I liked the first game and then this sequel was good too. This part of the game has the Gravity Gun, how can you say no to a gravity gun?

I bought this in 2005 (at the full price then) being a huge fan of Doom but never had a computer to run it on at the time. I don't know what happened to the copy in the end. I never got around to playing this since. Now, I finally get to play Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil after all these years - and I hugely enjoyed it! I'd heard it wasn't really that impressive over the years, but I thought it was great! Very atmospheric, with good background music. All new areas, which did feel like a bit of a retcon, but you do get to visit some recognisable areas a few times! Such as the old office in Administration that the Pink Demon crashed into. The window is still smashed and the door still buckled. As for the new enemies, I'd heard of them all but this is the first time I got to play against them. They are so challenging! The first time I saw the cutscene for the Vulgar I went "Aaaagh it's the creature from Species!" They are difficult and extremely vicious, and when you see multiples of them, you'd better get the artifact out quick otherwise they'll quickly tear through your whole health. As for the bruiser with the tv screen face, I'd seen the pictures, but wow what a scary massive creature it is in game, like a cross between a Hell Knight and a Mancubus, and faster and much more aggressive. Very frightening to see the huge beast teleport in. It's like "Oh gosh what IS that thing? :o" The old enemies from the main game all make a welcome appearance and it's good to see them back. They are generally used much more sparingly. Once the revenants start appearing though, they really start appearing, with often more and more teleporting in and many times in pairs or more. Wraiths appear a few times; Maggots in the waste tunnels; those awful babies just a few times, much more sparingly and easily taken care of with the grabber, so much less annoying. Trites appear a few times, and can now jump and explode so no hiding up on furniture this time. I'm glad to see ticks make a few more appearances this time after just ONE encounter in the base game. There are even a few commandos, both types. But this time there is no chainsaw to take care of them. The first appearance of the Hell Knight had me cowering and made me squeak like a mouse. I'd heard the game is very easy because of the artifact and the grabber, but it was actually VERY challenging, and a sizeable difficulty increase over the base game. Maybe once you get the hang of the new weapons it all clicks but they are very much offset by the increased difficulty, such as fighting dual revenants at the same time, and more than once fighting FIVE in a row. The double barrelled shotgun is fantastic. I think it was sergeant Kelly's. You can even take down a revenant in one solid blast if aimed well. The grabber takes real practice to master. To be honest I didn't think I would enjoy it, only seeming to be here because of Half Life, and I wasn't keen on having to learn the mechanics. But to my pleasant surprise the grabber is satisfying and fun to use. By the way, don't make the mistake I did. On the 3rd boss, the electricity invulnerability Hunter, you don't need to spend the entire showdown catching all his shots with the grabber to fire back at him, and to destroy the chambers. You can just use regular weapons to do this! Yeah, I didn't know that, and did it all the hard way! He is the invulnerability Hunter because you gain that ability by defeating him. That does not mean he is invulnerable during the fight (only when he's charging himself in the centre of the room). The aiming reticule on the HUD turning red on impact denotes the enemy is being harmed. All in all, a very enjoyable old school expansion, with a difficulty spike over the base game similar to Doom Eternal The Ancient Gods (sort of). Maybe once I get the hang of the new weapons it'll become easy. But yes, recommended!

Even better than the original DOOM 3 in my opinion. This expansion makes DOOM 3 shine even more with its better lighting, balanced new weapons, superior level design and MUCH heavier emphasis on combat that tests your skills.

I played this expansion pack when I was 15, I must have been very impressionable and easily pleased back then. This expansion pack is horrendously boring by today's standards. It feels like single Doom level stretched out to an entire expansion that is just going through the motions to get you to the ending. There isn't much thought put into the campaign's story. You're a marine at the dig site that lets a demon loose and you need to fight your way out. From there the game becomes a fetch quest to get battery cells to power areas and lifts to get to the next level. You will do this over and over again through endless tight corridors, where demons continuously spawn in front and behind you, every so often enough the game will introduce a new demon out of nowhere. In one level, the Mancubus and Revenant make a cameo - but it just feels like the expansion is ticking a checklist of enemies. This works in tandem with the weapon loadout - you are drip fed a new weapon every 10 or so minutes until you have every Doom weapon at your arsenal. It makes for a very rushed experience. Speaking of weapons, you are given a super shotgun, which is probably the only redeeming feature of this expansion - it packs a punch as it makes you feel like a total badass when it obliterates your enemy in a single shot. You are also given a bargain bin version of the "gravity gun" ala Half Life 2. In this game, this weapon feels incredibly cumbersome to use - it blocks your line of sight when you pick up objects or enemy fireballs, and usually when you fling them back at your enemy they never actually hit them. The animations and look of the marine are also quite poor overall. In his cutscenes, it looks like they left out frames of his animation. His face also looks really confused most of the time, he has this weird deer in the headlights look. There are also some really poorly designed platform sections that are tedious and frustrating that feel like they were put in to pad out some gameplay - it just doesnt work. I know I'm being harsh on a 15 + year old title and that this is an expansion, but I didn't have the internet back then. I look at what Valve was doing with Half Life episode 1 and 2 and this just doesn't hold a candle to it by comparison. If you loved Doom 3 you might find this a really subpar experience and just a flat out waste of time. Personally, I would not bother.

    Expansion Review

I apparently had a very low expectation for this DLC as a lot of people seem to hate it or told me that its awful without claryfing why that is the case. Altough i do have some issues with the DLC i generally tought it was alright. Content A new expansion with a full storyline including a new artifact weapon and two new weapons, the double barrel shotgun and the grabber, something you can grab objects with and with correct timing grab enemy projectiles and fire them back. Gameplay While mostly the gameplay is still the same, there are a few changes. Some good and some bad. My biggest gripe with the base game was that the spread of the base shotgun was rather unaccountable before. Sometimes you could one-shot upclose imps and so on, sometimes it didnt work. With the new double barrel shotgun this problem is kinda gone. The new grabber is a tool that allows for some objects replacements, altough clunky, and throwing back projecticles from enemies altough this is rather hard to do as the projecticle will be held directly infront of you making aiming it difficult as you cannot see anything. Good idea but badly executed as the mechanic to replace items i only once used for a single secret and once or twice for clearing up the main path. I mostly used it to throw barrels to save some ammo. The new artifact gives the player a slow motion which is quite op as you can use it three times, each time for each soul sucked out of a human corpse. Those corpses are planted everywhere, meaning in especially the later levels when you upgrade the artifact the combat is incredibly easy. You upgrade it by defeating some bosses, which arent bad, i really liked beating those. Probably the best part about the game. The upgrades even later make you invincible during slow motion and give you a berserk rush, making you kill anything in seconds making this way much more easier than the first game. This is a bit made even by adding new enemiy types. Most noticeable a type of imp that is smaller but attacks with bright green orbs. The problem is their lunge animation which is really bugged due to their hitbox reaching you very easily which makes dodging even in slow motion difficult. Their damage is also really insane. Otherwise the gameplay is mostly more of the same, except the last boss fight is a bit more interestening rather than firing your artifact at it for a few times. This one actually is difficult altough partially due to a really cheap aoe attack via various smaller depree pieces. Also while you play basically the same game in reverse, you never really get to be in the same places as in the first game. So they just didnt copy past the same game and put it in reverse luckily. On a side note there is also some new multiplayer content, but this one is more dead than the base one which only sometimes sees players. Story As the first game the story isnt really that good. Neither is the ending in any way conclusive or explains much. The baseline is that after the events of the first game you find an artifact after exploration and the whole UAC facilliity has been reinstated. The artifact opens a new portal to hell again and its almost the same story but even less interestening due to barely anything else going on except stop the evil forces. There arent any characters who hint that the story could involve more or that generally more is going on like in the base game. Conclusion/TL;DR Its not as bad as people make it out to be, it has a few new changes, like new weaponry, enemies and the slow motion artifact. The games biggest issue is the balancing is off due to the artifact being so strong and that the story is so weak making some people get bored as the next goal to achieve in the game might be so mundane that you might loose any interest in the game. If you want more of Doom 3 this one is great, if you werent feeling it with Doom 3 already might skip this one.
