“Glory to you and your house!” ~Gowron
There are names that make history. Dune II, Command & Conquer, WarCraft, Total Annihilation, Age of Empires... Just admit it – even if you didn't play those games, you at least heard about them. At the same time, though, there are games that, while being pretty solid, never got enough spotlight. Seriously, who remembers games like Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard, Lords of EverQuest, Armies of Exigo, Nemesis of the Roman Empire, Ancient Wars: Sparta and many others? To be fair, those were all clones. While companies like Westwood, BLIZZARD, Cavedog and Ensemble used to create something unique, something we didn't see before, the others just took their games and copied them. But still, very often there was something in those games. Something to make them special. Take Dragonshard for example. Liquid Entertainment took WarCraft and added some sort of D&D element. With classes, dungeons and other “Where're the Cheetos?!” stuff. Now, Rising Kingdoms? It's one of such games. First of all, a little bit of history. Rising Kingdoms was made by the Bulgarian company Haemimont Games, creators of Tzar: The Burden of the Crown and Celtic Kings series. Tzar aside (feel free to check out my review if you want to learn about that AoE clone), when it's about Rising Kingdoms, it's pretty important to keep Celtic Kings in mind. Just because of how similar Rising Kingdoms looks. Seriously, visually? It's almost identical. Especially when we're talking about unit design. Also, some gameplay mechanics were copied from Celtic Kings as is. Like Teuton nomads from Celtic Kings, units in Rising Kingdoms can hide in their structures. And yes, you'll be able to capture those by killing everybody who hides inside too. Don't expect Rising Kingdoms to be just a Celtic Kings variant, though. While Celtic Kings was all about capturing buildings, Rising Kingdoms is pretty much our typical WarCraft clone, in which we're supposed to build and upgrade structures, research better weapons and armor, and so on. Hero units from WarCraft III that can pick up and equip items included. Talking about WarCraft, by the way. Even though quite a lot of units were copied from Celtic Kings almost as is, it's also hard not to notice just how many things were copied from BLIZZARD's games. Especially when it's about buildings and heroes. For example, Vigor, the main character during humans campaign, looks exactly like ol' man Arthas. The same thing happened with the factions. In this game we have three – humans, foresters and darklings. And while only humans copied WarCraft as is, all of them use the mechanics from both WarCraft and StarCraft one way or another. In other words, factions here do feel interesting and there are some fresh things about them, but... yeah. You've got it. Rising Kingdoms is a clone and that's pretty much it. Now, execute Order Sixty-Six. Wait... that's just something from a little world domination project I'm currently working on. Forget about what you just heard. Anyhow, we've got three different factions and three campaigns with the connected story (exactly like in StarCraft, except obviously, the storyline here is very meh and is hard to care about). Every campaign comes with the ten missions, which makes this game to include 30 single player missions. Which isn't bad at all. Sounds pretty boring, though, right? Like I said at the beginning of my review, though, Rising Kingdoms is one of those clones that come with a pretty interesting touch. See, even though there are only two basic resources in this game (gold and gems, which are done somewhat in Celtic Kings way, which means that you won't need to capture the mines and cut trees), there's also... glory (* doing Gowron's eyes thing *). Even though you'll still need to build houses to increase population limit, exactly like it was in WarCraft, building houses will require glory. And to get glory, you'll need to participate in battles and conquer colonies (hello, Celtic Kings). Moreover, you'll need glory to give your champions the new skills and you can only have seven glory coins at the same time. Which means... a lot of planning. It sounds simple and in a way it is, but when you'll begin to actually play this game, you'll see that... glory is a pretty tricky thing. A thing that makes everything... a little bit too complicated, really. Seriously, if you'll approach this game while expecting it to be like WarCraft, there's a very big chance you'll find it a bit too... weird, annoying and... surprisingly hard. Even on low difficulty settings. That's exactly how I felt when I played the original DVD version back in 2005. One little touch changed the entire thing. The entire way you're supposed to play the game. And it took me some time to actually get into it. Now, while re-playing this game in Steam? I must say that I changed my opinion. Giving this game a chance and actually learning about how it's supposed to be played? It turned out to be a pretty good idea. No wonder it ended up getting a small, yet dedicated community. Which is still there. So... what's with thumb down, you may ask? Well... Let's... just say that Haemimont Games are far from being the most skillful guys out there. And naturally, this game is a technical disaster. Even though this version comes with the latest official update (1.20) pre-installed, it's still buggy as heck. Mostly when we're talking about single player campaigns, but still. Like Tzar, Rising Kingdoms come with tons of scripted scenes and man, those are half-broken. Not the worst thing about this game, though. I mean, this game? It can corrupt your saves with no reason whatsoever. In my case, my savegame got corrupted right before the final mission of the final campaign. That's just it – I click “continue campaign” and the game just freezes. Why? Because Haemimont Games. That's why. Sure, there's a pretty cool fan-made patch available, but since it's mostly about the balance (which was pretty bad in the mint version), skirmishes and multiplayer, let's... just say that it's pretty hard to enjoy the campaigns here. Talking about multiplayer, by the way. The original version was supposed to be played through GameSpy. And, as we all know, Glu Mobile, who bought GameSpy from IGN back in 2012, shut all the servers down ages ago. Those who cared about their games and wanted people to keep enjoying them (like Creative Assembly, for example) released updates for their products to let them work within Steam environment, without any need for GameSpy. Now, what did Haemimont Games do? Well, let's just say that the guys don't really care about their products (lazy re-release of Tzar is a nice proof of that). Naturally, re-release of Rising Kingdoms follows the same formula and the only way to play this game online is through Hamachi. Hence the thumb down. Rising Kingdoms is an interesting take on WarCraft. Pretty tricky one, but still, pretty interesting. But at the same time, it's still just a clone, it's buggy as heck, it's unbalanced and nobody even cared to fix multiplayer. RTS geeks may still want to check this game out for history purposes, but if we'll consider this release as a proper product? It's a “no” from me. Dixi.

Soundtrack is marvelous. I wish it was less bugged and with a couple quality-of-life additions to controls and window size.. There are patches already doing it, but you have to find it and do some trickery. Otherwise great nostalgic game

Verry good game i remember playing it a long time ago i was pretty young back then and did not know how to play but damn when i tried it out now it was trully an amazing fun to play strategy game . Also the nostalgia got me i hope the devs see that this game has more potential and try to overhaul it or something . A 1920 x1080 and HD support would be great as a starting point . Thanks for the endless fun hours in the past and the endless fun hours that are yet to come in this game !

After a long time, being buried and almost forgotten by everyone. People who still remember it couldn't get the game anywhere. It Finally saw the light again, is on Steam!! Regardless the low resolution and it's age, it's a very beautiful 2D strategic game with a fun gameplay and I recommend it!

Rising Kingdoms is a forgotten and underrated 2D classic. Game is quite old and works by me only on my Windows 7. Rising Kingdoms did make a stand for 2D RTS in year 2005, while it had good game mechanics and nice story, the graphics technology was way ahead. It did anyway age very well. While it look like Warcraft 2, with colelct gold and gems, The main design plot is was about to collect by fights a special coin resource to hire heroes and extend your unit limit. Also you could conquer outposts that did give you different benefits, like activate special abilities or special units to hire. The Outpots were this factions: Trolls * Troll Pot of Gold : Provides additional gold once in a while. * Earthshaker : Calls the legendary Troll boulder-thrower. * Troll Cannon : Shoots small Trolls at enemy buildings and armies. Shades * Ancient Executioner : Calls the legendary invisible Shade slayer. * Soul Collector : Calls the legendary necromancer that commands the dead. * Immortality : Allows your Champions to cheat death. Elves * Spirit of Creation : Calls a legendary spirit that heals your warriors. * Spring of Life : Recruits Elven warriors that do not require population. * Magic Market : Allows you to buy items for your Champions. Dragons * Dragon Eye : Reveals the entire map for 60 seconds. * Dragon Portal : Teleports your units to a friendly settlement. * Dragon Fury : Sends three Red Dragons to scorch an area. Nomads * Plunder : Sends a Nomad raiding party to attack an area. (Sends the current Nations defence) * Bazaar : Provides gems over time and additional glory. * Restoration : Rebuilds a destroyed colony from the ashes.
