New weapons and armor -The Clutch Claw (it gets its own section)
Improvements to the basegame:
-New and improved endgame: instead of farming threat level three tempered monsters for individual weapon augment materials and decorations, your endgame time is split three ways. First, there are the Guiding Lands, a new area available for expeditions where monsters drop unique materials needed for the updated augmentation and layered weapon/armor systems. There are five regions in the area, each modeled after one of the game’s other maps, and spawns specific monsters from those maps. Fighting and tracking monsters in each region levels the region up, getting stronger monsters to spawn. Then, as before, there is the threat level 3 tempered monster investigations for decoration farming. Finally, there are a suite of monsters which function as endgame bosses and which are more challenging than even threat level 3 tempered monsters. Their equipment is the best in the game, and they are also a very reasonable source of good decos. -Vastly improved weapon customization through Safi’jiva weapons: Safi’jiva is a multiplayer-focused post-story boss who drops weapons and upgrade materials for them. These weapons start out very weak for their rarity, but you can upgrade their stats. You choose which stats you enhance and focus on; sharpness, damage, affinity…it’s up to you. -Mantle upgrades: You can now upgrade your mantles to have decoration slots. -The Steamworks: A new machine has been added that will produce basic hunting resources (tranq bombs, mega/max/ancient potions, mega barrel bombs, etc) essentially for free, massively cutting down on the farm micromanagement side of the game. It is an excellent QOL update.
Points of Contention:
The Clutch Claw: The Clutch Claw is a new ability added in MHW:IB for all weapons. It is a new attack that can be aimed with your weapon either drawn or sheathed. Using it shoots out a grappling hook with medium range; when it hits a part of a monster, it rapidly pulls you through the air and latches you onto the point you grabbed. Once attached to a part of a monster, you can use an attack to soften that part, raising its hitzone value and increasing the affinity gained from Weakness Exploit. Alternatively, one can (if attached to the head) use slinger ammo to launch the monster into an obstacle. This deals a substantial amount of damage, partbreak damage to its head and any softened part, and topples the monster. Doing this almost invariably causes the monster to enrage. The Clutch Claw has both good and bad aspects. It gives players more agency, lets them reach and damage higher parts, and can be used as an additional option for avoiding damage. On the bad side, it’s a very janky mechanic. The Clutch Claw itself has a very wide hitbox and significant travel time, which combined with how the game determines which parts of a monster are one clutch zone makes it very easy to grapple to the wrong part. Additionally, many people find the new necessity of constantly softening body parts to achieve optimal damage frustrating. Finally, the ability to knock monsters over by slamming them into walls is both somewhat overpowered and breaks the flow of combat; if you’re playing optimally, monsters are enraged for like 90% of the fight. I think it’s ultimately not a dealbreaker; the mechanic’s been significantly improved since launch and shouldn’t be too much of a nuisance anymore. Alatreon: You may have heard about some review bombing that happened when Alatreon was added to the expansion. To make a long story short, Alatreon was given a new mechanic requiring the use of elemental weapons. It isn’t very well implemented, and it can be very frustrating (especially in multiplayer; never ever EVER try to SOS Alatreon), but the blowback was rather out of proportion. The mechanic can be brute forced through or rendered at least palatable with enough grinding, and overall Alatreon is one of the best fights in the entire expansion. Don’t let the hate worry you; you don’t even have to fight him if you don’t want to because most of his gear was made irrelevant by Fatalis’s existence anyways.
General Thoughts:
Meta Problems: The meta is rather limited. Several sets, namely Fatalis and AT Velkhana, make virtually everything else irrelevant by virtue of being so much better. The Guiding Lands Grind: Somebody saw the great reception MHW got when it streamlined item gathering and said, “hey, what if we did like the exact opposite?” Now, weapon augmentation and layered armor is tied to collecting from bonepiles and ores in the Guiding Lands; unless you cheat in the items, expect to spend literal hours of your life running around hitting rocks with a pickaxe to get all the materials you need. The Deco Grind: It’s less shit than it was in base World, but only because there’s a wider variety of quests that give decent amounts of the best decos. It’s still an ungodly long slog to try and get decos (and sometimes multiple decos, with how many slots the armors have now) with like 0.22% drop chances; again, be prepared to go hundreds of hours without being able to complete your build unless you cheat the decos in. Monster Quality & Difficulty: Iceborne is an entirely Master Rank expansion, which is the equivalent difficulty of the old G rank. Monsters are faster, more aggressive, and hit harder than they did in High Rank; in endgame content, it is commonplace to get two or even oneshot in appropriate gear. Additionally, monsters have more complex movesets on the whole, and in the post-story content, an effort was clearly made to massively ramp up the difficulty of the endgame bosses in a fair way. The four big endgame fights (Arch Tempered Velkhana and Namielle, along with Fatalis and Alatreon) are the most difficult content seen in either the basegame or expansion, and rival even such hair-pulling nightmares as the old Deviant monsters in how brutal their fights are. If the basegame felt too easy and too simple, Iceborne is what you are looking for.
Conclusion & TLDR:
Iceborne has some issues, but it fixes base World’s lackluster endgame, improves its monster count to reasonable levels by more than doubling the roster, introduces QOL features and new mechanics, and has given us some of the best fights in the entire franchise. I strongly recommend MHW:IB to anyone who enjoyed the basegame, and especially to those seeking a greater challenge than was provided there.
Final Note:
Not really part of the review, but just as a word of advice for those who end up getting Iceborne: please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, do NOT go in with a four man group against any of the four big endgame bosses (AT Velk, AT Nami, Fatalis, Alatreon). It makes them MASSIVELY harder because of more random AI and many more successful dodges having to be performed on the same faint limit. If you must get help for them, go in with one other player, and leave your cats at home.

Almost all of the negative reviews for this DLC are about bugs and issues that have since been fixed. So - if that's your main concern with this DLC then don't worry. Good - Lots of cool new monsters to tango with and lots of new versions of old monsters, some cool throwback ones from previous title entries too. New map is cool, and in general feels like a refreshing change of pace but there are some issues. Bad - Grind. If you do not like to grind like hell this game just is not good for you, it takes alot of time and effort to progress with more powerful gear. Its not easy, but it is very rewarding. I personally love grinding so its not really an issue for me. A lot of the revised versions of the monsters from high rank in base game are essentially the same with a new look, one or two new mechanics and most importantly a massively inflated heath pool, which is a bit annoying but I was not in the slightest expecting them to change them completely. lol, nightshade paomulu make u go zzzzzz.

dont let the mixed rating and the negative reviews scare you away, iceborne is in every way better than base game and you are missing out. almost every negative review is from when iceborne first launched and there were alot of issues on pc, but these have been fixed for almost over a year, so if you have an okay computer theres nothing to worry about. with that out of the way- iceborne adds every monster that you wish was in base game, layered weapons, multiple new mechanics, new moves for almost every weapon and more. there really arent any reasons not to get this if you enjoyed base game. and even if you didnt all that much, which was the case for me, i can almost promise you that you will enjoy iceborne. this kinda sounds like an ad, and it basically is, because if you just play base and not iceborne you absolutely are missing out and i dont want you to. so summed up; if you play base, get iceborne. i can guarantee that youre missing out. (side note: ive seen some both old and new negative reviews criticizing the clutchclaw, saying that it makes hunts feel more "scripted". this is because you can use the clutchclaw to send monsters flying into walls making them fall over. and while i do agree that this can make hunts feel less dynamic, if you dislike that feeling just dont do it. the game does not force you to, neither directly nor indirectly. its obviously going to make the game easier but if it makes it way too easy you can just refrain from doing it, its that simple. dont let that ruin an otherwise great time. this is however just my personal opinion so do take that into account.)

Really damn good, ignore the ancient reviews about performance as it runs quite well now.

Rise/Sunbreak vs MHW+IB, I would deffo go with MHWIB. The latter has its own flavor, but if anyone wants to truly experience an (almost) fully-fledged MH game, this would be it, MHW+IB. For the casual gamer, you would find a great game to play along with friends, and for the seasoned veteran, a new challenge. Go get the game. Now's as good a time as any.
