Regardless of the final product on PC, I’m happy Deus Ex: The Fall found it’s way onto Steam in the first place; there are so many tie-in games released in the late 2000s/early 2010s from series such as Mass Effect and Dead Space that are just lost to time, as support for mobile operating systems is incredibly short. The Fall is a side-story taking place during Human Revolution, and also serves as a sequel to the novel Icarus Effect, which I recently finished reading. I had no idea that this game featured the same characters, and as a result, I was kind of excited, as I wanted to see some kind of conclusion to the story of Anna Kelso and Ben Saxon. But despite going into this game with extremely low expectations, the first hour left a really sour taste in my mouth. The opening two levels reenact two sections from the book; albeit with less action and hilariously awful voice acting and dialogue from enemies. While the Icarus Effect novel is pretty standard fare as far as video game tie-in novels go, there was enough to setup some kind of excitement during these chapters, which the game fails to do. On top of that, it becomes quickly apparent that this port was developed with a minimum amount of effort. The UI is hardly changed from the mobile version, buttons are unresponsive, there is only one save slot, and even though microtransactions are disabled, the equipment/weapons shop is a depressing reminder of the bullshit design found in mobile gaming. But you know what? Damn if the game doesn’t open up after you get past the dreadful prologue missions. Sure, graphically it’s not the prettiest thing, but the developers did a fantastic job of scaling a game like Deus Ex: Human Revolution into a mobile format, (especially impressive given how much weaker mobile devices were in 2013). After an hour or so of running around Panama City, I forgot I was playing what was once a mobile game. There are many hidden places to explore, alternate paths to take, codex entries to read, and combat encounters that can be approached with proper stealth or with a myriad of weapons. As I was playing, I realized I slowly got sucked into the game as I did with Human Revolution. I tried hacking everything I could, interacted with NPCs and reloaded some of my saves to see different outcomes of some sidequests. The main story itself is pretty good, taking place during a global shortage of Neuropozyne; the drug that all augmented people need to take in order to function. A competing drug enters the market and trouble ensues. The worst part is that the game ends shortly after an unexpected twist (which is a pretty good one too, especially for players who read the Icarus Effect novel). There was more content planned (as was discovered in the game files) but no sequel has ever come to fruition. It’s sad, and another example of the poor mismanagement the franchise has had since it’s reintroduction. As long as you keep in mind that this was a mobile game released in 2013, and and not a full Deus Ex experience, it’s not bad at all. Of course, I would have preferred if this was a proper standalone experience, developed for PC and consoles, but it is what it is. And despite my negative feelings towards the voice acting (and horrid character model), I wish that Anna had a bigger role to play; as one of the main characters in Icarus Effect, it sucks to see her take a backseat during the game. Switching between her and Saxon would have been cool and potentially offered the chance to showcase different abilities. Taking into account the constraints of its initial target platform, as well as the downsides of this PC release, it’s a 5.6/10 for me. I do recommend it if you’re a Deus Ex fan and you want more content; just grab it on a deep discount.

Very lousy port from the mobile version. DON'T BUY IT Edit: For the people who are interested what kind of bugs or silly ideas are in the game, here are a few examples: -You can not JUMP. Remember the original Deus Ex or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which offered you a lot of pathways and a real open-world feeling? Well guess what, they decided to be assholes and changed it to a silly "Jump over object" animation, and even that is limited to some objects. -You have access to a credit-shop at ANYTIME in the game, not matter what happens. Need some ammo? Sure, you can buy it straight away. Remember the times in Deus Ex when you needed to find medkits to heal your 25/250 HP Torso? Don't worry! Now you simply can buy "Painkillers" at anytime, which obviously makes the entire game way too easy. -AI in the game is incredibly inpredictable. Sometimes when you are 1 meter in front of their face they don't see you, yet when you're behind a solid object they manage to see you. And no, they don't have "radars". There are alot more of bugs or silly mistakes, but i'm too lazy to name them all. TL;DR: It's a shitty port-over from the original IOS version. Save your 10 euros/dollars and buy the original Deus Ex or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. If you own both games, buy Dishonored, which is basically Deus Ex, but with swords and magic.

IF you LOVED Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you will be very offended by this prequel to it!!!... I found out after buying it that it was intended to play ON-THE-GO for your tablet, then they brought it over to PC to rip you off money and time. Seriously, not worth your time, unless it's a clearance price of .99 cents... I do not recommend this game, although I did play it all the way through. The game is just --- OKAY! And misses all of the great flavor of the game prior (Deus Ex: HR).

It's a port of mobile game so speaking of technical aspects would be kinda shortsighted but I§m gonna do it anyway. - graphics is passable for year when it was released I guess - sound is mostly ok with occasional bugs - music is fine - UI is ... well it's mobile and so is combat controls - crashed couple of times during those 9 and something hours But the above does not affect my opinion on this game. I can't recommend it purely because of the story and characters, story is pretty uninteresting, insignificant and above all unfinished (maybe it was meant as episodic release) but ending with "to be continued" is not a good idea. Characters are pretty generic including the main protagonist and I get that this a spin-off happening in Panama during begining of Human Revolution but the set up of characters is just too short to care about them. To be fair gameplay is ok, it's a short game that imitates HR game mechanics and it's biggest problem is that nobody asked for it ... and it doesn't expand Deus Ex lore in any way.

This is if not one of the worst games I have ever played. Keep in mind this game came after DX:HR. It is a lazy port of a mobile game, and offers at most 3 hours of actual story. Keep in mind this was three hours of exploring just about everything there as to explore. Then the game just ends. It literally ends with a to be continued. The insane thing about this game is it literally adds nothing of value to the DX series. So if yous skip it you are literally missing nothing. I have no idea what happened with this game nor do I care, it is shameful that this product was sold for any price other than free.

This is a recommend if: A) You are a big fan of the franchise and its story B) You understand that this is a port of a mobile game, and what that entails C) You wait for a Steam sale If you can grab this for $5 or less, this game is a fun little extra foray into the Deus Ex universe. Not nearly up to par with the rest of the series, but it contains enough of the semi-open stealth action gameplay from Human Revolution that its worth a go if you're itching for a bit more content. Personally, I'm enjoying it for what it is.

Interesting story. The game itself feels very low budget and is short, which is not bad thing in this case. It promises that story will continue, which is true as it is first story if you play chronologically. I played on Linux using default Proton. Everything worked great. Alt+Tab paused the game in the background.
